Survivable Mobile Operating System, James Whittaker, Mohommad Samarah
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications
Although there is a large body of work on cryptographic techniques and algorithms that provide basic building blocks to solve specific security problems, relatively little work has been done in investigating security issues in mobile system contexts. Conventional security controls work well for static code, but break down with code mobility. In this paper, we investigate the need for end-to-end security in mobile and wireless operating systems. We study the implications of mobility - specifically, ways in which the operating system may facilitate communication security. We suggest a framework for designing security into mobile devices by building encryption into the …

A tunable, solid state laser device with both visible and infrared laser emission is developed with a trivalent ytterbium-doped yttrium calcium oxyborate crystal as the host crystal. The Yb:YCOB crystal generates an infrared fundamental light over a wide bandwidth, from approximately 980 nanometers (nm) to approximately 1100 nm. The bandwidth generated by the Yb:YCOB crystal is approximately 100 nm wide and supports the generation of pulsed infrared light or when self-frequency doubled provides a compact, efficient, source of tunable, visible, blue or green laser light in wavelengths of approximately 490 nm to approximately 550 nm.

New Techniques For The Design Of Diffractive Optical Devices For Optical Communications And Networking, Pojamarn Pojanasomboon, Okay K. Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Three new techniques are proposed for the design of optical devices for various applications in optical communications and networking. The first algorithm shows that the nonperiodic grating-assisted directional coupler design can achieve not only the complete power transfer but also superior performances over the conventional periodic grating-assisted directional coupler in nonsynchronous waveguides. The second method is the newly proposed angular spectrum and beam propagation methods using the continuous and discrete sine transforms. This alternative approach is useful especially when the boundary conditions need to be zeroes, for example at the dielectric-metal interfaces. Lastly, the ranked phased-array method @PAM) helps achieve …

Ua3/9/5 Partnerships For Progress: Linking Higher Education & Economic Development, Wku President's Office, Gary A. Ransdell
WKU Administration Documents
Speech delivered by WKU president Gary Ransdell at the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices. In response to Governor Patton's challenges to create Programs of Distinction and enhance the state's capacity for economic development, we, at Western, have created a series of applied science centers. These centers are directing faculty talent toward creating a relevant curriculum in the sciences, toward solving environmental and material problems which limit economic development, and toward creating practice-based experiences for students. A by-product of these centers is a strengthened core curriculum which brings the applied sciences into focus for all WKU students.
