The Effect Of Mulching On Herbaceous Wetland Creation Areas In West-Central Florida, Christopher J. Anderson

Wetland mulching is the transfer of soil (often from a wetland area which is going to filled or otherwise impacted) on to the surface of a wetland creation area. The primary intent of mulching is to transfer wetland vegetation in the form of seeds and propagules, from the natural wetland to the creation area. This technique also is used to transfer organic matter and microbial fauna existing in the soil to the creation area. My study examines the effects that wetland mulching has on: 1) percent organic matter in the soil, 2) the wetland affinity of plant communities present, 3) …

Intellectual Property Rights For Agricultural Biotechnology: Piracy And Its Ramifications For U.S. Agriculture, Konstantinos Giannakas

Parallel revolutions in molecular biology and the legal framework that assigns intellectual property rights (IPRs) to plant genetic resources have resulted in the emergence of agricultural biotechnology and the introduction of genetically modified (GM) products into the food system. IPRs create economic incentives for research and development by making the innovator the residual claimant of the benefits associated with the new technology.

Modeling The Effects Of Transforming Growth Factor-Beta On Extracellular Matrix Alignment In Dermal Wound Repair, J. C. Dallon, J. A. Sherratt, P. K. Maini

We present a novel mathematical model for collagen deposition and alignment during dermal wound healing, focusing on the regulatory effects of TGF. Our work extends a previously developed model which considers the interactions between fibroblasts and extracellular matrix, composed of collagen and a fibrin based blood clot, by allowing fibroblasts to orient the collagen matrix, and produce and degrade the extracellular matrix, while the matrix can direct the fibroblasts and control their speed. Here we extend the model by allowing a time varying concentration of TGF to alter the properties of the fibroblasts. Thus we are able to simulate experiments …
