A Study Of The Impact Of The Tenants Purchase Scheme (Tps) On The Hong Kong Housing Markets, Fai Yip Yeung Nov 2001

A Study Of The Impact Of The Tenants Purchase Scheme (Tps) On The Hong Kong Housing Markets, Fai Yip Yeung

Lingnan Theses

The Tenants Purchase Scheme (TPS), the public housing privatization programme, which commenced in the first quarter of 1998 in Hong Kong, has received much attention from urban economists. However, few empirical studies have been carried out to examine its impact on the housing market and the entire economy. This study uses time-series regression analysis to distinguish the effect of the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) from that of the TPS on the transaction volume and the real transaction value in the second-hand HOS market (focusing on the HOS free market), the secondary property market, and the overall property market. In addition, …

Hitting The Line Hard : The Height Of The Social Hygiene Movement In Oregon, 1911-1918, Jodi Hammond Nov 2001

Hitting The Line Hard : The Height Of The Social Hygiene Movement In Oregon, 1911-1918, Jodi Hammond

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis provides the history of a grass-roots educational campaign to educate the public of the dangers of venereal disease undertaken by reformers within the Oregon Social Hygiene Society. It recounts the forces which caused prominent citizens of the state to take up the hygiene society's cause and bring the organization to national prominence for state-wide educational work. The thesis considers the inherent tensions between purity and sanitary-based reformers within the hygiene movement. It demonstrates how reformers were able to put aside conflicting views for a time and unite to pursue educational goals. The thesis provides a blueprint of a …

The Use Of 'Most-Favored-Nation' Clauses In Settlement Of Litigation, Kathryn E. Spier Nov 2001

The Use Of 'Most-Favored-Nation' Clauses In Settlement Of Litigation, Kathryn E. Spier

Law and Economics Papers

Many settlement agreements in lawsuits involving either multiple plaintiffs or multiple defendants include so-called "most-favored-nation" clauses. If a defendant facing multiple claims, for example, settles with some plaintiffs early and settles with additional plaintiffs later for a greater amount, then the early settlers will receive the more favorable terms as well. These MFN provisions have been prominent in the recent MP3.com case, as well as tobacco litigation, class actions, and many antitrust lawsuits. This paper considers a defendant who is facing a large group of heterogeneous plaintiffs. Each plaintiff has private information about the (expected) award that he or she …

A Generalized Framework For Reasoning With Angular Directions, Mitra Debasis Nov 2001

A Generalized Framework For Reasoning With Angular Directions, Mitra Debasis

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

This extended abstract presents a new scheme for qualitative reasoning with directions between points in 2D-space, called Star-ontology(6). The current results of our study on the complexity issues for reasoning with incomplete/disjunctive information using this new ontology has been outlined here. We have also proposed a generalized framework Star-ontology(a) for an integer a, that could be specialized to many ontologies including some of the known ones like the 2D-Cradinal ontology for a=4, and the currently studied one for a=6. This generalization also points to an interesting direction for investigation in the field of spatio-temporal reasoning.
