Narrative Analysis Of "The Miami Herald"'S Coverage Of The Elian Gonzalez Saga, Kristi D. Caravella
Narrative Analysis Of "The Miami Herald"'S Coverage Of The Elian Gonzalez Saga, Kristi D. Caravella
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study examines the coverage of an event that took place mostly in Miami, Florida and was reported on by The Miami Herald for more than six months. There are several issues that are addressed in this thesis. The primary hypothesis of this analysis is that the coverage of the Elian Gonzalez custody battle as it appeared in The Miami Herald uses the same narrative techniques as those used in fictional melodrama or soap operas. John Fiske's theory of melodrama as developed from Brown (1987) and a similar model used by Fiske (1987) is used to compare the specified piece …
Nobles And Animals: Hierarchic Organization And Restoration In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House Of The Seven Gables", Gregory Douglas Cecere
Nobles And Animals: Hierarchic Organization And Restoration In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The House Of The Seven Gables", Gregory Douglas Cecere
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Since its publication, critics and readers have been unsatisfied with the conclusion of The House of the Seven Gables and have viewed it as either inconsistent or a failure. After an analysis of the language, actions, and patterns of imagery in this work, along with The Scarlet Letter and The Blithedale Romance, it had become clear that there is in fact consistency to the conclusion of this text. These patterns suggest Hawthorne's conception of an ultimate hierarchical organization that favors characters who exhibit specific attributes. This organizational pattern can be disrupted through methods of recreating hierarchical order. Such attempts create …
Pedagogy Of The Oppressor: Freirean Pedagogies In The Postmodern Classroom, Toni Perdita Francis
Pedagogy Of The Oppressor: Freirean Pedagogies In The Postmodern Classroom, Toni Perdita Francis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Since the publication of Paulo Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed , American educators have found use for his radical pedagogy that challenges traditional education practice. Freire considers current/traditional pedagogy to be "banking education"; he offers in its place a student-centered pedagogy in which both student and teacher participate in the process of learning. Freire's influence is most present in the field of composition studies where, in light of emerging postmodern theories, teachers find it necessary to alter Freire's work, but continue to value applications of his pedagogy such as dialogic classrooms, education for liberation, and problem-posing teaching. These processes and …
Numerical Simulations Of The Wave Bottom Boundary Layer Over Sand Ripples, Thomas P. Pierro
Numerical Simulations Of The Wave Bottom Boundary Layer Over Sand Ripples, Thomas P. Pierro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Surface gravity waves propagating in the nearshore produce an oscillatory freestream potential flow near the seabed and commonly cause regular two-dimensional sand ripples to be formed. The existence of the ripples causes complex turbulent flows to evolve in the boundary layer, which can dissipate significant energy from the surface waves. A time-dependent DNS model is used to solve the Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions on a transformed curvilinear grid for specified wave parameters. When compared to smooth beds, simulations over wavy topographies demonstrate that turbulence is enhanced due to flow separation in the lee of the ripple crests. Shear instabilities …
Oceanic Turbulence Measurement Using An Auv Platform And Development Of Graphical Interfaces For Data Acquisition And Analysis, Eric-Olivier. Leindecker
Oceanic Turbulence Measurement Using An Auv Platform And Development Of Graphical Interfaces For Data Acquisition And Analysis, Eric-Olivier. Leindecker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Application of a small autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is described as a platform for measurement of oceanic turbulence in coastal waters during cold atmospheric fronts. The turbulence package, mounted on the AUV, allows horizontal profiling and measurement of small-scale fluctuations of velocity and temperature and other characteristics of the flow in the ocean mixed layer. The turbulence measurements were made in conjunction with current profile measurements, conductivity, temperature, and depth measurements, providing the background conditions. The navigation and tracking data from the ship and the underwater vehicle are also presented. The primary focus of this research was to collect and …
Outlining A Theory About The Practical Use Of Theory: A Discourse-Practice Theoretic Analysis Of Academic Public Administration Symposia Genre, Cheedy Jaja
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Academic public administration (APA) supposedly provides theoretic and programmatic guidance for bureaucratic public administration (BPA). But in reality, a relationship best characterized as a gap between "theory" (APA) and "practice" (BPA) is deemed to exist between the two social practices. Scholars who have analyzed APA theoretic literature ascribed the theory-practice problematic to methodological inadequacies, the implication being that investment in appropriate social science methods would enhance the intellectual rigor and social utility of APA discursive works. To provide a much richer perspective on the theory-practice problematic, this study conceptualizes theoretic discourses as social actions. When scholars theorize, they invariably want …
Performance Analysis Of Rlp For Nak Based Arq Scheme In Cdma2000 Wireless Systems For Random Error Channels, Daniel J. Easo
Performance Analysis Of Rlp For Nak Based Arq Scheme In Cdma2000 Wireless Systems For Random Error Channels, Daniel J. Easo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis is an effort to present the performance analysis of the RLP in cdma2000, which uses the NAK based ARQ scheme for Random Error Channels. The performance analyses is done in terms of throughput and mean extra delay, which are calculated analytically and are compared with the results generated from the simulations. As the demand for higher data rates increases over the wireless channels, this thesis studies the effect of the random errors over the different types of RLP frame formats and also the performance of the NAK based ARQ mechanism used in these conditions. The simulation provides with …
Performance Evaluation Of A Ds/Cdma Packet Transmission System Under Rician Fading Channel Conditions, Christodoulos. Argyrides
Performance Evaluation Of A Ds/Cdma Packet Transmission System Under Rician Fading Channel Conditions, Christodoulos. Argyrides
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis is concerned with the performance analysis of a DS/CDMA packet radio system under Rician fading channel conditions. Analytic expressions are derived for the probability density functions and cumulative distribution functions of the total signal-to-interference ratio when considering mixed-type of interference sources. The users are divided into two groups: those that apply closed-loop power control and those that apply open-loop power control. Four different scenarios of power control were studied. The outage probability is evaluated for the four different cases of power control. A packet transmission protocol with forward error correction capabilities is considered, and the probability density functions …

Phosphorus Uptake Kinetics Of The Tropical Seagrass Thalassia Testudinum, Amy Frances Gras
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Recent evidence indicates P-limitation in tropical seagrass beds, but to date no data are available on P kinetics of the dominant tropical seagrass Thalassia testudinum. In this study, T. testudinum leaves and roots exhibited Michaelis-Menten saturation kinetics under high (0.5 to 25 muM SRP) and low (0.5 to 5 muM SRP) P concentrations. Leaf Vmax was similar under light and dark conditions. Root Vmax under the high range was slightly lower (30%) in the dark and 2 to 3-fold lower than leaves in the light and dark. Leaf and root P uptake rates were similar at low substrate concentrations. A …
Performance Impairments Of Bluetooth Systems Specified By External Emi And Transmissions From Piconet Neighbors, Victor Daniel Gadda
Performance Impairments Of Bluetooth Systems Specified By External Emi And Transmissions From Piconet Neighbors, Victor Daniel Gadda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This study presents computer simulations directed to address the performance of a baseband Bluetooth system. These simulations help to understand the performance impairments experienced by the Bluetooth systems in the presence of external electromagnetic interference (EMI) and interference that arises from piconet neighbors. The simulation results show that the effect of small scale fading is an important factor that decides the performance of a Bluetooth system. Additionally, it is shown that the interference from piconet neighbors or the interference that stems from devices belonging to the same piconet can be reduced by using frequency-hoping and time synchronization improvised within the …
Play, Problem-Solving And Tool Use: Individual Differences In Preschool Children, Jeffrey Michael Gredlein
Play, Problem-Solving And Tool Use: Individual Differences In Preschool Children, Jeffrey Michael Gredlein
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
While recent research has promoted play as an integral component of a child's cognitive functioning, tool-use has been relatively ignored in this discussion. It may be the case that these two abilities, especially constructive play and problem solving through the use of tools, emerging early in a child's life, have some connection in the formation of higher cognitive processing. From an evolutionary developmental perspective, three-year old children were observed in two free-play sessions and participated in a toy-retrieval task. Results indicate boys engaged in more constructive play than girls and were more likely to use tools to solve a problem. …
Photodegradation Of Propiconazole Fungicide By Ultraviolet Radiation, Omar R. Martinez
Photodegradation Of Propiconazole Fungicide By Ultraviolet Radiation, Omar R. Martinez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The photodegradation of propiconazole (1-{[2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-4-propyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl]methyl}-1 H-1,2,4-triazole), a systemic fungicide, by ultraviolet radiation has been studied. After 12 hours of continuous irradiation, propiconazole undergoes degradation in aqueous solution. The process requires the presence of oxygen and continuous agitation. Similarly, propiconazole undergoes degradation in organic solvents as well (methanol, hexane).
Population Status And Potential Storm Dispersal Events Of Malaclemys Terrapin In Florida Bay, Florida, Lindsay Anastasia Miller
Population Status And Potential Storm Dispersal Events Of Malaclemys Terrapin In Florida Bay, Florida, Lindsay Anastasia Miller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Mitochondrial DNA and nuclear microsatellite analyses were performed on Malaclemys terrapin data. These analyses investigated the genetic variation among subspecies of M. terrapin throughout their range and sought to determine if hurricane mitigated dispersal occurs among populations of a single subspecies, M.t. rhizophorarum. The 700bp mtDNA fragment, ND4-Leu, provided only 1bp transition, and the 421bp D-loop, DES1-DES2, revealed no genetic variation between the seven subspecies. Four polymorphic loci were examined for the microsatellite analyses. These analyses revealed an average pairwise RST of 0.018. This indicates very close genetic identities between the two temporally sampled populations before and after Hurricane Georges. …

The Kalman filter is run forward in time to merge navigational data from an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), a magnetic compass, a GPS/DGPS system and an Ultrashort Baseline (USBL) tracking system. Subsequently, the RTS smoothing algorithm is run backwards in time to find and compensate …
Reliability And Accuracy Of A Gps Unit For Tracking Vehicles In Palm Beach And Broward Counties, Strat Maud Gael Le
Reliability And Accuracy Of A Gps Unit For Tracking Vehicles In Palm Beach And Broward Counties, Strat Maud Gael Le
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this thesis was to study the reliability and the accuracy of GPS positioning in Palm Beach and Broward counties. By studying the predictions of DOP values using Pathfinder Office and performing some statistical analysis on theoretical GPS data using the software SAS 8.0, the conclusion was made that PDOP values not only depend on the number of available satellites, but also on their relative positions. By field testing, and comparing the recorded data with the theoretical GPS data, it was seen that non-DGPS could be rather accurate. Furthermore, it can be justified for a GPS unit to …

Predicting Self-Directed Learning From Personality Type, Arthur Hudson Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of this study was to correlate readiness for self-directed learning with validated indices of personality type, determine which of these indices are significantly related with readiness for self-directed learning, and then predict readiness for self-directed learning from personality type. This study used the MBTI Form-M and SDLRS Form-A to assess personality type and readiness for self-directed learning. The null hypothesis of no significant correlation between any of the eight-indicator scale scores on the MBTI and SDLRS total score was rejected. The scale indicators of Extroversion (E), Introversion (I), Judging (J), and Perceiving (P) were all significantly related to …
Redefining The Pastoral In Contemporary Literature Through The Works Of Flannery O'Connor, Pamelyn. Jongbloed
Redefining The Pastoral In Contemporary Literature Through The Works Of Flannery O'Connor, Pamelyn. Jongbloed
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The pastoral form is one of the oldest in the literary tradition. Historically, the definition of "pastoral" was limited to eclogues and idylls that epitomize a simple way of life, usually with shepherds as their subject. Over time, the pastoral genre has undergone numerous metamorphoses that retain some aspects of a simplistic vision, while contradicting the more complex matters that help to define the human condition. These transformations have allowed for pastoral motifs set in direct opposition to everyday life in order to exemplify human frailties. In Flannery O'Connor's works, the simplicities of natural southern settings are in direct contrast …

Risk Of Hatchling Loss To Nearshore Predators At A High-Density Loggerhead Nesting Beach In Southeast Florida, Kelly Rhoda Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
It has been recognized that mortality is high for juvenile stages of long-lived vertebrates such as sea turtles, however few studies have quantified mortality rates. The objective of this study was to assess the relative risk that hatchlings face in their first few minutes in the water, at the commencement of their offshore migration from a natural high-density nesting beach (Juno/Jupiter, FL). I followed 217 hatchlings at night by kayak, as they left the beach and documented the proportion surviving the initial 15 minutes in the water. Of these, 206 survived for an empirical survival rate of 95%. Tarpon were …

Continuous focal sub-group sampling was conducted, and one-tailed Kruskal-Wallis ANOVAs were used to test for differences between the age groups in frequencies of occurrence of: (1) the 7 behavioral categories, and (2) the 8 most frequently performed behavioral events. Juveniles performed significantly more Other behaviors and Attention to Object …
Resource Guide For Parents And Classroom Teachers Educating Special Education Students To Increase Appropriate Communication With All Individual Education Program (Iep) Team Members, Amy Thomasson Nast
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Historically, individuals with special needs have been isolated from society and educational opportunities. Though the professional care for these individuals improved in two hundred years, only since the passage of Public Law 94-142, in the past twenty-seven years, have the needs and accomplishments of special needs individuals been made public. Based on ten years in the classroom, one special educator experienced the need for parents and classroom teachers to have a resources reference for educating special needs individuals and to improve the communication among parents, classroom teachers and special educators. Each group should have an understanding of some history of …
Scattering And Response Green's Function Modeling Of A Fluid-Loaded Coated Cylindrical Shell, Carole. Treffot
Scattering And Response Green's Function Modeling Of A Fluid-Loaded Coated Cylindrical Shell, Carole. Treffot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
An acoustic compliant coating is applied on a fluid-loaded structure to control the radiated pressure, by decoupling the fluid medium from the vibrating surface. In this thesis the problem of an infinite cylindrical shell immersed in a fluid and entirely covered with an acoustic compliant layer, excited either by a ring force or an incident acoustic plane wave is considered. To model this problem two different approaches are used. The first one, which is available in the literature, is based on multi-layer shell theory. In this approach the scalar and the vector potential formulation are used to solve for the …
Soul Bubba: President Clinton's Use Of The Rhetoric Of Inclusion To Ensure The Loyalty Of The Congressional Black Caucus, Sandra Elizabeth Bernard-Bastien
Soul Bubba: President Clinton's Use Of The Rhetoric Of Inclusion To Ensure The Loyalty Of The Congressional Black Caucus, Sandra Elizabeth Bernard-Bastien
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Clinton's success in engendering loyalty in the African-American, despite his failure to deliver socio-economic and political benefits, presents us with an apparent paradox. The contention is that the answer to this paradox could be found in the rhetorical style and strategies habitually employed by Clinton when speaking to African-Americans. What Clinton said to black America is important, but how he said it, is even more so. Through a critical examination of his eight speeches to the Congressional Black Caucus' Annual Dinner, using rhetorical theory, this research examines how Clinton said what he said. In utilizing the critical approach that examines …
Secondary Orality In "Their Eyes Were Watching God" And "The Color Purple", Africa Ragland Fine
Secondary Orality In "Their Eyes Were Watching God" And "The Color Purple", Africa Ragland Fine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The differences between orality and literacy have been explored by theorists who have focused mainly on the differences in the nature of communication once writing is introduced. However, other theorists have challenged the theory that those characteristics are separate and independent, and there is an argument that the relationship between oral and written communication is not a dichotomy, but a continuum when elements of both can coexist. This idea leads to theory of secondary orality, which describes communication that encompasses both oral and literate elements. Two modern novels, Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Alice Walker's The …

Synthesis Characterization And Ion Exchange Properties Of Aluminum Phosphonates, Rupert Garth Mccormack
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Three aluminum organophosphonate compounds; aluminum phenylphosphonate, aluminum octylphosphonate, and aluminum octadecylphosphonate, have been synthesized by refluxing aluminum nitrate with an excess of the appropriate organophosphonic acid in aqueous, methanol, or butanol solvents respectively. Each of these compounds was found to have pillared layered structures and ligand to metal ratios of 2:1. Additionally, these compounds were shown to exhibit cation exchange properties. In contrast to that observed for conventional cation-exchange resins, the exchange capacities of these compounds are larger for small cations, such as Li+ and Na+, than for larger ions such as Na+ and K+. The results indicate a size …
Target Signature For A Periodic Structure Using A Low-Frequency Broadband Side-Scan Simulator, Jerrold Edward Gilbert Dietz
Target Signature For A Periodic Structure Using A Low-Frequency Broadband Side-Scan Simulator, Jerrold Edward Gilbert Dietz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Many acoustic targets of interest contain features that are periodic in space. This thesis demonstrates that a chirp waveform, 2 kHz to 12 kHz, can detect repetitive structures with periods in the range of 0.125 m to 0.75 m. As aspect angle increases from 0 deg to 90 deg, a frequency shift in the range of 830 Hz to 4800 Hz will occur as the period decreases from 0.75 to 0.125 m. It follows that, spectral analysis can aid in target identification. A sonar propagation model has been developed to simulate the acoustic backscattered energy of a target with periodic …
