The proposed model includes Call Initialization, Call Setup and Control, Capability Exchange and Call Termination, which are the four fundamental features supported by H.323 and SIP for …
Dynamics Of Pre-Columbian Spondylus Trade Across The South American Central Pacific Coast, Alexander Javier Martin
Dynamics Of Pre-Columbian Spondylus Trade Across The South American Central Pacific Coast, Alexander Javier Martin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis provides an analysis of the archeological remains of Spondylus in the Central Pacific Coast of South America. The frequency of occurrence, spatial distribution and cultural context are compared both geographically and temporally to establish the reason for the trade of Spondylus, what form this exchange took through what routes it moved, and how it evolved through time. The sample strongly supports a scenario in which Spondylus trade with Peru stayed relatively small scale and unsophisticated through most of its existence as a series of informal commercial transactions by neighboring communities. It is not until Moche V in the …

Acropora cervicornis is an important Caribbean shallow water reef building coral species which is currently federally protected, and a candidate for the U.S. endangered species list. A. cervicornis is an excellent candidate for fragment salvage or reef transplantation because it exhibits rapid growth rates, can be successfully fragmented, and is tolerant to a wide range of light intensities. The success of restoration efforts for A. cervicornis is dependent upon the complete understanding of its growth parameters. This study documents the culture conditions for growing A. cervicornis in a closed system, and the effects of fragment size and light intensity on …
Examination Of The Relationship Between Groundwater Levels And The Everglades Crayfish, Procambarus Alleni, April E. Huffman
Examination Of The Relationship Between Groundwater Levels And The Everglades Crayfish, Procambarus Alleni, April E. Huffman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Florida wetlands are subject to alteration of ecological function by draining, dredging, filling, and hydrologic modification. Unlike other sources, detecting an ecological response to hydrologic alterations can be subtle and difficult to quantify. To develop wetland hydrologic protection criteria, a hydrologically sensitive indicator species was needed. Everglades crayfish (Procambarus alleni), a trophically critical element of southern Florida wetlands, were evaluated as a potential indicator species. P. alleni excavates temporary burrows to survive Florida's dry season. Burrow lengths were measured through a dry season. Regression analysis was used to determine if burrow depths changed as water levels changed. The relationship was …

Enthymemes In Magazine Advertisements: An Analysis Of Oneida Silverware Ads From 1900 To 1990, Estefany. Mata
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Magazine advertisements use various techniques in order to entice consumers to buy a product. One of those techniques is the use of enthymemes. I analyze the rhetorical effect of enthymemes in a select number of Oneida ads beginning in 1900 and continuing through the 1990s. This chronological progression demonstrates the gradual development of what I term, an enthymematic magazine ad. In this type of advertisement, the headline and the image work together to evoke certain emotions in readers leaving them to complete the message by providing information that is well-known by the target audience. The added effort on the part …
Gender Identity Effects On School Outcomes, Medeia. Sharif
Gender Identity Effects On School Outcomes, Medeia. Sharif
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Children's (Grades 4--8) gender identity was examined as a predictor of academic self-concept, achievement, attitudes, and conduct. Three gender identity components were assessed: (a) feelings of being typical of one's gender, (b) feeling content with one's gender assignment, and (c) feeling pressured to conform to one's gender. It was expected that gender typicality and contentedness would be positive influences, whereas felt pressure would be a negative influence. Results were partially supportive, but showed that relationships varied substantially with child gender and the gender-normative relevance of a given academic domain (math vs. English). It was concluded that gender identity factors have …
Factors Influencing Face/Core Crack Propagation In Pvc Foam Core Sandwich, Gillmer Manuel Viana
Factors Influencing Face/Core Crack Propagation In Pvc Foam Core Sandwich, Gillmer Manuel Viana
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Fracture toughness of a large range of PVC foam cores was determined using the single edge notch bend (SENB) specimen. Debond fracture toughness for sandwich specimens with the same foam cores was characterized using the TSD specimen. Examination of the crack propagation path in specimens with adequate face/core adhesion revealed that the debonding process occurred by crack propagation in the core, near the face/core interface. It was observed that the debond toughness and core toughness are of similar magnitude although the debond toughness exceeds the core toughness, especially for the higher density cores. Possible reasons for the elevation of the …
Gapless Alignment Revisited, Elizabeth Anne Raley
Gapless Alignment Revisited, Elizabeth Anne Raley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The purpose of sequence alignment is to detect mutual similarity, characterized by the so-called "alignment score", between sequences compared. To quantitatively assess the confidence level of an alignment result requires the knowledge of alignment score statistics under a certain null model and is the central issue in sequence alignment. In this thesis, the score statistics of Markov null model were revisited and the score statistics of non-Markov null model were investigated for two state-of-the-art algorithms, namely, the gapless Smith-Waterman and Hybrid algorithms. These two algorithms were further used to find highly related signals in unrelated sequences and in weakly related …
False Reflections: Appearance Esteem Attacks In Advertising In "Cosmopolitan", "Working Woman", "Gq", And "Maxim", Rhonda Ilene Trust
False Reflections: Appearance Esteem Attacks In Advertising In "Cosmopolitan", "Working Woman", "Gq", And "Maxim", Rhonda Ilene Trust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
This thesis examines the advertisements in Cosmopolitan, Working Woman, Maxim, and GQ that qualify as Appearance Esteem (AE) ads. AE ads attack women and/or men in terms of self esteem based in appearance. A content analysis combined with a textual analysis produced results which show that women are attacked more directly, and more personally than men. The results demonstrate that the AE ads help to establish narrow standards of appearance for both women and men in society, however it is argued that these messages may lead to negative health behaviors, lower self confidence, and an unhealthy obsession to maintain one's …

Gender, Power, Interpellation And Body Image: Creating Consumer Subjectivities In "Mode Magazine", Danielle D. Bolla
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Images of beauty are social constructs that exist in historical contexts and are subject to change. A correlation may be made between social inequality and how images of beauty are used to maintain the status quo. Mode Magazine is an unique fashion magazine that depicts women of different sizes. This thesis examines how "realistically sized" images of women are represented, and whether representation challenges beauty hegemony. It critically examines both visual and non-visual textual representations using Hall's encoding/decoding model to discern potential meanings. It evaluates advertisements and articles for how women are interpellated by the text. It concludes by asserting …

Hildegard Of Bingen: An Analysis Of Feminine Images In The Songs To Mary, Virgins And Widows, Beverly R. Lomer
Hildegard Of Bingen: An Analysis Of Feminine Images In The Songs To Mary, Virgins And Widows, Beverly R. Lomer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Hildegard of Bingen, while outwardly remaining within the boundaries of religious and societal orthodoxy, redefined the nature of woman into a more positive one by creatively reworking conventional viewpoints such as the value of humility, virginity and divine motherhood. Her ideas were most clearly expressed in the Symphonia songs dedicated to Mary, virgins and widows. In this paper, the ten songs to Mary, in which Hildegard most directly restates the feminine, are analyzed in terms of text/music relationships as they relate to this theme. The remaining six pieces for Mary, two of the songs to virgins and the one for …
High-Speed Acoustic Communication In Shallow Water Using Spatio-Temporal Adaptive Array Processing, Pierre-Philippe Beaujean
High-Speed Acoustic Communication In Shallow Water Using Spatio-Temporal Adaptive Array Processing, Pierre-Philippe Beaujean
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
A novel method of achieving stable high-speed underwater acoustic communication with a fairly low-complexity of implementation is proposed. The proposed approach is to split the space and time processing into two separate sub-optimal processes. As a result, processing complexity is significantly reduced and the instabilities associated with large tap vectors at large time-frequency spread products are reduced. The proposed space-time signal processing method utilizes a different beamformer optimization strategy compared to the time domain optimization strategy. This allows to separately adjust the adaptation parameters for the spatial and temporal characteristics of the signal, which have vastly different requirements. The time …
Hiro Of The Platonic: Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash", Carl John Boehm
Hiro Of The Platonic: Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash", Carl John Boehm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
In The Republic, Plato constructs the ideal city-state built on the principle of justice. Plato establishes an urban utopia with a set of morals through which the citizen helps the state and the state helps the citizen. Centuries after Plato's Republic, Neal Stephenson presents in Snow Crash, a cyberpunk adventure, a virtual city known as the Metaverse. Hiro Protagonist, as his name implies, defends his virtual city from a threatening virus in the same way that a citizen in Plato's Republic would protect the city-state. An analysis of Snow Crash using ideas from The Republic reveals the "hacker" to be …
Green Goddess Returns: Batman's Poison Ivy As A Symbol Of Emerging Ecofeminist Consciousness, John-David. Checkett
Green Goddess Returns: Batman's Poison Ivy As A Symbol Of Emerging Ecofeminist Consciousness, John-David. Checkett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The Interdisciplinary field of ecofeminism is based upon the premise that important connections exist between women and non-human nature, and that both have suffered abuses, presently and historically, from people operating from a patriarchal conceptual framework. A large and important part of ecofeminism is ecofeminist spirituality, which departs from Euro-Western, patriarchal, monotheistic religions in its positions on hierarchy and dualistic thinking. Many of the ideals of both ecofeminism and ecofeminist spirituality are embodied in the popular culture figure known as Poison Ivy. She projects the image of the power of women and nature, which includes the powers of death as …
Hydrodynamic Analysis Of An Underwater Body Including Free-Surface Effects, Christophe. Puaut
Hydrodynamic Analysis Of An Underwater Body Including Free-Surface Effects, Christophe. Puaut
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Boundary integral algorithms are developed to analyze three-dimensional inviscid fluid-body interactions, including the nonlinear free-surface effects. Hydrodynamic coefficients are computed for various body geometries, some corresponding to that of small underwater vehicles, in deep waters and near the free surface. The fully nonlinear unsteady wave-radiation problem corresponding to forced submerged-body oscillations and forward translation are solved using the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation (Longuet-Higgins and Cokelet, 1976). By implementing the leading-order free-surface conditions on the calm surface, linear time-domain solutions are also obtained. The nonlinear and linear results are compared to quantify the nonlinear free-surface effects. Linear frequency-domain analysis of the wave-body …

Identification Strategies And Unobtrusive Control In Organizational Change Initiatives: A Textual Analysis Of Corporate Newsletters, Laurie A. Glover
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
To be successful, organizations that undertake a large-scale planned change initiative must maintain employee commitment and loyalty to the organization. Identification with the organization can support that objective and is crucial in changing organizations when managers often introduce different cultural assumptions, values, and norms than those held by the organization's members. Employee identification with the organization is also pivotal in the employee's decision making process. This study analyses a representative sample of an organization's newsletter published during a reengineering project. Identification strategies of common ground, the assumed we, antithesis and unifying symbols are used as the foundation for analysis. Results …

Labor Approach To The Development Of The Self Or "Modern Personality": The Case Of Public Education, Paul C. Mocombe
Labor Approach To The Development Of The Self Or "Modern Personality": The Case Of Public Education, Paul C. Mocombe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
Max Weber, Karl Mannheim, and Karl Marx suggested that there is a relationship between economic and political institutions and that behaviors and attitudes are influenced by this. Viewing this postulate as a conception which posits the economic mode of production as the locus of causality for culture, this examination of capitalism as culture, investigates how education and its pedagogical techniques, as a means of "enculturation," reflects the capitalist economic mode of production. Building on the theoretical notions in the Sociology of knowledge and Structuralism, this hermeneutical analysis discusses how pedagogical techniques and curriculum arrangements of public schools in capitalist societies …
Impact Of National Culture And Other National-Level Indicators On Information Technology (It) Diffusion, Kallol Kumar Bagchi
Impact Of National Culture And Other National-Level Indicators On Information Technology (It) Diffusion, Kallol Kumar Bagchi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009
The contribution of this research is in positing that national level indicators matter in IT adoption and diffusion and providing empirical support for this theory. National level indicators are scantily represented in IT adoption or diffusion theory. Empirical results on this are almost absent in literature. Diffusion theory models of Rogers (1985) and Kwon and Zmud (1987) do not address national level attributes. National level indicators like culture, economy, institutional factors, physical distance from the innovating nation, IT infrastructure etc., could all be relevant to IT diffusion. Three types of major models (models based on adoption and growth rate factors …
