A Database For Dismantling Of Obsolete Vessels., Pooja Sibal Jan 2001

A Database For Dismantling Of Obsolete Vessels., Pooja Sibal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This project developed a software tool and associated databases to show information on ships available for cutting, the ship name, type, year built, UIC number, ship status, light ship displacement, length, beam, changes made, dead weight, number of propellers, propulsion type, dismantling site and vessel site of the ship(s). Information on the previously dismantled vessels is also kept. The Database for Dismantling of Obsolete VEssels (DOVE) also provides total towing cost for a selected ship based on the total tow distance, the light ship displacement of the ship, the unit tow cost/mile-ton and the tow preparation cost. A cutting technology …

Constitutional Migration And The Bounds Of Comparative Analysis, Michel Rosenfeld Jan 2001

Constitutional Migration And The Bounds Of Comparative Analysis, Michel Rosenfeld

Articles

The article explores the complexities and challenges of comparative constitutional analysis, highlighting how constitutional ideas and norms migrate across nations. It emphasizes that while such analysis is necessary and can provide valuable insights, it must be approached with caution, considering the unique cultural, historical, and political contexts of each country. The author argues that foreign constitutional materials can influence domestic law both directly and indirectly, but their application must account for contextual differences to avoid misinterpretation or misuse.

Operational Managers Handbook To Information Technology Outsourcing, Chester Johnson Jan 2001

Operational Managers Handbook To Information Technology Outsourcing, Chester Johnson

Theses

The academic, consulting, and business community is inundated with books, articles, web sites, and consulting services devoted to IT Outsourcing. As the technology advances and the business community gains practical experience in the area, outsourcing options require constant updating. This handbook provides the sequence of business process steps along with numerous guidelines, checklists, and detailed descriptions for developing a successful outsourcing contract. What is unique about the handbook is that it synthesizes the organizational, cultural, and political aspects of the enterprise that form the underpinnings for the development of a successful outsourcing function within the enterprise. The handbook then delves …

Measurement Of Virtual Compton Scattering Below Pion Threshold At Invariant Four-Momentum Transfer Squared Q²=1.(Gev/C)², Christopher Jutier

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Experimental Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) off the proton is a new tool to access the Generalized Polarizabilities (GPs) of the proton that parameterize the response of the proton to an electromagnetic perturbation. The Q2 dependence of the GPs leads, by Fourier transform, to a description of the rearrangement of the charge and magnetization distributions. The VCS reaction γ* + pp + γ was experimentally accessed through the reaction e + pe + p + γ of electroproduction of photons off a cryogenic liquid Hydrogen target. Data were collected in Hall A at Jefferson Lab between …

Functional Domain Contributions To Signaling Specificity Between The Non-Receptor Tyrosine Kinases C-Src And C-Yes, Justin Matthew Summy Jan 2001

Functional Domain Contributions To Signaling Specificity Between The Non-Receptor Tyrosine Kinases C-Src And C-Yes, Justin Matthew Summy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

c-Src and c-Yes are two widely expressed and highly homologous members of the Src family of non-receptor tyrosine kinases and are involved in a diverse range of cellular signaling pathways. They are frequently activated in human cancers, and thus represent potential targets for anti-tumor drug design. The high level of homology between these two kinases includes not only sequence similarity, but also overlapping regulation and function. Despite the redundancies between c-Src and c-Yes, however, specificity in signaling has been demonstrated between the two proteins. It was hypothesized in these studies that differences in the signaling capacities of c-Src and c-Yes …

Self -Efficacy And Spirituality In The Recovery Process From Alcohol Dependence: A Paradox., Julie Ann States Jan 2001

Self -Efficacy And Spirituality In The Recovery Process From Alcohol Dependence: A Paradox., Julie Ann States

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Literature in the field of addiction supports the importance of self-efficacy and spirituality in the process of recovery from addictive disorders. However, the research on self-efficacy and spirituality among alcohol dependent individuals has not addressed the specific relationship of these constructs throughout the recovery process. The current study provides an exploration of self-efficacy and spirituality as they relate to the recovery process from alcohol dependence. Data were collected from 81 adult (over age 18) clients who sought treatment at an outpatient drug and alcohol agency. Each client met the criteria for alcohol dependence based on DSM IV criteria, and was …

Acetaminophen-Induced Proliferation Of Estrogen-Responsive Breast Cancer Cells Is Associated With Increased C-Myc Rna Expression And Nf-Kb Activity., Samantha Lynn Gadd Jan 2001

Acetaminophen-Induced Proliferation Of Estrogen-Responsive Breast Cancer Cells Is Associated With Increased C-Myc Rna Expression And Nf-Kb Activity., Samantha Lynn Gadd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Previous studies demonstrated that acetaminophen-induced proliferation of estrogen (E2)-responsive breast cancer cells via an estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent pathway (Harnagea-Theophilus et al., 1999). Studies reported here tested the hypothesis that acetaminophen stimulates proliferation of E2-responsive breast cancer cells by activating ER as a transcription factor and inducing expression of E2-regulated genes. ER binding assays demonstrated that acetaminophen does not compete with E2 for ER binding in MCF-7 cells, indicating that acetaminophen does not bind ER in a manner similar to E2. Ribonuclease protection assays compared the effects of acetaminophen and E2 on expression of selected genes (c-myc, c-fos, cyclin D1, bcl-2, …

Alternative Education In West Virginia: Perceptions Of Programs, Leadership And Success., Tammy Kay Brock-Fowler Jan 2001

Alternative Education In West Virginia: Perceptions Of Programs, Leadership And Success., Tammy Kay Brock-Fowler

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

More and more students are being labeled at-risk in our educational system. These students are often behind academically, have dropped out of school, or have been suspended or expelled from conventional high schools. In West Virginia in 1995, 4,008 students did not complete high school (West Virginia University Survey Research Center, 1977). Alternative schools or programs are a direct result of a need to provide options to students who cannot be accommodated by conventional public schools. Alternative Education Program in West Virginia is defined as an authorized departure from the regular school program designed to provide educational and social development …

Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Solar-Dried Mangoes And High-Dose Vitamin A Supplements In Improving The Vitamin A Status Of Gambian Children, Bakary Seihou Drammeh Jan 2001

Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Solar-Dried Mangoes And High-Dose Vitamin A Supplements In Improving The Vitamin A Status Of Gambian Children, Bakary Seihou Drammeh

All ETDs from UAB

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a public health problem in the world. Carotene-rich foods may prevent VAD. We tested the effectiveness of mangoes on vitamin A status in a region with subclinical VAD. We randomized 176 rural Gambian children aged 2–7 y to receive 1 of 4 treatments: 75 g dried mango (rehydrated before eating) plus 5 g fat 5 d/wk for 4 mo (MF), ( n = 44); 75 g dried mango without fat 5 d/wk for 4 mo (M), ( n = 45); one 200,000 IU vitamin A capsule at baseline (A), ( n = 44); or one …
