Poetry And The State: The Politics Of Nabat Tradition In Kuwait, Abdullah Alajmi

This thesis analyzes the relationship between the practice of an old tribal Bedouin oral tradition (Nabat poetry) and the politics of the nation-state in Kuwait. The historical context of this tradition, its development within modern state boundaries, and its current role in the politico-cultural exchange are all examined. Anthropological, ethnohistorical, and Arabic local printed resources are used. In addition, Bedouin oral traditions and personal observation are employed for final analysis. Unlike the pre-state Nabat, the current practice is institutionalized to become an essential aspect of state modern processes. Aerobic Biodegradation Of Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether By Aquifer Bacteria From Leaking Underground Storage Tank Sites, S. R. Kane, H. R. Beller, T. C. Legler, C. J. Koester, Holly C. Pinkart, R. U. Halden, A. M. Happel

The potential for aerobic methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degradation was investigated with microcosms containing aquifer sediment and groundwater from four MTBE-contaminated sites characterized by oxygen-limited in situ conditions. MTBE depletion was observed for sediments from two sites (e.g., 4.5 mg/liter degraded in 15 days after a 4-day lag period), whereas no consumption of MTBE was observed for sediments from the other sites after 75 days. For sediments in which MTBE was consumed, 43 to 54% of added [U-¹⁴C]MTBE was mineralized to¹⁴CO₂. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of these sediments indicated the enrichment of species closely …

The present paper assesses not only the efforts of the current administration in poverty reduction, but also the · role played by past administrations so as to identify a more pragmatic approach to poverty reduction in Nigeria The next section looks at a poverty profile in Nigeria with a view to identifying ·some of the salient issues. Section IIL examines the various approaches to poverty reduction. Section IV appraises poverty reduction in Nigeria. Section V, offers some suggestions on poverty reduction in Nigeria.

This article considers the formation and representation of Washington, D.C.'s Dominican community in the Anacostia Museum's 1994 -1995 exhibit, Black Mosaic: Community, Race and Ethnicity Among Black Immigrants in D.C. The exhibit successfully pointed to the extensive historical presence of African Diaspora peoples in Latin America and explored the development of subsequent Diaspora from those communities into Washington, D.C. The case of Dominican immigrants to D.C., however, illustrates the continued privileging of a U.S.- or Anglo-centric ideation of African-American history and identity. I argue that a more accurate and politically useful formulation would call for an understanding that the African …

The association of dysmorphic features and failure of one or more bone marrow cell lines is well known. Examples are Fanconi9s anemia and Diamond-Blackfan anemia. This report describes 3 similarly affected children from consanguineous parents, all showing low birth weight, severe growth retardation, distinct facial features, microcephaly, mental retardation and onset of severe pancytopenia in infancy without increased chromosomal breakage. We conclude that these cases represent a new familial autosomal recessive bone marrow failure syndrome.

This Essay begins by analyzing the way American legal theory has failed to adequately address the challenges and insights of grammatology, the philological critique of the language of law initiated with Jacques Derrida's work Of Grammatology. Professor Goodrich traces the form that this failed confrontation took and then outlines how this philological critique ought to inform a study of law. Importantly for Professor Goodrich, the grammatological approach to law provides ways of analyzing not just the written legal text, but also the effects of new media technologies on the law more broadly. This article posits a framework that shows how market-based assets and capabilities are leveraged via market-facing or core business processes to deliver superior customer value and competitive advantages. These value elements and competitive advantages can be leveraged to result in superior corporate performance and shareholder value and reinvested to nurture market-based assets and capabilities in the future. The article also illustrates how resource-based view (RBV) and marketing considerations in the context of generating and sustaining customer value can refine and extend each other's traditional frames of analysis. The description of Nigeria as a paradox by the World Bank (1996) bas continued to be confirmed by events and official statistics in the country. The paradox is - that the poverty level in Nigeria contradicts the country's immense wealth. Among other things, the country is enormously endowed with human, agricultural, petroleum, gas, and large untapped solid mineral resources. Particularly worrisome is that the country earned over USS300 billion from one resource - petroleum - during the last three decades of the twentieth century. Houghing The Hough: Peak Collection For Detection Of Corners, Junctions And Line Intersections, William A. Barrett, Kevin D. Petersen

We exploit the Accumulator Array of the Hough Transform by finding collections of (2 or more) peaks through which a given sinusoid will pass. Such sinusoids identify points in the original image where lines intersect. Peak collection (or line aggregation) is performed by making a second pass through the edge map, but instead of laying points down in the accumulator array (as with the original Hough Transform), we compute the line integral over each sinusoid that corresponds to the current edge point. Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) and near-infrared light therapy on wound healing.

Background Data: Light-emitting diodes (LED), originally developed for NASA plant growth experiments in space show promise for delivering light deep into tissues of the body to promote wound healing and human tissue growth. In this paper, we review and present our new data of LED treatment on cells grown in culture, on ischemic and diabetic wounds in rat models, and on acute and chronic wounds in humans.

Nebraska has five main pine forest regions dominated by Pinus ponderosa Laws, with other small naturally forested areas scattered in pockets across the state (Kaul & Rolfsmeier 1993). Three of these main forest areas occur naturally: the Pine Ridge in northwestern Nebraska, the Wildcat Hills south of the city of Scottsbluff, and the Niobrara River Valley in the north-central portion of the state. These three natural coniferous forest communities are similar in having gentle to steep slopes, well-drained sandy soils, and sandstone outcrops (Steinauer & Rolfsmeier 2000). This qualitative dissertation study used grounded theory methodology modified to accept received theory to examine organizational and professional socialization as experienced by a group of ten first-year teachers in grades four through six. Stage model theory and surprise and sense-making theory supplied the study's conceptual framework. The first-year teachers were interviewed three times during the 2000–2001 school year to identify elements of their organizational socialization experience.

Provides an assessment of characteristics of nonresident winter visitors to Montana during the 2000-2001 winter season. This report describes the winter visitor in terms of demographics, trip characteristics, travel behavior and expenditures in the state, as well as provides an updated estimate of economic impact of winter travelers in the state. The report also serves to update information gathered during ITRR's previous nonresident winter study in 1997-1998.

Hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) are major sources of morbidity and mortality. The broad goal of this dissertation research is to gain a better understanding of the cascade of injury events that follow hypoxic-ischemic and traumatic injury and how they may contribute to the cell death. To accomplish this goal, one of the major secondary events common to both traumatic and hypoxic-ischemic injury was investigated: the prolonged hydrolysis of membrane phospholipid with the release of massive quantities of free (non-esterified) fatty acid (FFA).
