Foreign Investment Companies Limited By Shares: The Latest Chinese Organization For Major International Ventures, Jim Jinpeng Zhang, Jung Y. Lowe Jan 2001

Foreign Investment Companies Limited By Shares: The Latest Chinese Organization For Major International Ventures, Jim Jinpeng Zhang, Jung Y. Lowe

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Foreign Investment Companies Limited By Shares ("FICLBS") is one of the most important recent innovations in the People's Republic of China's ("China") foreign-invested enterprises law. Since January 10, 1995, China has authorized use of the FICLBS and, for the first time, it more closely resembles major corporate organizations used by international foreign investors.! So far over eighteen FICLBS have been approved for operation through 1999, with combined actual foreign investment of USD 1.2 billion.2 FICLBS has the potential to be the ideal organization for major international investment in China after it joins the World Trade Organization. The FICLBS can issue …

Multinational Regulatory Competition And Single-Stock Futures , Frank Partnoy Jan 2001

Multinational Regulatory Competition And Single-Stock Futures , Frank Partnoy

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

Whereas these first two forms of regulatory competition are well documented and covered in the legal literature, the third form - which I call "multinational regulatory competition" - is newer and more difficult to characterize. Accordingly, any claims about future regulatory competition in this form necessarily are speculative. By "multinational regulatory competition," I mean competition occurring when a group of regulators from more than one sovereign forms a partnership as a multinational regulator and then seeks to compete with other groups of regulators, also formed from more than one sovereign. There is some recent empirical evidence that regulatory trends in …

The Capacity Of The Electronics Industry For Closing The Lifecycle Look: Assessing The Infrastucture For The Recovery And Recycling Of Electronics In The Unites States, Patricia Donohue Jan 2001

The Capacity Of The Electronics Industry For Closing The Lifecycle Look: Assessing The Infrastucture For The Recovery And Recycling Of Electronics In The Unites States, Patricia Donohue

Theses

This work examined why the electronics industry, specifically producers of commercial and consumer equipment, does not complete the product lifecycle by recapturing valuable materials from products when the products reach the end of their useful life. The electronics industry, it seems, is not capable of fully recovering and recycling its products. It lacks the infrastructure, or the underlying foundation, to enable the industry to take back its products and recycle or reuse the components that make up those products. This research identified and examined the various infrastructure deficiencies, including technical and regulatory factors, causing the recovery and recycling of electronic …

A Guideline For Initiating An Environmental Management System In Academia, David Turkow Jan 2001

A Guideline For Initiating An Environmental Management System In Academia, David Turkow

Theses

Managing environmental concerns in an academic environment poses unique challenges to colleges and universities. Many college EHS professionals face an uphill battle to promote environmental improvement in an organized, systematic, and sustainable fashion - an Environmental Management System (EMS) is designed to do just that. Some inherent difficulties encountered in an academic setting include 1) lack of management support and 2) the perception that colleges do not have major environmental compliance issues (contributing factor to #1). By identifying issues unique to academia and differences in perception between EHS professionals and academic senior management, chances for successfully initiating/implementing an EMS are …

Utilizing Re-Engineering Of Competitive Packages To Stimulate Innovative Packaging Development, Jeffrey Gibb Jan 2001

Utilizing Re-Engineering Of Competitive Packages To Stimulate Innovative Packaging Development, Jeffrey Gibb

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how the tool of re-engineering can successfully be used to dissect competitive packaging and, in turn, stimulate new, innovative packaging developments. The organizational challenges and hurdles in achieving innovation have changed in recent years. Mergers and acquisitions have resulted in the creation of mega-corporations. The result has been a change in business philosophy from generalization to specialization for maximum profitability. The challenge of specialization is that it stifles creativity, and this includes the development of innovative packaging. One of the ways the packaging engineer can overcome these challenges and drive innovation is …

An Evaluation Of The Influence Of Vibrations Received In The Distribution Environment To The Remaining Eddy Current Probe Lifetime, Edo Picek Jan 2001

An Evaluation Of The Influence Of Vibrations Received In The Distribution Environment To The Remaining Eddy Current Probe Lifetime, Edo Picek

Theses

Eddy Current probes are used for the testing of steam generator tubing integrity in nuclear power plants. Their use environment is far more severe than the distribution environment, which includes truck and airplane delivery of small parcels. As each probe has soldered connections susceptible to damage this study was undertaken to investigate a possible influence of vibrations due to transport to a probe lifetime. A sweep vibration test was performed on a product with no packaging. It proved that the probe was able to vibrate in different ways unless restricted by the package. With the packaging solution defined in more …

Optimised Manufacture, Packing And Distribution Of E-Fluted Corrugated Detergent Containers, Enis Kancelir Jan 2001

Optimised Manufacture, Packing And Distribution Of E-Fluted Corrugated Detergent Containers, Enis Kancelir

Theses

E-fluted corrugated containers are widely used on the European markets and other markets world-wide. The production of this type of containers is therefore very important in the area of detergent packing and distribution. It is very important to improve and develop such forms of packing. This paper shows the method of packing which is as effective as the one we have used by now, but which involves significant reduction in the costs of operation. Additional rationalisation has been also defined by adequate ASTM testing methods.

The New Social Discipline : A Critical Analysis Of Federal Drug-Free Workplace Legislation And Employee Drug Testing, Matthew T. Lammers Jan 2001

The New Social Discipline : A Critical Analysis Of Federal Drug-Free Workplace Legislation And Employee Drug Testing, Matthew T. Lammers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this research I contend that the arguments for drug-free workplaces are framed within a narrative of science that lends authenticity to the recurring themes that drug testing promotes the health, safety, and productivity of the American workforce. The sense of authenticity effectively delimits the discourse of drug testing and presents the complexities of drug abuse in binary oppositions that contribute to normalizing the behavior of all individuals, not just those who abuse drugs. I suggest that the process of normalization reproduces the delimitation of discourse and provides justifications for introducing drug testing into areas of society beyond the walls …

Testing The Design Of A Library Information Gateway, W. Bede Mitchell, Laura B. Davidson, Virginia C. Branch, Lynne Lysiak

University Libraries: Faculty Publications

In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.

OES Faculty Publications

A multidisciplinary research team has conducted a field-scale bacterial transport study within an uncontaminated sandy Pleistocene aquifer near Oyster, Virginia. The overall goal of the project was to evaluate the importance of heterogeneities in controlling the field-scale transport of bacteria that are injected into the ground for remediation purposes. Geochemical, hydrological, geological, and geophysical data were collected to characterize the site prior to conducting chemical and bacterial injection experiments. In this paper we focus on results of a hydrogeological characterization effort using geophysical data collected across a range of spatial scales. The geophysical data employed include surface ground-penetrating radar, radar …

Simulation Methodologies For Political Scientists, Kenneth Benoit Jan 2001

Simulation Methodologies For Political Scientists, Kenneth Benoit

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this brief article I identify and characterize the variety of simulation methodologies relevant to political science research. Having identified them, I then recount a light-hearted tale of one successful application of a computer simulation to a real world problem of enormous significance. Extending the discussion to other examples, I discuss some of the main issues and benefits in simulation models for political science. Finally, I identify some software tools and additional resources for those who would like to learn more about using simulation methods for their own work.

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2001

Education And Citizenship In Diverse Societies, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The question of the state's role in the control of sponsorship of education is addressed in the light of liberal political principles designed to keep peace and enforce toleration in culturally diverse societies. Some contemporary, self-described liberal philosophers argue for a much more substantial educational role for the state than liberal principles will really allow. Brian Barry's argument for that role assumes that the state can prescribe answers to controversial questions regarding the truth and the good life in which a truly liberal state would take no interest. Stephen Macedo is more accommodating to religious diversity than Barry, but his …

The Regional Public-Private Civic Infrastructure Of Hampton Roads And Its Impact On The Implementation Of Economic Development Initiatives, James Andrew Probsdorfer

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study analyzes the effectiveness of a network of five regional organizations to promote economic development in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Using a case study methodology, data collected from organizational documents, media reports, and personal interviews was categorized and triangulated to determine how many regional economic proposals were implemented from 1990 to 2000. This analysis created a regional timeline from which was produced a regional inventory of economic proposals. This study concluded that the regional economic development organizations in Hampton Roads have a fragmented network and their output has been influenced by regional factors.

Specifically out of a total of nineteen …
