Modeling Information Content Using Observable Behavior, Douglas W. Oard, Jinmook Kim Jan 2001

Modeling Information Content Using Observable Behavior, Douglas W. Oard, Jinmook Kim

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a framework for modeling the content of information objects such as documents and video programs based on observation of how users interact with those objects in the course of information seeking and use. Four categories of potentially observable user behaviors are identified: examination, retention, reference, and annotation. The framework draws together techniques from the information filtering, Web searching and citation indexing, and identifies the natural scope (portion of an object, complete object, or collection of objects) at which each behavior can be observed. The process of using observations as a basis for identifying information that may be …

Organizational Attractiveness For Prospective Applicants: A Person-Organisation Fit Perspective, Filip Lievens, Christoph Decaesteker, Pol Coetsier, Jo Geimaert

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigates which of four objective organisational characteristics determine the attractiveness of organisations for prospective applicants and the degree to which the Big Five personality factors moderate the effects of some of these organisational attributes. To this end, 359 final-year students (engineering and business majors, 71% men, mean age = 22.4 years) read short descriptions of organisations. These descriptions varied on four organisational characteristics (i.e. organisation size, level of internationalisation, pay mix, and level of centralisation). The students had to indicate their attraction to the organisation. Additionally, they provided self-ratings on a personality inventory. The results show that prospective …

Mathematization And Modern Science, Calvin Jongsma Jan 2001

Mathematization And Modern Science, Calvin Jongsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The discipline of mathematics has not been spared the sweeping critique of postmodernism. Is mathematical theory true for all time, or are mathematical constructs in fact fallible? This fascinating book examines the tensions that have arisen between modern and postmodern views of mathematics, explores alternative theories of mathematical truth, explains why the issues are important, and shows how a Christian perspective makes a difference.

This chapter continues the process of tracing Western mathematization.

Risk Based Urban Watershed Management Under Conflicting Objectives, Vladimir Novotny, David E. Clark, Robert J. Griffin, Douglas Booth Jan 2001

Risk Based Urban Watershed Management Under Conflicting Objectives, Vladimir Novotny, David E. Clark, Robert J. Griffin, Douglas Booth

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Ecological impairment and flooding caused by urbanization can be expressed numerically by calculating the risks throughout the watershed (floodplain) and along the main stems of the streams. The risks can be evaluated in terms of the present and/or future. This article describes the methodologies for ascertaining the risks in the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment. The objectives of urban flood controls and ecological preservation/restoration of urban waters are often conflicting and, in the past, the sole emphasis on flood control led to destruction of habitat and deterioration of water quality. An optimal solution to these two problems may be achieved …

Company Registration In Its Historical Context: Evolution Not Revolution, Miriam R. Albert Jan 2001

Company Registration In Its Historical Context: Evolution Not Revolution, Miriam R. Albert

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The piece examines proposals for changing the current system for registering securities under the Securities Act of 1933. Under the current transaction-based system, issuers must register each non-exempt public offering of securities. Despite the SEC's rule-making power, regulatory revision, at least with respect to the implementation of any major changes to the existing federal securities regulation landscape, has traditionally followed a somewhat cyclical model.

First, there is discussion in the academic and professional literature, commenting on, criticizing or proposing changes to some facet of the existing regulatory system (“public debate”); then, either overlapping with or following this public debate, the …

The Muddy Boundaries Between Res Judicata And Full Faith And Credit, Stewart E. Sterk Jan 2001

The Muddy Boundaries Between Res Judicata And Full Faith And Credit, Stewart E. Sterk

Articles

The Full Faith and Credit Clause of the U.S. Constitution requires states to respect and recognize the legal decisions of other states, but its application is limited when it comes to judgments that attempt to control future behavior or infringe on a state's sovereignty. The article argues that while the clause ensures finality and uniformity, it does not obligate states to enforce sister-state injunctions or orders that dictate conduct beyond their borders. This distinction is particularly evident in cases involving family law, where states retain flexibility to modify or ignore prior judgments based on evolving circumstances, such as the best …

Lawyers' Ethics And Fiduciary Obligation In The Brave New World Of Aggregative Litigation, Lester Brickman

Articles

Over the past several decades and at a quickening pace, we have seen the rise of the mass tort phenomenon. The term mass tort refers to an allegation of injury by large numbers of persons due to a calamity or exposure to defectively produced foods, drugs, products implanted in the body, or improperly designed or constructed vehicles, other products, materials or structures, which is sought to be redressed by combining (aggregating) large numbers of claims sharing like issues of fact and law into a litigation against one or more defendants using such structural aggregative methods as class actions, consolidations, and …

Process-Property-Fabric Architecture Relationships In Fibre-Reinforced Composites, Neil Robert Lewarne Pearce Jan 2001

Process-Property-Fabric Architecture Relationships In Fibre-Reinforced Composites, Neil Robert Lewarne Pearce

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

The use of fibre-reinforced polymer matrix composite materials is growing at a faster rate than GDP in many countries. An improved understanding of their processing and mechanical behaviour would extend the potential applications of these materials. For unidirectional composites, it is predicted that localised absence of fibres is related to longitudinal compression failure. The use of woven reinforcements permits more effective manufacture than for unidirectional fibres. It has been demonstrated experimentally that compression strengths of woven composites are reduced when fibres are clustered. Summerscales predicted that clustering of fibres would increase the permeability of the reinforcement and hence expedite the …

The Application Of Real-Time Software In The Implementation Of Low-Cost Satellite Return Links, James Tom Slader Jan 2001

The Application Of Real-Time Software In The Implementation Of Low-Cost Satellite Return Links, James Tom Slader

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) have evolved to a level where it is feasible for digital modems with relatively low data rates to be implemented entirely with software algorithms. With current technology it is still necessary for analogue processing between the RF input and a low frequency IF but, as DSP technology advances, it will become possible to shift the interface between analogue and digital domains ever closer towards the RF input. The software radio concept is a long-term goal which aims to realise software-based digital modems which are completely flexible in terms of operating frequency, bandwidth, modulation format and source …

Part 3: The Decline Of Coal And The Rise Of Deep-Draft Ships: The Future Of The Port, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Since the early 1990s, the Port has stagnated in terms of the volume of the cargo it handles. This is due almost solely to a decline in bulk cargo (mostly coal). Nonetheless, the Port continues to provide major a economic impetus to the region because it has become much more efficient and competitive over the past decade.

Future Marine Zooplankton Research- A Perspective, Marine Zooplankton Colloquim 2, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

During the Second Marine Zooplankton Colloquium (MZC2) 3 issues were added to those developed 11 yr ago during the First Marine Zooplankton Colloquium (MZC1). First, we focused on hot spots, i.e., locations where zooplankton occur in higher than regular abundance and/or operate at higher rates. We should be able to determine the processes leading to such aggregations and rates, and quantify their persistence. Second, information on the level of individual species, even of highly abundant ones, is limited. Concerted efforts should be undertaken with highly abundant to dominant species or genera (e.g., Oithona spp., Calanus spp., Oikopleura spp., Euphausia superba …

The academic research vessel fleet in the United States is embarking on a great experiment. By 2004 we will know if SWATH vessels such as the Mlo Moana and the possible built Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution coastal SWATH have such great advantages that all future vessels will be of SWATH design. Or, we will find that the two hull forms have distinct niches and the fleet will evolve with a strategic mix. Regardless of the Mure hull form research vessels will grow in size to accommodate advanced technology and the people to run and maintain it. The research vessel will …

A New Compensating Element For A Femtosecond Photoelectron Gun, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2001

A New Compensating Element For A Femtosecond Photoelectron Gun, Bao-Liang Qian, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Design and analysis of a new compensating element for improving the electron pulse front and compressing the pulse duration in a femtosecond photoelectron gun are described. The compensating element is a small metallic cylindrical cavity in which an external voltage is applied in such a way that a special electric field forms and interacts with the electron pulse. This electric field reduces the distances between the faster and slower electrons inside the cavity and efficiently compensates for electron pulse broadening caused by the photoelectron energy spread and space charge effects. Poisson's equation and the equation of motion are solved to …

Will A Lawsuit A Day Keep The Cyberdocs Away? Modern Theories Of Medical Malpractice As Applied To Cybermedicine, Ruth Ellen Smalley Jan 2001

Will A Lawsuit A Day Keep The Cyberdocs Away? Modern Theories Of Medical Malpractice As Applied To Cybermedicine, Ruth Ellen Smalley

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Rivaled only by lawyers, those who earn their livelihood by practicing medicine are viewed by many as America's Public Enemy No. 1. This perception is due to the rising cost of medicine, the over-scheduling of patients, and the poor bedside manner that many people associate with a trip to the doctor's office. However, the advent of the Internet and its proliferation into schools, offices, and homes has placed medical opinions only a mouse click away. Websites, such as cyberdocs.com, allow patients to type in a description of their ailments and receive diagnoses and treatment advice from an on-line medical professional …

My Reputation Always Had More Fun Than Me: The Failure Of Ebay's Feedback Model To Effectively Prevent Online Auction Fraud, Mary M. Calkins Jan 2001

My Reputation Always Had More Fun Than Me: The Failure Of Ebay's Feedback Model To Effectively Prevent Online Auction Fraud, Mary M. Calkins

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Online auctions for goods are currently a popular and lucrative form of e-commerce, but present special problems of trust and fraud prevention, because most deals involve buyers and sellers who do not know each other and are separated by distance. Online auctions for goods have been largely unregulated by formal laws. For that reason, trust-building and fraud prevention have primarily been accomplished through creative private regulatory models implemented by the auction houses themselves. This Comment examines one popular model, a registration and feedback system pioneered by the leading online auction company, eBay. Under this system, a user builds a public …

Post Markman: Claim Construction Trends In The Federal Circuit, Daniel J. Melman Jan 2001

Post Markman: Claim Construction Trends In The Federal Circuit, Daniel J. Melman

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

The strength of a patent as a legal instrument to protect an invention rests primarily on the drafting quality of its claims. The claims of a patent recite the invention "that is deemed by [the] applicant to be operable and patentable." Furthermore, the claims define the legal metes and bounds of an invention so that a patent owner can prevent others from making, using, and selling a patented product in the United States for a period of twenty years from the filing of the patent application. The Supreme Court has long held that a patent's claim, more so than any …

Is The Whole Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts? The Applicability Of The Fair Use Doctrine To The New Breed Of Instant Messaging Software, Haydn J. Richards Jr.

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Imagine: you are preparing your fifteen-year high school reunion. When you were in high school, two rival bands played at dances. Everyone at school knew the bands and most students enjoyed the music. Like most music groups, neither band obtained a recording contract with a record label. You are not aware that during a garage practice session, the bands' members recorded some of their songs. Of these songs, only a few scratchy recordings remain. You decide that you are going to search the Internet to see whether you can find any copies of the songs that would enthuse and delight …

Development Of A Procedure To Identify Aggregates For Bituminous Surfaces In Indiana, Terry R. West, Kyu H. Cho Jan 2001

Development Of A Procedure To Identify Aggregates For Bituminous Surfaces In Indiana, Terry R. West, Kyu H. Cho

JTRP Technical Reports

Adequate friction resistance is needed to prevent pavement slipperiness allowing vehicles to stop in a reasonable distance. For stone mastic asphalt surfaces, friction resistance is mainly a function of the interaction between the aggregates exposed at the road surface and vehicle tires. Aggregate performance is reduced with time by wear and polishing as a consequence of vehicular traffic. In this research a method to investigate performance based on physical, chemical and petrographic factors has been evaluated. The objective was to develop a laboratory method to test Indiana dolomite, limestone, sandstone, and gravel aggregates to predict friction resistance in the field …

Development Of Improved Pavement Performance Prediction Models For The Indiana Pavement Management System, Sedat Gulen, Karen Zhu, John Weaver, Jie Shan, William F. Flora Jan 2001

Development Of Improved Pavement Performance Prediction Models For The Indiana Pavement Management System, Sedat Gulen, Karen Zhu, John Weaver, Jie Shan, William F. Flora

JTRP Technical Reports

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is increasingly committed to the Pavement Management System. For this reason, updated simple pavement performance prediction models with the least number of explanatory (independent) variables are required to predict the performance of various pavement types for future planning of rehabilitation or replacement. In Indiana, the two main pavement types are jointed concrete pavement (JCP) and bituminous pavement (BIT). 1999 and 2000 year data were used to develop regression models for different pavement types for the Interstate and Non- Interstate Roads systems. The International Roughness Index (IRI), in inches per mile, was mainly used for …

Development And Application Of Linear Scheduling Techniques To Highway Construction Projects, D. J. Harmelink, Rene Antonio Yamin Jan 2001

Development And Application Of Linear Scheduling Techniques To Highway Construction Projects, D. J. Harmelink, Rene Antonio Yamin

JTRP Technical Reports

Crucial to the successful outcome of major highway construction and reconstruction projects today is the ability to accurately plan, predict and control the construction process. Evermore sensitive to budget control, schedule control, resource allocation and impacts on the motoring public, highway constructors today require sophisticated project management tools to achieve project goals. One of the tools recently being used across the country is project scheduling. The use of scheduling techniques on highway projects has grown out of the successful application of these methods to building construction for the past 20 to 30 years. Unfortunately, the effective application of traditional scheduling …
