This book gathers essays that are all, in one way or another, connected with ancient Greek and Roman religions. The essays cover a wide range—both chronological and geographical—of religious discourse and practice from Classical Athens on to seventeenth-century America via medieval Europe. The Selection Of Narrow Wavebands For Optimizing Water Quality Monitoring On The Great Miami River, Ohio Using Hyperspectral Remote Sensor Data

Remote sensing data were successfully used to estimate spatial and temporal variation of optical water quality parameters such as chlorophyll a, turbidity and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) of the Great Miami River, Ohio. During the summer of 1999, spectral data were collected with a hand-held spectroradiometer, a laboratory spectrometer and airborne hyperspectral sensors. Approximately 80 km of the Great Miami River were imaged during a flyover with a Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) sensor. Approximately 10 km were imaged during a second flyover to repeat coverage of the urban and industrial influences around the city of Dayton, Ohio. Instream measurements …

Near the Lewis & Clark Trail is a creative writing thesis that contains two distinct parts. Part one is a short story cycle: a collection of interlinked narratives that together, tell a larger, cohesive story. Many different points of view, narrative techniques, and non-linear time sequences are used in order to provide a pastiche of different voices, points in time, and perspectives, that ultimately form an overall narrative structure. An increasingly urgent task in the field of conservation biology is to identify changes in abiotic and biotic interactions that result when large areas of forest are converted to small fragments surrounded by anthropogenic landscapes. My research, conducted in lowland dipterocarp rain forest at the 2,500-ha Pasoh Forest Reserve in Peninsular Malaysia, investigated a novel but strongly negative edge effect - namely, a tremendous increase in the density of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) and the resulting deleterious impacts on the understory plant community. Diabetes mellitus is a highly prevalent condition, afflicting an estimated 6% of the United States adult population. It is also a complex condition to manage. Dietary, exercise, and drug therapies are essential for reducing the risk of various neurologic and vascular diseases related to disease progression. Tight control of blood glucose as achieved through intensive pharmacologic therapy has been shown to decrease the risk of developing several types of diabetic complications. Urban storm water runoff mobilizes and transports significant loads of heavy metals. Promulgation of NPDES Phase II regulations has spurred development of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for in-situ control of heavy metals. In this study, Amphoteric materials such as manganese oxides and iron oxides on the various substrates including silica sands, polymeric beads and cementitious particles were investigated. Surface characterization results indicated that oxide coatings ranged from 20 to 200-mum in depth, and surface areas were significantly increased by greater than a factor of one thousand compared to uncoated media. Contaminant bioavailability depends on physicochemical processes such as adsorption/desorption, diffusion, and dissolution. The rates of sorption and desorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,3-Dichlororbenzene (1,3-DCB) were studied. Desorption kinetics of 3-month and 5-month old contaminated soils showed that progressively less amount of contaminant was available for facile desorption compared to freshly contaminated soil in an empirical non-linear model. Microcosm batch studies were conducted to study the biodegradation of 1,3-DCB in the aqueous and soil phase containing a freshly contaminated soil and a soil containing only the desorption resistant fraction. The presence of the soil reduced the rates of biodegradation. It is …

One of the cultural changes noted in American society in the last fifty years has been a noticeable increase in the public use of sexual profanity, particularly by women. Many commentators attribute this change to the sexual revolution of the nineteen-sixties and seventies, as well as the increasing emancipation of women from traditional gender roles. This dissertation examines the ideological foundations that have shaped both western sexual attitudes and the nature of modern use of sexual profanity, to question whether these changes are indicative of greater gender equity. This dissertation explores Nietzsche's political theory through an analysis of his major work, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is demonstrated that the narrative structure of Zarathustra follows from a politically-grounded critique of collective human existence. Nietzsche critiques the state and mass society as inherently repressive. He critiques the concept of the community and friendship as producing ressentiment and bad conscience. One of the central metaphors in Zarathustra proves to be that of nausea, arising from contempt for the mediocre masses of humanity and the realization of the chaotic and contingent nature of existence. Using the Pathfinder computer algorithm comparisons were made of participants' knowledge organization of sexual, sexually aggressive, and aggressive concepts. Three hundred and fifty-two heterosexual males (81 admitting a past history and future likelihood of sexual aggressive/coercive behavior; 111 admitting a past history of engaging in sexual aggression; 88 admitting no past history of or future likelihood of engaging in sexual aggression) rated all possible pairwise combinations of 18 words relevant to sex, aggression, sexual aggression, and emotion. The incidence of iguana-associated salmonellosis reported in humans during the 1990's is a public health concern. This research is the first attempt to describe the epidemiology of Salmonella in the green iguana. Seasonal prevalence of Salmonella in green iguanas and their environment were estimated at a commercial iguana farm in El Salvador. The prevalence of Salmonella was lower in adult iguanas (44%) than in yearlings (50%) (Odds ratio (OR): 0.77, 95% Confidence Intervals (CI): 0.6--0.96) and higher in male iguanas (50%) than females (41%) (OR: 1.5, 95% CI: 1.2--1.8). Salmonella recovery was lower in the fall (41%) sampling period than …

Ecological impairment and flooding caused by urbanization can be expressed numerically by calculating the risks throughout the watershed (floodplain) and along the main stems of the streams. The risks can be evaluated in terms of the present and/or future. This article describes the methodologies for ascertaining the risks in the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment. The objectives of urban flood controls and ecological preservation/restoration of urban waters are often conflicting and, in the past, the sole emphasis on flood control led to destruction of habitat and deterioration of water quality. The purpose of this study was to examine the potential relationship between an individual’s temperament and her/his general disclosiveness. This study utilized Eysenck’s model of temperament and the Five Factor model of personality to predict an individual’s level of general disclosiveness and the sub-components of disclosiveness. The results indicated that both models were relatively equal predictors of general disclosiveness. Both models were moderately strong predictors of the valence and honesty dimensions of an individual’s disclosiveness. A moderately strong negative correlation between neuroticism and the valence dimension of disclosiveness was established. Apolipoprotein E (apoE), a lipid transporting protein, has been shown to play a vital role in nerve repair and remodeling. Since the olfactory system is in a continuous state of remodeling, the present study tested the hypothesis that apoE is required for normal functioning of the olfactory system. Olfactory function of the wild type (WT) and apoE deficient (apoE KO) mice was assessed by using three standard olfactory tests: 1) the buried food pellet (BFP) test; 2) the odor choice (OC) test; and 3) the odor cued taste avoidance (OCTA) test. How young adults' perceptions of their relationships with their siblings with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder differ from the perceptions of other young adults having non-disordered siblings were examined. Participants' perceptions of warmth, conflict, and rivalry with their siblings were measured using the Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire. The results indicated that perceptions of warmth, conflict, and rivalry were not significantly different for these two groups. An inverse relationship between warmth and rivalry was found for participants having siblings with ADHD. As feelings of warmth increased, feelings of rivalry decreased. Findings suggest future research in this area is needed for results that …

This study predicted that sex differences in performance can occur where the sense of touch serves as vision, and that the position of the test array may significantly affect performance. Sixty-four college undergraduates (32 males and 32 females), with ages ranging from 18-27 (M = 20.06, SD = 1.82) were recruited from the psychology subject pool of Eastern Illinois University for participation. Apparatus consisted of templates with raised line drawings of tilted jars containing water drawn on them. The subjects were blindfolded and instructed to interpret four jar drawings at a time. Spiro β,γ-unsaturated δ-lactones and fused β,γ-unsaturated δ-lactones are integral to a large number of naturally occurring compounds exhibiting a diverse range of biological activity. A new synthetic route to β,γ-unsaturated δ-lactones, consisting of a three-step sequence, has been investigated for the synthesis of these kinds of pharmacological intermediates. Ring closure of a β-hydroxy acid by dehydration, providing a 4-vinyl substituted β-lactone, and its ring expansion/rearrangement are the two key steps in this protocol. Aquatic habitat fragmentation is defined as the lack of connectivity between upstream and downstream populations and can occur along two gradients, the longitudinal gradient and the lateral gradient. The longitudinal gradient focuses on objects within the stream and is concerned with the disruption of stream flow, which is normally brought about by the presence of dams and bridges. Fragmentation along the lateral gradient, on the other hand, examines factors outside of the stream and is related to any loss or modification of the surrounding riparian zone.

This study investigated the possible governing mechanisms of inappropriate play behaviors of three developmentally normal children with a history of abuse/neglect. A functional analysis was performed using three conditions—contingent attention plus demands, contingent attention, and non-contingent attention. For one child, functional analysis revealed that inappropriate play behavior occurred more frequently in those conditions where contingent attention was present. Demands, at least when contingent attention was provided, did not appear to elicit or evoke inappropriate play behavior. For the other two children, functional analysis did not reveal any significant differences between conditions. The results of this study suggest that for some …
