Fluvial Processes And Passive Rehabilitation Of The Lisbon Bottom Side-Channel Chute, Lower Missouri River, Robert B. Jacobson, Mark S. Laustrup, Michael D. Chapman Jan 2001

Fluvial Processes And Passive Rehabilitation Of The Lisbon Bottom Side-Channel Chute, Lower Missouri River, Robert B. Jacobson, Mark S. Laustrup, Michael D. Chapman

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Multiple large floods in 1993-1997 on the Lower Missouri River carved a side-channel chute through the river bottom at Lisbon, Missouri. Although similar in some respects to engineered side-channel chutes designed for habitat rehabilitation projects, the Lisbon Bottom chute has been unique in that it was allowed to evolve for more than four years with minimal stabilization. During the wet years, 1996-1999, the chute was subjected to abnormally high discharges and passed as much as 20% of the total discharge of the Missouri River. Relatively unrestrained fluvial processes during this time created a wide channel with highly diverse habitats. The …

Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday Jan 2001

Origin Of Late Quaternary Dune Fields On The Southern High Plains Of Texas And New Mexico, Daniel R. Muhs, Vance T. Holliday

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Mostly stabilized late Holocene eolian sands on the Southern High Plains of the United States were studied to determine their origins and to assess whether present dune stability depends more strongly on sediment supply, sediment availability, or transport limitations. Geomorphic, sedimentological, and geochemical trends indicate that late Holocene dunes formed under westerly paleowinds, broadly similar to those of today. Mineralogical and geochemical data indicate that the most likely source for the sands is not the Pecos River valley, but the Pleistocene Blackwater Draw Formation, an older, extensive eolian deposit in the region. These observations suggest that new sand is supplied …

Use Of Macroinvertebrates To Identify Cultivated Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 2001

Use Of Macroinvertebrates To Identify Cultivated Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We evaluated the use of macroinvertebrates as a potential tool to identify dry and intensively farmed temporary and seasonal wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region. The techniques we designed and evaluated used the dried remains of invertebrates or their egg banks in soils as indicators of wetlands. For both the dried remains of invertebrates and their egg banks, we weighted each taxon according to its affinity for wetlands or uplands. Our study clearly demonstrated that shells, exoskeletons, head capsules, eggs, and other remains of macroinvertebrates can be used to identify wetlands, even when they are dry, intensively farmed, and difficult …

Evolution Of Soils On Quaternary Reef Terraces Of Barbados, West Lndies, Daniel R. Muhs Jan 2001

Evolution Of Soils On Quaternary Reef Terraces Of Barbados, West Lndies, Daniel R. Muhs

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Soils on uplifted Quaternary reef terraces of Barbados, ~125,000 to ~700,000 yr old, form a climo-chronosequence and show changes in physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties with terrace age. Parent materials are dust derived from the Sahara, volcanic ash from the Lesser Antilles island arc, and detrital carbonate from the underlying reef limestone. Although some terrace soils are probably eroded, soils or their remnants are redder and more clay-rich with increasing terrace age. Profile-average Al2O3 and Fe2O3 content increases with terrace age, which partially reflects the increasing clay content, but dithionite-extractable Fe also increases with …

Evidence For Millennial-Scale Climate Change During Marine Isotope Stages 2 And 3 At Little Lake, Western Oregon, U.S.A., Laurie D. Grigg, Cathy Whitlock, Walter E. Dean Jan 2001

Evidence For Millennial-Scale Climate Change During Marine Isotope Stages 2 And 3 At Little Lake, Western Oregon, U.S.A., Laurie D. Grigg, Cathy Whitlock, Walter E. Dean

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Pollen and geochemical data from Little Lake, western Oregon, suggest several patterns of millennial-scale environmental change during marine isotope stage (MIS) 2 (14,100–27,600 cal yr B.P.) and the latter part of MIS 3 (27,600–42,500 cal yr B.P.). During MIS 3, a series of transitions between warm- and cold-adapted taxa indicate that temperatures oscillated by ca. 2±–4±C every 1000–3000 yr. Highs and lows in summer insolation during MIS 3 are generally associated with the warmest and coldest intervals. Warm periods at Little Lake correlate with warm sea-surface temperatures in the Santa Barbara Basin. Changes in the strength of the subtropical high …

Two Checkpoint Complexes Are Independently Recruited To Sites Of Dna Damage In Vivo, Justine Melo Jan 2001

Two Checkpoint Complexes Are Independently Recruited To Sites Of Dna Damage In Vivo, Justine Melo

Biology Faculty Scholarship

The Ddc1/Rad17/Mec3 complex and Rad24 are DNA damage checkpoint components with limited homology to replication factors PCNA and RF-C, respectively, suggesting that these factors promote checkpoint activation by "sensing" DNA damage directly. Mec1 kinase, however, phosphorylates the checkpoint protein Ddc2 in response to damage in the absence of all other known checkpoint proteins, suggesting instead that Mec1 and/or Ddc2 may act as the initial sensors of DNA damage. In this paper, we show that Ddc1 or Ddc2 fused to GFP localizes to a single subnuclear focus following an endonucleolytic break. Other forms of damage result in a greater number of …

Estimated Areal Extent Of Colonies Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In The Northern Great Plains, John Sidle, Douglas Johnson, Betty Euliss

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

During 1997-1998, we undertook an aerial survey, with an aerial line-intercept technique, to estimate the extent of colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in the northern Great Plains states of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. We stratified the survey based on knowledge of colony locations, computed 2 types of estimates for each stratum, and combined ratio estimates for high-density strata with average density estimates for low-density strata. Estimates of colony areas for black-tailed prairie dogs were derived from the average percentages of lines intercepting prairie dog colonies and ratio estimators. We selected the best estimator …

Umingmakstrongylus Pallikuukensis (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae) In Gastropods: Larval Morphology, Morphometrics, And Development Rates, Susan J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, Lydden Polley Jan 2001

Umingmakstrongylus Pallikuukensis (Nematoda: Protostrongylidae) In Gastropods: Larval Morphology, Morphometrics, And Development Rates, Susan J. Kutz, Eric P. Hoberg, Lydden Polley

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Morphological and morphometric aspects of larval development of Umingmakstrongylus pallikuukensis in Deroceras laeve and the effects of temperature on development rates in D. laeve and Deroceras reticulatum were investigated in the laboratory. Larval stages were best differentiated by separation of cuticular sheaths, tail structure, and viability following digestion. Growth in body and esophagus width was observed during the first-stage within the intermediate host, but the major increases in body length and width occurred immediately following the second molt. Larval development in D. laeve and D. reticulatum occurred more rapidly at warmer temperatures. The calculated threshold temperatures were 8.5 and 9.5 …

Phylogey Of Steinernema Travassos, 1927 (Cephalobina: Steinnematidae) Inferred From Ribosomal Dna Sequences And Morphological Characters, S. Patricia Stock, James F. Campbell, Steven A. Nadler

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Entomopathogenic nematodes in Steinernema, together with their symbiont bacteria Xenorhabdus, are obligate and lethal parasites of insects that can provide effective biological control of some important lepidopteran, dipteran, and coleopteran pests of commercial crops. Phylogenetic relationships among 21 Steinernema species were estimated using 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences and morphological characters. Sequences of the rDNA internal transcribed spacers were obtained to provide additional molecular characters to resolve relationships among Steinernema carpocapsae, Steinernema scapterisci, Steinernema siamkayai, and Steinernema monticolum. Four equally parsimonious trees resulted from combined analysis of 28S sequences and 22 morphological characters. Clades inferred from …

Synlophe In Ostertagia Cf. Kasakhstanica (Nematoda: Ostertagiinae), The Minor Morphotype Of O. Bisonis From Western North America, Eric P. Hoberg, Arthur Abrams

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Ostertagia cf. kasakhstanica. the putative minor morphotype of the polymorphie ostertagiine O. bisonis, is reported in Bison bison from South Dakota. Descriptions of the synlophe and details of other diagnostic characters useful in identification and differentiation of this minor morphotype from other ostertagiines in wild and domestic ruminants from western North America are presented. Laterally, the cervical synlophe is consistent with Type Ib pattern among ostertagiines and is within the range of variation previously described for O. bisonis. Among recognized minor morphotypes of ostertagiines in wild and domestic ruminants from North America, O. kasakhstanica is distinct from …

New Host And Geographic Records For Two Protostrongylids In Dall's Sheep, Susan J. Kutz, A. M. Veitch, Eric P. Hoberg, B. T. Elkin, Emily J. Jenkins, L. Polley

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Biodiversity survey and inventory have resulted in new information on the distribution of Protostrongylidae in Dall’s sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) from the Northwest Territories (Northwest Territories, Canada) and from Alaska (Alaska, USA). In 1998, Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei adults were found for the first time in the skeletal muscles of Dall’s sheep in the Mackenzie Mountains (Northwest Territories). Adult P. odocoilei were associated with petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages and localized myositis; eggs and larvae in the lungs were associated with diffuse granulomatous pneumonia. Experimental infections of the slugs Deroceras laeve and Deroceras reticulatum with dorsal-spined first-stage larvae assumed to be …

The Impact Of Unmediated Document Delivery On Faculty Use Of Traditional Interlibrary Loan At Wichita State University, Kathy A. Downes, Ted Naylor Jan 2001

The Impact Of Unmediated Document Delivery On Faculty Use Of Traditional Interlibrary Loan At Wichita State University, Kathy A. Downes, Ted Naylor

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

In these times of growing journal prices and shrinking budgets, alternative methods of information access are a necessity. Document delivery services have become an important alternative to providing information access beyond traditional interlibrary loan services. This article analyzes the effect the "unmediated" EbscoDoc document delivery service had on traditional interlibrary loan in a medium sized academic library. Access to the service was provided to faculty members at Wichita State University for a period of approximately two years. Use of the service varied from faculty members who ordered one article to the "super" users who ordered from 100 to 400 documents. …

Bibliographic Instruction For The Geoscience Undergraduate: A Digital Wonderland Or Lost In Space?, Adonna Fleming Jan 2001

Bibliographic Instruction For The Geoscience Undergraduate: A Digital Wonderland Or Lost In Space?, Adonna Fleming

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Technology has not only changed the format in which students access information, it has also changed the pedagogy of bibliographic instruction. Today, bibliographic instruction takes place in high-tech classrooms where librarians are teaching students computer skills, online search techniques, and most importantly how to determine what is appropriate for their research in a Web environment. This paper will demonstrate how library research has changed from the past to the present by reconstructing the search for sources used in the bibliography of a paper written by an undergraduate in the 1980's.

The Jacobson Radical For Analytic Crossed Products, Allan P. Donsig, Aristides Katavolos, Antonios Manoussos Jan 2001

The Jacobson Radical For Analytic Crossed Products, Allan P. Donsig, Aristides Katavolos, Antonios Manoussos

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We characterise the Jacobson radical of an analytic crossed product C0(X) ר Zd+, answering a question first raised by Arveson and Josephson in 1969. In fact, we characterise the Jacobson radical of analytic crossed products C0(X) ר Zd+. This consists of all elements whose ‘Fourier coefficients’ vanish on the recurrent points of the dynamical system (and the first one is zero). The multi-dimensional version requires a variation of the notion of recurrence, taking into account the various degrees of freedom.

Efficient Traitor Tracing Algorithms Using List Decoding, Alice Silverberg, Jessica Staddon, Judy L. Walker Jan 2001

Efficient Traitor Tracing Algorithms Using List Decoding, Alice Silverberg, Jessica Staddon, Judy L. Walker

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We use powerful new techniques for list decoding error-correcting codes to efficiently trace traitors. Although much work has focused on constructing traceability schemes, the complexity of the tracing algorithm has received little attention. Because the TA tracing algorithm has a runtime of O(N) in general, where N is the number of users, it is inefficient for large populations. We produce schemes for which the TA algorithm is very fast. The IPP tracing algorithm, though less efficient, can list all coalitions capable of constructing a given pirate. We give evidence that when using an algebraic structure, the ability to …

Leader–Member Exchange And Its Dimensions: Effects Of Self-Effort And Other’S Effort On Relationship Quality, John Maslyn, Mary Uhl-Bien Jan 2001

Leader–Member Exchange And Its Dimensions: Effects Of Self-Effort And Other’S Effort On Relationship Quality, John Maslyn, Mary Uhl-Bien

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Two hundred thirty-two manager-subordinate dyads provided data on the effort expended toward the development of leader-member exchange (LMX) relationships, how such effort related to expectations about relationship quality, and intentions to exert future effort toward relationship development. For both managers and subordinates, higher quality LMX relationships were reported and expectations were met when the other member of the dyad put forth effort into relationship development. One’s own higher effort coupled with lower effort by the other was associated with a lower quality LMX relationship. Examination of the 4 dimensions of LMX (R. C. Liden & J. M. Maslyn, 1998) revealed …

The Private Attorney General In A Global Age: Public Interests In Private International Antitrust Litigation, Hannah Buxbaum Jan 2001

The Private Attorney General In A Global Age: Public Interests In Private International Antitrust Litigation, Hannah Buxbaum

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Even in a climate of increased cooperation among regulatory authorities, jurisdictional conflict remains a prominent aspect of cross-border antitrust regulation. Much of this conflict is generated by private litigation - that is, lawsuits initiated under U.S. antitrust law by private attorneys general rather than by the government. This article examines two strands of jurisprudence relevant to the role of the private attorney general in cases with international aspects. First, it analyzes the cases, involving actions based on statutory violations of the antitrust laws, in which the extraterritorial reach of U.S. antitrust law has been delimited. It then turns to decisions …

"An Unqualified Human Good": E.P. Thompson And The Rule Of Law, Daniel H. Cole Jan 2001

"An Unqualified Human Good": E.P. Thompson And The Rule Of Law, Daniel H. Cole

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The late EP Thompson described himself as "a historian in the Marxist tradition." But when he embraced the Rule of Law (in Whigs and Hunters), many of his colleagues on the left ostracized him as an apostate. This essay argues that Thompson's critics have largely misunderstood what he meant by the Rule of Law. His was a minimal and historical conception, which merely sought to distinguish states whose rulers had unfettered discretion from states whose rulers were constrained by legal rules, whatever their source and contents. Also, in contrast to other radical theorists, Thompson recognized that law would be a …

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Gillian E. Metzger, Alfred C. Aman Jr., Charles F. Sabel, Lester M. Salamon, E.S. Savas and Elliot D. Sclar participate in panel discussions focusing on the question of how to secure government accountability in the context of the expansion of privatization in government? This panel discusses some of the changes we are seeing in government institutions and in the ways government operates. The panelists describe ways in which the move toward privatization and the expansion of the gray area between public and private is occurring, but also will talk about changes we may see as being particularly useful in dealing …

Conjugate Heat Transfer From A Two- Layer Substrate Model Of A Convectively Cooled Circuit Board, S. A. Harman, Kevin D. Cole Jan 2001

Conjugate Heat Transfer From A Two- Layer Substrate Model Of A Convectively Cooled Circuit Board, S. A. Harman, Kevin D. Cole

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

This note presents the results of a study of a simple model of an air-cooled electronic device mounted on a circuit board. The model includes a flush-mounted heater to represent the electronic device, a two-layer substrate to represent the circuit board, and a steady shear flow to represent the cooling fluid.

Ortega provides a good review of the literature and a comprehensive introduction to conjugate methods applied to electronic cooling, emphasizing simple shear flows and single-layer substrates to illustrate basic principles. Ortega also describes two-layer effects by including infrared thermographs of a convectively cooled glass/epoxy circuit board with copper traces, …

The Free Exercise Clause: How Redundant, And Why?, Daniel O. Conkle Jan 2001

The Free Exercise Clause: How Redundant, And Why?, Daniel O. Conkle

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article responds to Professor Mark Tushnet's article, "The Redundant Free Exercise Clause?" Although its analysis and specific conclusions are distinctive, the article reaches a general conclusion similar to Tushnet's - namely, that the contemporary Free Exercise Clause is largely redundant, in that it provides little protection that is not afforded independently by other First Amendment doctrines. The article first contends that the core principle of the contemporary Free Exercise Clause, the nondiscrimination requirement of Employment Division v. Smith, might be subsumed, perhaps entirely, within the free speech principle that disfavors content discrimination. To that extent, the Free Exercise Clause …
