Near the Lewis & Clark Trail is a creative writing thesis that contains two distinct parts. Part one is a short story cycle: a collection of interlinked narratives that together, tell a larger, cohesive story. Many different points of view, narrative techniques, and non-linear time sequences are used in order to provide a pastiche of different voices, points in time, and perspectives, that ultimately form an overall narrative structure. In addition to the stories, there are several fictional documents that are used to separate the work at critical times, and to provide subtext. In between the stories are: a letter …

An increasingly urgent task in the field of conservation biology is to identify changes in abiotic and biotic interactions that result when large areas of forest are converted to small fragments surrounded by anthropogenic landscapes. My research, conducted in lowland dipterocarp rain forest at the 2,500-ha Pasoh Forest Reserve in Peninsular Malaysia, investigated a novel but strongly negative edge effect - namely, a tremendous increase in the density of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) and the resulting deleterious impacts on the understory plant community. Diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent condition, afflicting an estimated 6% of the United States adult population. It is also a complex condition to manage. Dietary, exercise, and drug therapies are essential for reducing the risk of various neurologic and vascular diseases related to disease progression. Tight control of blood glucose as achieved through intensive pharmacologic therapy has been shown to decrease the risk of developing several types of diabetic complications. Success in achieving tight blood glucose control is contingent upon adherence to the prescribed hypoglycemic drug regimen , a behavior known to often be sub-optimal. The objectives of this …

Urban storm water runoff mobilizes and transports significant loads of heavy metals. Promulgation of NPDES Phase II regulations has spurred development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for in-situ control of heavy metals. In this study, Amphoteric materials such as manganese oxides and iron oxides on the various substrates including silica sands, polymeric beads and cementitious particles were investigated. Surface characterization results indicated that oxide coatings ranged from 20 to 200-mum in depth, and surface areas were significantly increased by greater than a factor of one thousand compared to uncoated media. Contaminant bioavailability depends on physicochemical processes such as adsorption/desorption, diffusion, and dissolution. The rates of sorption and desorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,3-Dichlororbenzene (1,3-DCB) were studied. Desorption kinetics of 3-month and 5-month old contaminated soils showed that progressively less amount of contaminant was available for facile desorption compared to freshly contaminated soil in an empirical non-linear model. Microcosm batch studies were conducted to study the biodegradation of 1,3-DCB in the aqueous and soil phase containing a freshly contaminated soil and a soil containing only the desorption resistant fraction. The presence of the soil reduced the rates of biodegradation. It is …

One of the cultural changes noted in American society in the last fifty years has been a noticeable increase in the public use of sexual profanity, particularly by women. Many commentators attribute this change to the sexual revolution of the nineteen-sixties and seventies, as well as the increasing emancipation of women from traditional gender roles. This dissertation examines the ideological foundations that have shaped both western sexual attitudes and the nature of modern use of sexual profanity, to question whether these changes are indicative of greater gender equity. This dissertation explores Nietzsche's political theory through an analysis of his major work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is demonstrated that the narrative structure of Zarathustra follows from a politically-grounded critique of collective human existence. Nietzsche critiques the state and mass society as inherently repressive. He critiques the concept of the community and friendship as producing ressentiment and bad conscience. One of the central metaphors in Zarathustra proves to be that of nausea, arising from contempt for the mediocre masses of humanity and the realization of the chaotic and contingent nature of existence. Using the Pathfinder computer algorithm comparisons were made of participants' knowledge organization of sexual, sexually aggressive, and aggressive concepts. Three hundred and fifty-two heterosexual males (81 admitting a past history and future likelihood of sexual aggressive/coercive behavior; 111 admitting a past history of engaging in sexual aggression; 88 admitting no past history of or future likelihood of engaging in sexual aggression) rated all possible pairwise combinations of 18 words relevant to sex, aggression, sexual aggression, and emotion. The incidence of iguana-associated salmonellosis reported in humans during the 1990's is a public health concern. This research is the first attempt to describe the epidemiology of Salmonella in the green iguana. Seasonal prevalence of Salmonella in green iguanas and their environment were estimated at a commercial iguana farm in El Salvador. The prevalence of Salmonella was lower in adult iguanas (44%) than in yearlings (50%) (Odds ratio (OR): 0.77, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI): 0.6--0.96) and higher in male iguanas (50%) than females (41%) (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2--1.8). Ultra-thin films of Au are formed on glass by thermal evaporation of Au onto a silane-modified glass surface. Monolayers of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane on glass (APS/glass) are outstanding surfaces for the formation of adherent, electrically conductive, smooth, and highly oriented Au films. Scanning tunneling microscopy images indicate that ultra-thin Au films are highly conductive and have a significant {111} texture, and X-ray diffraction studies confirm the latter. In addition, Au films on APS/glass surface are not removed by tape tests, pointing to a strong chemical interaction between the Au and amine surface. Unlike metal adhesion promoters, APS layer does not diffuse through …

The general purpose of this study is to relate the fields of geography and religion at both the academic and the practical levels. Primarily, it investigates the New Testament description of the land and its human occupancy. Secondarily, it identifies New Testament attitudes toward geography and suggests implications for its study and practice. It describes the geography, both physical and human, for each of the five classes of the document's book in a separate chapter. The chapter on the synoptic gospels discusses mountains, weather, biogeography, agriculture, occupations, and urban geography. Four kinds of soil reveal different responses to the word. …

This study examines the contrasting themes of land degradation and environmental stewardship of farming enterprises in the regional context of the Upper Pearl River Basin of Mississippi. Both the previous imagery and analysis of Southern Cotton Belt agriculture emphasize the profligate nature of farming practices. The contribution this study makes is to amend both the stock images and macro-analyses of Southern cotton culture. Analysis at the sub-regional level demonstrates that many farmers actually practiced sound land management techniques. Reconstructing the experiences of farmers in the Upper Pearl River Basin provides examples of ways in which regional distinctions amend widely conceived …

Resorcinarenes are a unique class of cyclic aromatic tetramers that have been known for over a century. In our laboratories, we have reported the first synthesis, isolation, and characterization of resorcinarenes with arylboronic acid functionality their framework. The physical property studies of our new resorcinarene series resulted in covalent and non-covalent binding studies, which revealed the first evidence chair (c2h) resorcinarenes can compete effectively with their crown (c4v ) counterparts the binding of polar guests (i.e. carbohydrates). A conceptual model of relationships between mangrove community structure and their physico-chemical environment is developed for point bars and islands in the Tempisque-Bebedero estuarine system, Pacific coast, Costa Rica. The model identifies key variables whose relationships to mangrove forest structure are the focus of extended field and mesocosm studies. Point bars and islands are very dynamic features constantly modified by hydrology and sediment dynamics. In the Tempisque-Bebedero system, they are additionally modified by extensive agricultural activities. High riverine sediment loads, associated with irrigation and seasonal wind-driven resuspension, result in significantly higher sediment deposition in lower intertidal zones; upper intertidal zones …

The synthesis of a series of polyfunctional Calpha,C alpha-disubstituted glycines is described. The lysine-like amino acid analog, Api, was prepared by regioselective hydrolysis of a triBoced hydantoin, followed by Nalpha-protection to yield the first orthogonally protected ionizable Calpha,Calpha-disubstituted amino acid which is alicyclic. The synthesis of three orthogonally protected tetrafunctional amino acids, Bap, Bglu, and Basp was envisioned by alkylation of the organic synthon ethyl nitroacetate. Subsequent regioselective modification should allow for the isolation of the first tetrafunctional amino acid derivatives suitable for solid-phase synthesis.
