All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Conidial suspensions of four isolates each of Bcauvcria bassiana and Melnrhizhtm anisopliae were evaluated in the laboratory for their virulence to adult Ootlicca mntabilis. All the isolates tested were pathogenic to the beetle, but to varying degrees. Three of them, B. bassiana CPD 3 and CPD10 and M. anisopliae CPD 6 were superior to all other isolates in terms of mortality induced on adult beetle, LT50 and LC50, with B. bnssiana CPD 3 having the lowest LC50 value. In feeding assayi consumption by beetles treated with B. bnssiana CPD 3 was significantly reduced within 2 days treatment (DAT) and the …

Stemborer Research In Zimbabwe: Prospects For The Establishment Of Cotesia Flavipes Cameron, P. Clhnwada, C. O. Omvvega, W. A. Overholt

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The stemborers Busseola fnsca (Fuller) and Chilo partellus (Svvinhoe) cause the highest economic damage to maize and sorghum in Zimbabwe. A number of studies on stemborer bioecology and management in Zimbabwe have been conducted, but most are still incomplete. The more important of these are studies on life history, incidence and distribution patterns, host plants, yield losses, chemical control, cultural control, host plant resistance, the use of sex pheromones, and biological control. These are discussed here in detail, and areas where further research is needed are pointed out. As part of an integrated strategy for managing stemborers in Zimbabwe, an …

Host Suitability Of Four Cereal Stem Borers (Lepidoptera: Crambidae, Noctuidae) For Different Geographic Populations Of Cotesia Sesamiae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) In Kenya, Moses B. Mochiah, Adele J. Ngi-Song, William A. Overholt, M. Botchey

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

This study focused on the suitability of four species of cereal stem borers for the development of five geographic populations of Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron). C. sesamiae, an indigenous larval parasitoid of gramineous stem borers, is widespread in Africa. Four stem borers, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), Chilo orichalcociliellus Strand (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Busseola fusca Fuller, and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were offered to C. sesamiae for oviposition. Parasitoid individuals originated from five locations in Kenya. Biological parameters such as developmental time, percentage parasitism, progeny production, mortality of immature parasitoids, and proportion of female progeny were compared across host species. The two populations …

Distribution And Species Composition Of Stemborers And Their Natural Enemies In Maize And Sorghum In Ethiopia, Emana Getu, W. A. Overholt, E. Kairu

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Surveys were conducted to determine the species composition of stemborers and their natural enemies in maize and sorghum in 1999 and 2000 in eastern, northern, southern and western Ethiopia. The six species of stemborers found attacking maize and sorghum were Cltilp partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Busseolafiisca Fuller, Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), S. nonagrioides botanephaga Tarns and Bowden (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Rhynchaenus niger (Horn) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae) and Pissodes dubious (Stroöm) (Coleoptera: Rhynchophoridae). Twenty species of primary parasitoids of eggs, larvae and pupae of Ch. partellus, B. fusca and S. calamistis were recorded. Other natural enemies, including predators, fungi and nematodes, were …

Natural Algorithms In Digital Filter Design, Stephen Penberthy Harris Jan 2001

Natural Algorithms In Digital Filter Design, Stephen Penberthy Harris

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Digital filters are an important part of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), which plays vital roles within the modern world, but their design is a complex task requiring a great deal of specialised knowledge. An analysis of this design process is presented, which identifies opportunities for the application of optimisation. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing are problem-independent and increasingly popular optimisation techniques. They do not require detailed prior knowledge of the nature of a problem, and are unaffected by a discontinuous search space, unlike traditional methods such as calculus and hill-climbing. Potential applications of these techniques to the filter …

Lucas Rosa V. Park West Bank And Trust Company, Katherine M. Franke Jan 2001

Lucas Rosa V. Park West Bank And Trust Company, Katherine M. Franke

Faculty Scholarship

In July of 1998 something rather mundane happened: Lucas Rosa walked into Park West Bank in Holyoke, Massachusetts and asked for a loan application. Since it was a warm summer day, and because she wanted to look credit-worthy, Rosa wore a blousey top over stockings. Suddenly, the mundane transformed into the exceptional: When asked for some identification, Rosa was told that no application would be forthcoming until and unless she went home, changed her clothes and returned attired in more traditionally masculine/male clothing. Rosa, a biological male who identifies herself as female was, it seems, denied a loan application on …

The Role And Reality Of Emotions In Law, Carol Sanger Jan 2001

The Role And Reality Of Emotions In Law, Carol Sanger

Faculty Scholarship

It is a great pleasure to participate in the celebration and exploration of Susan Bandes' The Passions of Law in this symposium on emotion and gender jurisprudence. It may be worth reminding today's law students that when Professor Bandes and I were classmates at the University of Michigan Law School in the mid-1970s, there were no such conferences. Jurisprudence existed, but the concept of gender had not yet emerged; we were still too busy defining feminism. Emotions were something we dutifully suppressed as we tried to assimilate into the legal profession.

This is not to say we were wholly unaffected …

Fear And Loathing Of Politics In The Legal Academy, William H. Simon Jan 2001

Fear And Loathing Of Politics In The Legal Academy, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

In a recent lament about Bush v. Gore, Bruce Ackerman feared that the patent groundlessness of the opinion would convince many of a proposition he attributed to critical legal studies: that law is simply a form of politics.

This remark reflects two tendencies prominent at the Yale Law School in recent years: first, a preoccupation with a now extinct and never very successful movement of left legal academics, and second, a tendency to conflate this movement with the legal conservatism of Jusice Scalia and his collaborators at the University of Chicago and the Rehnquist Court.

These tendencies ride high …

Divorce, Children's Welfare, And The Culture Wars, Elizabeth S. Scott Jan 2001

Divorce, Children's Welfare, And The Culture Wars, Elizabeth S. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

Are children harmed when their parents divorce? If so, should parents' freedom to end marriage be restricted? These questions have generated uncertainty and controversy in the decades since legal restraints on divorce have been lifted. During the 1970s and 80s, the traditional conviction that parents should stay together "for the sake of the children" was supplanted by a view that children are usually better off if their unhappy parents divorce. By this account, divorcing parents should simply try to accomplish the change in status with as little disruption to their children's lives as possible. This stance has been challenged sharply …

From The White Paper To The Proposal For A Council Regulation, Petros C. Mavroidis, Damien J. Neven Jan 2001

From The White Paper To The Proposal For A Council Regulation, Petros C. Mavroidis, Damien J. Neven

Faculty Scholarship

This Paper analyses how the network of enforcers envisaged in the Proposal for a Council Regulation on the implementation of the rules on competition laid down in Articles 81 and 82 of the EC Treaty (September 2000) would operate. We identify four issues. First, we observe that the Proposal (unlike the White Paper) includes safeguards to avoid a shift of competence in favour of national competition laws, which may be questionable in terms of subsidiarity. Second, we recognise that the accountability of antitrust authorities might vary across the members of the network, so that, for instance, some authorities may be …

What Happened To Property In Law And Economics?, Thomas W. Merrill, Henry E. Smith Jan 2001

What Happened To Property In Law And Economics?, Thomas W. Merrill, Henry E. Smith

Faculty Scholarship

Property has fallen out of fashion. Although people are as concerned as ever with acquiring and defending their material possessions, in the academic world there is little interest in understanding property. To some extent, this indifference reflects a more general skepticism about the value of conceptual analysis, as opposed to functional assessment of institutions. There is, however, a deeper reason for the indifference to property. It is a commonplace of academic discourse that property is simply a "bundle of rights," and that any distribution of rights and privileges among persons with respect to things can be dignified with the (almost …

The Renewal Of Insight: Exhibition Of Painting And Calligraphy, Chu Chen-Nan Jan 2001

The Renewal Of Insight: Exhibition Of Painting And Calligraphy, Chu Chen-Nan

Theses

The thesis, The Renewal of Insight: Exhibition of Painting and Calligraphy by Chu Chen-Nan, explores the intimate relationship between Chinese painting and calligraphy, emphasizing their shared origins and intertwined development. Chu Chen-Nan reflects on how Chinese calligraphy, with its expressive use of brush and ink, plays a crucial role in both artistic creation and the appreciation of visual arts. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese masters, Chu aligns his work with the idea that both painting and calligraphy emphasize qualities like structure, speed, and dignity, rather than solely focusing on representational accuracy.

Throughout the thesis, Chu explores the contrast and …

A Collaboration Between Two Doctors: A Study Of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, Larry D. Quiggins Jan 2001

A Collaboration Between Two Doctors: A Study Of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, Larry D. Quiggins

Theses

This thesis, titled A Collaboration Between Two Doctors: A Study of Neil Simon's The Good Doctor, explores the creative partnership between Neil Simon and Anton Chekhov through Simon's adaptation of Chekhov's short stories into a theatrical work. Written by Larry D. Quiggins in 2001 as part of an MFA in Theatre: Directing, the study examines the nuances of Simon's play, which combines humor and drama to bring Chekhov's stories to life for contemporary audiences.

The thesis begins by analyzing the nine Chekhov stories Simon adapted, including The Sneeze, The Governess, and Surgery, comparing Simon's modifications to the originals. It highlights …

Judicial Review Under Seqra: A Statistical Study, Michael B. Gerrard Jan 2001

Judicial Review Under Seqra: A Statistical Study, Michael B. Gerrard

Faculty Scholarship

Nearly 2000 judicial opinions were issued under the State Environmental Quality Review Act ("SEQRA") between its enactment in 1975 and the end of 2000. Almost 700 were issued from 1990 (when the author began undertaking an annual review of SEQRA cases for the New York Law Journal) through 2000. These numbers are large enough to serve as a basis for a statistically valid review of case outcomes.

This article is divided into five parts. Part I presents statistics on the SEQRA cases. Part II reviews the history of how the Court of Appeals has decided SEQRA cases. Part III …

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo Jan 2001

A Directorial View Of Tennessee Williams' Suddenly Last Summer, John Vullo

Theses

The nucleus of my thesis will be the direction of "Suddenly Last Summer'', by Tennessee Williams. This play will be performed under my direction for The St. Charles Theatre Company on October 27 and 28, November 3 and 4, 2000. "Suddenly Last Summer'' was first introduced to the public at the York Theatre, in New York City, on January 7, 1958.

It is my intent to present my own interpretation of this play and document my process of directing it in a community theatre environment. This becomes even more interesting to me because, although the St. Charles Theatre Company has …

The Correlation Between Family Adaptability Scores And Adolescent Incarceration, Katherine P. Richard Jan 2001

The Correlation Between Family Adaptability Scores And Adolescent Incarceration, Katherine P. Richard

Theses

Adolescent crimes continue to climb in number and level of violence despite efforts to curtail them. Little research has been done on the impact of family interaction styles on adolescent crime. This study attempts to confirm or disconfirm the hypothesis that adolescents who are incarcerated are more likely to score their families as having a rigid family interaction style based on the FACES III adaptability scale than adolescents who are not incarcerated. The family adaptability scores of approximately 50 adolescents in a midwestern lock down facility were compared to those of approximately 50 students selected from a midwestern church and …

Developing A Viable Intranet Site, Wendy C, Glidden Jan 2001

Developing A Viable Intranet Site, Wendy C, Glidden

Theses

This thesis will focus on establishing consistent guidelines in developing a successful corporate intranet website.

Office intranets are often neglected due to popularity of electronic commerce, and the company's investment in their public website. Standard instructions on how to develop a viable intranet site are not easily found and not likely taught.

With intranet development being a relatively new field, site expectations are very subjective. A site's perceived correctness largely depends on specific goals an organization has established for its site. There are generally high expectations and low budgets for intranets and if usability goals are not kept close at …

An Activity Book To Teach Primary Skills To Individuals And Families Through Fun Interventions, Toni D. Cole Jan 2001

An Activity Book To Teach Primary Skills To Individuals And Families Through Fun Interventions, Toni D. Cole

Theses

This thesis will focus on a new intervention approach that teaches individuals and families the skills needed to cope with life in appropriate ways.

Throughout history there have been many therapeutic theories and approaches that have clinically addressed the issues facing today's individuals and families. Play therapy and the family preservation model are the two theoretical approaches this thesis explores as key components in the design of a new intervention approach that meets the needs of individuals and families in their own environment.

This thesis proposes play therapy techniques that can be utilized by paraprofessionals, taking the teaching approach to …

Probability And Agents, Marco Valtorta, Michael N. Huhns Jan 2001

Probability And Agents, Marco Valtorta, Michael N. Huhns

Faculty Publications

To make sense of the information that agents gather from the Web, they need to reason about it. If the information is precise and correct, they can use engines such as theorem provers to reason logically and derive correct conclusions. Unfortunately, the information is often imprecise and uncertain, which means they will need a probabilistic approach. More than 150 years ago, George Boole presented the logic that bears his name. There is concern that classical logic is not sufficient to model how people do or should reason. Adopting a probabilistic approach in constructing software agents and multiagent systems simplifies some …

The Limits Of Pragmatism In American Foreign Policy: Unsolicited Advice To The Bush Administration On Relations With International Nongovernmental Organizations, Kenneth Anderson Jan 2001

The Limits Of Pragmatism In American Foreign Policy: Unsolicited Advice To The Bush Administration On Relations With International Nongovernmental Organizations, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The Bush Administration has tended to see international nongovernmental organizations in a pragmatic way, as functionally the international equivalent of domestic "volunteer" organizations. This article argues that the Bush Administration ought to see international nongovernmental organizations as organizations seeking to substitute so-called "international civil society," on the one hand, and public international organizations, on the other, for the authority of democratically sovereign states. Looking beyond the particular issues on which international NGOs press political agendas - human rights, environmentalism, etc. - the function of international NGOs is to delegitimize democratic sovereignty in favor of liberal internationalism. The article argues that …

Consonance: Creating Pots, Inviting Intimacy., Holly Winterhalter Adams

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis documents my journey as a graduate student in ceramics. Refining my skills at the potter’s wheel and finding a clay body and glaze palette that suit my personal aesthetic have been the central focus of my graduate studies. My work is informed primarily by pots made during China’s Sung Dynasty, as well as from forms and textures I observe in the natural world. I strive to make work that celebrates the tactile qualities of clay, creates a sense of consonance between the user and the pot, and facilitates a change from our everyday, habitual awareness into a reflective …

The format of the institute featured a scientific research experience designed to arm its participants with the skills needed to model their …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata Jan 2001

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Families Choosing Alternate Management Approaches., Christina Mary Lavorata

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects approximately two million American school children by making them distractible and impulsive, and by causing them to have a short attention span in both scholastic and social situations. These characteristics generally result in the students receiving poor marks in academic subjects, being reprimanded frequently, and being labeled as disruptive and difficult to control by both their parents and teachers. Pediatricians and psychiatrists most often prescribe psychostimulant medications to control the syndrome, and this is an effective treatment in sixty to seventy percent of cases. There are questions about the safety of long-term use of medication, …
