The Effects Of Landmines On Women In The Middle East, Mary Ruberry Dec 2001

The Effects Of Landmines On Women In The Middle East, Mary Ruberry

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The countries of the Middle East are beset with troubles caused by nature as well as man-made strife. The region is prey to earthquakes, droughts and flooding, and years of conflict have left the region riddled with landmines and UXO. As a result, national economies have suffered, leaving social and medical infrastructure battered and scarred. Regional turmoil has caused the flight of millions of refugees and displaced persons who survive in sparse camps, many for decades.

Npa: Improving Lives In The Middle East And Throughout The World, Cisr Jmu

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

An organization based on human equality, NPA "…endeavors to improve the conditions under which individuals live, and to contribute to a more humane society for all." Accordingly, landmine issues are a fundamental element of their mission. Since 1992, when they entered Cambodia, NPA has been heavily involved in mine clearance throughout the world, becoming one of the world’s largest humanitarian mine clearance organizations and concentrating most of their labors on educating local populations about the dangers of landmines. More recently, they began to focus their efforts in the Middle East and Northern Africa, where they began an extensive program in …

New International Standards Debut October 1, 2001, Suzanne Fiederlein

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

On October 1, 2001 the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) officially released twenty-two documents that comprise the initial set of new International Mine Action Standards (IMAS). The standards replace the International Standards for Humanitarian Mine Clearance Operations. The new standards represent the culmination of two years of work to revise and expand the old standards based on changes in practices, procedures and norms that emerged from the continuing operations of mine action programs around the globe.

Pretreatment Characteristics Of Legally Coerced Drug Treatment Seekers, Bridgett Augustino Dec 2001

Pretreatment Characteristics Of Legally Coerced Drug Treatment Seekers, Bridgett Augustino

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study examines the sociodemographics, drug use, criminal, and treatment histories of 598 residential and outpatient legally coerced drug treatment seekers in the Kentucky Treatment Outcome and Performance Pilot Studies Enhancement Project. Analyses examined whether users/addicts entering chemical dependency treatment under legal coercion differed from nonlegally coerced treatment seekers. Stanley Cohen's theoretical model of social control provided the theoretical framework for the study. Results showed demographic and behavioral differences were noted between respondents under no coercion and those under legal coercion on gender, age, educational status, pretreatment criminality and current treatment modality. In addition, differences between the legally coerced and …

The Effect Of Lead Acetate On The Susceptibility Of C3heb/Fej Mice Infected With The Parasite Trypanosoma Cruzi, Savonna Warren Dec 2001

The Effect Of Lead Acetate On The Susceptibility Of C3heb/Fej Mice Infected With The Parasite Trypanosoma Cruzi, Savonna Warren

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Lead has been mined by man for centuries with evidence of its use dating back 6000 years. Chronic exposure to lead can result in encephalopathy, anemia, and nephropathy. Today, cases of lead poisoning are uncommon; however, lead continues to be incorporated into the body through subclinical exposures. These low dosages of lead have been shown to have a deleterious effect on the immune system. Experimental animals exposed to low levels of lead are unable to effectively respond to a number of bacterial and viral challenges. The present study focuses on the relationship between lead and parasitic infection. Parasitemia, mortality, serum …

Phonemic Awareness In Preschool Children In Relation To Reading Practices In The Home, Anna Hayes Dec 2001

Phonemic Awareness In Preschool Children In Relation To Reading Practices In The Home, Anna Hayes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Research suggests that phonemic awareness predicts later reading achievement and that children from low-SES families are "at-risk" for failing to develop phonemic awareness. Before children enter school, they spend the majority of their time with their caregivers. Therefore, activities that take place in the home are of importance when looking at what fosters development. The present study focused on children participating in two Head Start programs and on their families as well. The parents were interviewed to learn about the home activities, and the children were given a phonemic awareness assessment. The study found that the majority of parents reported …

Relative Climatic Effects Of Landcover Change And Elevated Carbon Dioxide Combined With Aerosols: A Comparison Of Model Results And Observations, Thomas N. Chase, Roger A. Pielke, T. G. F. Kittel, M. Zhao, A. Pitman, Steven W. Running, Ramakrishna R. Nemani Dec 2001

Relative Climatic Effects Of Landcover Change And Elevated Carbon Dioxide Combined With Aerosols: A Comparison Of Model Results And Observations, Thomas N. Chase, Roger A. Pielke, T. G. F. Kittel, M. Zhao, A. Pitman, Steven W. Running, Ramakrishna R. Nemani

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

In this study we examine the possibility that the historical total of human landcover changes have had a comparable effect on climate to that of historical increases in CO2 and aerosols. We compared results from two coupled climate model simulations which investigated transient climate changes produced by observed historical changes of CO2 combined with sulfate aerosol forcing with two other climate model simulations that examined the equilibrium climatic effects of currently observed changes in landcover from its natural state. We found that simulated, near-surface temperature anomalies due to transient increases in atmospheric CO2 combined with aerosols at …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel As(V)-Reducing Bacterium: Implications For Arsenic Mobilization And The Genus Desulfitobacterium, Allison Niggemyer, Stefan Spring, Erko Stackebrandt, Frank Rosenzweig Dec 2001

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel As(V)-Reducing Bacterium: Implications For Arsenic Mobilization And The Genus Desulfitobacterium, Allison Niggemyer, Stefan Spring, Erko Stackebrandt, Frank Rosenzweig

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Dissimilatory arsenate-reducing bacteria have been implicated in the mobilization of arsenic from arsenic-enriched sediments. An As(V)-reducing bacterium, designated strain GBFH, was isolated from arsenic-contaminated sediments of Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Strain GBFH couples the oxidation of formate to the reduction of As(V) when formate is supplied as the sole carbon source and electron donor. Additionally, strain GBFH is capable of reducing As(V), Fe(III), Se(VI), Mn(IV) and a variety of oxidized sulfur species. 16S ribosomal DNA sequence comparisons reveal that strain GBFH is closely related to Desulfitobacterium hafniense DCB-2T and Desulfitobacterium frappieri PCP-1T. Comparative physiology demonstrates that D …

Spanish-English Code Switching In A Bilingual Academic Context, Ruth R. Becker Dec 2001

Spanish-English Code Switching In A Bilingual Academic Context, Ruth R. Becker

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study investigates the Spanish-English code switching of 60 elementary Mexican American students in a story retelling activity. The students' story retellings were examined according to Becker's (1997) model of code switching: structural linguistic, internal psycholinguistic, and external social factors. Results suggest there is a positive relationship between code-switched story retelling, oral language usage, and enhanced narrative skills. Implications suggest that teachers explore the use of code switching in a story retelling activity as a practical way to enhance bilingual elementary students' verbal skills and reading development.

Global Focus On Landmines In Afghanistan, Joe Lokey Dec 2001

Global Focus On Landmines In Afghanistan, Joe Lokey

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Even though it has one of the longest running mine clearance programs, Afghanistan is still believed to be one of the most severely mine-affected countries in the world. The Mine Action Program in Afghanistan (MAPA), a United Nations-supported entity, is one of the largest and most successful national programs in the world and one almost exclusively run by the Afghans themselves with fewer than a dozen or so of the 5,000-person workforce being non-nationals.

Efficient Level 2 Surveys Using Mechanical Detonators: Returning More Land, Creating More Wealth, Saving More Lives, Daniel Wolf, Steven Barmazel

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The biggest problem facing demining enterprises is this: productivity of individual deminers is so low that total labor costs per unit of land cleared remain exorbitant—despite minuscule wages in mine-affected countries. Clearing agricultural land in developing countries typically costs many times the land’s expected mine-free annual revenues. Most remediation is uneconomic for public and private parties alike, and funding is never enough.

Combating Subterranean Terror, Her Majesty Queen Noor

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Over the past 25 years, driving past Jordan Valley mine fields fenced off by barbed wire, visiting with landmine victims, or tallying the grim statistics, I have grieved for the children and adults in the Middle East routinely maimed or killed by these weapons of mass destruction in slow motion. Our region has been called the landmine heartland of the world, with an estimated 50 million mines scarring the earth from Morocco to Afghanistan. Beyond the physical and psychological torture of those who have been injured, or lost loved ones, is the further punishment of land made desolate, lost to …

The United States Central Command’S Role In The Middle East, Margaret S. Busé Dec 2001

The United States Central Command’S Role In The Middle East, Margaret S. Busé

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The U.S. CENTCOM humanitarian mine action program provides a successful interaction between US military trainers, the host country, the indigenous community and the non-governmental organizations while ridding the host country of landmines. Their train-the-trainer approach insures that there is an indigenous demining operation in place before U.S. forces exit the country.

Red Cross/Red Crescent Mine Action Involvement In The Middle East, Laurence Desvignes Dec 2001

Red Cross/Red Crescent Mine Action Involvement In The Middle East, Laurence Desvignes

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The Middle East is an area significantly impacted by landmines, and there is a great need for the spread of mine awareness in mine-affected countries. The Red Cross and Red Crescent are hard at work in the region, attempting to raise mine awareness among the citizens of these nations.

Response To Bob Keeley’S Letter To The Journal Of Mine Action, Daniel Wolf, Steven Barmazel

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

We appreciate Bob being "picky" in examining our article on applying a public-health approach to demining. The lives at stake in demining are worth the extra care. As it happens, we generally agree with his views.

First, let’s do get our terminology straight. Thanks, Bob, for the lesson in British diction. We had hoped that placing the modifier mechanical before detonator would make our intentions clear. That it did not, we apologize to our readers. More substantive issues await us.

As Bob rightly points out, our ideas are not new. The public-health/cost-benefit approach predates the birth of everyone reading these …

A Longitudinal Investigation Of Information Processing And Cognitive Organization In Clinical Depression: Stability Of Schematic Interconnectedness., D J Dozois, K S Dobson Dec 2001

A Longitudinal Investigation Of Information Processing And Cognitive Organization In Clinical Depression: Stability Of Schematic Interconnectedness., D J Dozois, K S Dobson

Psychology Publications

This study longitudinally investigated information processing and cognitive organization in clinical depression. The main hypothesis was that individuals whose depression had remitted would show a significant cognitive shift on information processing (e.g., deactivation of negative processing) but not on cognitive organizational tasks, Forty-five individuals with clinical depression completed 2 information processing and 2 cognitive organizational tasks at initial assessment. At 6-month follow-up, the sample (23 remitted, 22 stable depressed) was readministered the tasks. As expected, information processing shifted significantly in individuals who had improved symptomatically, whereas negative cognitive organizational indices remained stable. The implications of these results are discussed as …
