Hot Topic: Grief In The Workplace, Penny A. Hazelton

Articles

In our death-denying culture, grief is a personal thing not shared with others. I believe that the events of September 11 have made us recognize that we cannot leave grief at the doorstep of our workplaces. Many of us were at work when the stories broke that day. Whether our grief is caused by the acts of terrorism or has a more personal context, we cannot deny that the symptoms of grief create stresses that affect people and, therefore, the work in our libraries.

The Durable Power Of Attorney's Place In The Family Of Fiduciary Relationships, Karen E. Boxx Jan 2001

The Durable Power Of Attorney's Place In The Family Of Fiduciary Relationships, Karen E. Boxx

Articles

The durable power of attorney is a deceptively simple document that allows one person to handle the affairs of an incapacitated person without court supervision. It is merely an agency relationship, established by a written document, that continues during the principal's incapacity. The durable power of attorney has been in widespread use only for about twenty-five years. It is very easy to draft, and its use escapes most court proceedings or even much need for legal assistance.

The durable power of attorney has therefore kept a low profile until now, and any attention it is now receiving focuses primarily on …

Variation In Lipophorin Titres During Development In Solitarious And Gregarious Schistocerca Gregaria (Forskàl) (Orthoptera: Acrididae), D. O. Ogoyi, E. O. Osir

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The levels of lipophorin, the principal insect haemolymph lipoprotein, were estimated during the development of solitary and gregarious phases of Schistocerca gregaria using single radial immunodiffusion. In the gregarious phase, lipophorin titres ranged from 6.69 ±0.57 mg/ml in the 3rd nymphal instar to 14.42 ±2.04 mg/ml in mature adults. The titres in the solitary phase were 3.33 ± 0.59 mg/ml in the 3rd nymphal instar and 8.44 + 0.67 mg/ml in mature adults. Peak lipophorin titres occurred in mature adults (14.42 ±2.04 mg/ml) and 5th nymphal instar (8.75 ±0.25 mg/ml) for gregarious and solitary locusts, respectively. Gregarious locusts had significantly …

Toward Political Safeguards Of Self-Determination, Gregory P. Magarian Jan 2001

Toward Political Safeguards Of Self-Determination, Gregory P. Magarian

Scholarship@WashULaw

The theorists of the political safeguards of federalism (primarily Herbert Wechsler, Jesse Choper, and Larry Kramer) contend that various features of the American political system are sufficient to protect the values of federalism, obviating the need for federalist judicial review. These theorists have identified constitutional features of the system (i.e., equal representation in the Senate) and extolled subconstitutional features (notably the strength of the major political parties) as guarantors of state prerogatives against the federal government. They have not, however, developed a substantial account of the reasons why state prerogatives need or deserve protection and how those reasons bear on …

Graduate Research Papers

The Cultural Exchange Project was developed to be a collaborative activity that would allow students from a computer applications class in Waterloo, Iowa, to communicate through electronic mail (email), letters, and video with students from a Polish high school. The project was developed to provide cultural awareness, foster international relationships, improve communication skills, and promote technology usage. Students completed various activities to prepare for and enhance this project. These activities included: lessons in "netiquette"; reports on other cultures, and worksheets for sharing personal information. Each student was assigned a partner to communicate with individually through letters and email. The author …

Implementing Portfolio Assessment In Grade Four, Marilyn L. Browder Jan 2001

Implementing Portfolio Assessment In Grade Four, Marilyn L. Browder

Graduate Research Papers

Writing is a process. To assess this process, it needs to be described through qualitative techniques. One of these techniques is portfolio collection: Writing · . exhibits, collected over time, can facilitate students' self-reflections on their writing activity, interests, progress, and instructional needs. Such a collection is also valuable evidence for teachers in planning and maintaining their language programs and in reporting to caregivers.

This project involved the implementation of portfolio assessment in grade four by a first-year teacher. Through portfolio collection, the teacher as well as the students received much information that promoted writing and led to much interest …

Motivational Barriers : Technology Use By Minorities, Laura Dayton Jan 2001

Motivational Barriers : Technology Use By Minorities, Laura Dayton

Graduate Research Papers

This research paper reviews motivational factors that affect the use of technology by minorities. The technology gap is taking a toll on individuals, communities, and Society at large. Sixty percent of jobs require skills with technology. Students with limited or no access to computers are falling behind in developing skills that are needed in college and in the job market. This lack of infrastructure strikes some as particularly worrisome because it comes at a time when the federal government is forcing individuals and communities to become more self-sufficient. The research cited in this paper addresses the existence of a digital …

Meeting The Social And Emotional Needs Of Gifted And Talented Students, Angela Germaine Jan 2001

Meeting The Social And Emotional Needs Of Gifted And Talented Students, Angela Germaine

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this review ofliterature was to identify the major problems gifted and talented children may face in social and emotional adjustments and how to cope with these adjustments. It also sought to document strategies by which the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students may be met in the classroom and to delineate possible interventions that can improve their academic achievement. The review and analysis of literature revealed that two major social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students are self-discovery and an assurance that they are understood and accepted. Suggested interventions focused on the …

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: Activities To Enhance The Cognitive Development Of Infants And Toddlers, Candice York Jan 2001

Piaget's Sensorimotor Stage: Activities To Enhance The Cognitive Development Of Infants And Toddlers, Candice York

Graduate Research Papers

Sensory play is an effective way to encourage experimentation, even with children as young as infants and toddlers. Early childhood is the developmentally appropriate age for acquiring sensory awareness. One of the leading theorists on infant cognitive development is Jean Piaget. He referred to the first two years of life as the sensorimotor stage because at that age infants are primarily involved in explorations involving their movements and senses. Early childhood educators should analyze Piaget's work when designing a stimulating environment containing sensory-rich materials to enhance cognitive development consistent with developmental stages. This article addresses the six sub-stages of sensorimotor …

Borderline Personality Disorder : Instilling Hope May Reduce Suicide, Kerry R. Sullivan Jan 2001

Borderline Personality Disorder : Instilling Hope May Reduce Suicide, Kerry R. Sullivan

Graduate Research Papers

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a psychiatric diagnosis associated with extreme behaviors including repeated suicide attempts, emotional instability, distorted thinking, and difficulty controlling impulses (American Psychiatric Association, 1994). In addition, a history of childhood physical and sexual abuse is commonly associated with BPD (Murray, 1993). This history of abuse and rigid thinking are characteristics of this disorder associated with suicide attempts (Brown & Anderson, 1991). As a result, suicidal crises are common with BPD patients. Although traditional treatment methods decrease the number of suicidal attempts, they are moderately effective in decreasing suicidal ideation (McGlashan, 1986). Suicidality is characterized by a …

Alternate Curriculum In Reading For Grade 4, Carolyn M. Wiezorek Jan 2001

Alternate Curriculum In Reading For Grade 4, Carolyn M. Wiezorek

Graduate Research Papers

Academically gifted students are in every classroom. They have a right to be challenged all day, every day. Most curriculum is aimed at the average student, leaving gifted students bored and unchallenged. It is the school's responsibility to meet the needs of these academically gifted students. By differentiating content, process, product and learning environment, teachers can enrich, challenge and better meet the needs of all students. Our district is in the process of creating alternate units for our elementary language arts program. The sixth grade is complete and a team is working on the fifth grade units. Two other teachers …

A Case Of The Philips Curve In The Formation Of A Monetary Union: A Glimpse At High Inflation Countries Of The European Monetary Union, Yuet Wen Wan Jan 2001

A Case Of The Philips Curve In The Formation Of A Monetary Union: A Glimpse At High Inflation Countries Of The European Monetary Union, Yuet Wen Wan

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper examines how disinflation in high inflation economies affects unemployment levels. According to Keynesian macroeconomic theories, a decrease in inflation will cause an increase in unemployment in the short run. Due to high inflation over the years among countries like Italy and Ireland, their expected inflation rate is significantly high. As a result, when the government starts a process of disinflation though restrictive fiscal and monetary policies, economic activity declines, and significant short run increase in unemployment follows.
