Condensation Of Carbon In Radioactive Supernova Gas, Donald D. Clayton, Ethan A-N. Deneault, Bradley S. Meyer Nov 2001

Condensation Of Carbon In Radioactive Supernova Gas, Donald D. Clayton, Ethan A-N. Deneault, Bradley S. Meyer

Publications

The chemistry of carbon molecules leading to the formation of large carbon-bearing molecules and dust in the interior of an expanding supernova is explored and the equations governing their abundances are solved. A steady state between production and destruction is set up early and evolves adiabatically as the supernova evolves. Simple solutions for that steady state limit yield the abundance of each linear carbon molecule and its dependence on the C/O atomic ratio in the gas. Carbon dust condenses from initially gaseous C and O atoms because Compton electrons produced by the radioactivity cause dissociation of the CO molecules, which …

Identification Of Screwworms, Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), With A Monoclonal Antibody-Based Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Mab-Elisa), J. L. Figarola, Steven R. Skoda, Dennis R. Berkebile, John E. Foster Nov 2001

Identification Of Screwworms, Cochliomyia Hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), With A Monoclonal Antibody-Based Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (Mab-Elisa), J. L. Figarola, Steven R. Skoda, Dennis R. Berkebile, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Myiasis caused by screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel), is devastating to warmblooded animals and economically important to livestock producers. It is difficult to distinguish these pests, immature screwworms, from immatures of other non-pest fly species that often occur in animal wounds; it would be helpful to have tools available that do not rely on morphological characteristics. We developed twomonoclonal antibodies (MAbs), highly specific for the screwworm, and used them in an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (MAb-ELISA), that differentiated screwworm eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults from those of the closely related secondary screwworm, C. macellaria (Fabricius) as well as Phormia regina (Meigen), Phaenicia …

Three-Dimensional Spectral Classification Of Low-Metallicity Stars Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shawn Snider, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al. Nov 2001

Three-Dimensional Spectral Classification Of Low-Metallicity Stars Using Artificial Neural Networks, Shawn Snider, Ted Von Hippel, Et Al.

Publications

We explore the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the estimation of atmospheric parameters (Teff, log g, and [Fe/H]) for Galactic F- and G-type stars. The ANNs are fed with medium-resolution (Δλ ~ 1-2 Å) non-flux-calibrated spectroscopic observations. From a sample of 279 stars with previous high-resolution determinations of metallicity and a set of (external) estimates of temperature and surface gravity, our ANNs are able to predict Teff with an accuracy of σ(Teff) = 135-150 K over the range 4250 ≤ Teff ≤ 6500 K, log g with an accuracy …

The Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Results Of A 4-Year Investigation, Susan M. Sheridan, John W. Eagle, Richard J. Cowan, William Mickelson Nov 2001

The Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Results Of A 4-Year Investigation, Susan M. Sheridan, John W. Eagle, Richard J. Cowan, William Mickelson

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) is a structured indirect form of service delivery in which parents, teachers, and other support staff are joined to work together to address the academic, social, or behavioral needs of an individual for whom all parties bear some responsibility. In this article, outcome data from 4 years of federally funded projects in the area of CBC are presented. Thirty graduate students were trained in CBC and were responsible for providing consultation services to parents and teachers of students with disabilities or at risk for academic failure. Consultation clients included 52 students with disabilities such as behavior …

Requirements For Education Meterial In Color Reproduction For Photojournalists, Gregory Kimmich Nov 2001

Requirements For Education Meterial In Color Reproduction For Photojournalists, Gregory Kimmich

Theses

This thesis project examines a skills gap involving new technologies within photographic departments of many newspaper organizations. Traditional film based photography is now used in conjunction with digital photography. After images are acquired, photojournalists create electronic color separations within color imaging software. Quite often these separations are created without an understanding of the rules and concepts that govern quality color reproduction in newsprint. As advancements continue in digital imaging and prepress environments, skills must be acquired to ensure optimum color reproduction. This thesis project examines the educational theories of Walter Dick, Lou Carey and Charles Layne as they relate to …

Information Technology And The Goals Of Standards-Based Instruction: Advances And Continuing Challenges, Douglas A. Archbald

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

This article examines goals of standards-based reform in education and ways in which developments in information technology have facilitated those goals.
