Early-juvenile tripletail Lobotes surinamensis (n = 27; range 45–115 mm TL, 0 = 73.0 mm; range 3.2–34.7 g TW, 0 = 12.9 g) captured in pelagic Sargassum algae off coastal Mississippi in mid-July 1999 were reared in a recirculating seawater system for 210 days. Fish were maintained on a natural light-dark cycle and fed to satiation 3 times per day. Water temperature ranged from 25.2° to 29.0° C and salinity was 28.0‰. All fish were measured for length and weight on days 1, 60, 135 and 210 of the study. Between these dates, mean daily TL growth rates were 2.2 …

Although color pattern can vary among and within species of the Crustacea, it can also be a conservative feature that can be very helpful in field identifications. This is often the case in the Crustacea Decapoda, where sibling species can be detected by subtle differences in color (e.g., Williams and Felder 1989, Zimmerman and Felder 1991, Knowlton and Mills 1992). Stomatopods are among the most colorful crustaceans when living. Factors Mediating Cheatgrass Invasion Of Intact Salt Desert Shrubland, Susan E. Meyer, Susan Garvin, Julie Beckstead

Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) has recently displaced salt desert shrubland in many areas of the Great Basin. We studied the dynamics of cheatgrass invasion into an intact shadscale-gray molly community in Dugway Valley, Utah, by adding seeds and manipulating disturbance regime and resource availability. Shrub clipping or cryptobiotic crust trampling on large plots increased cheatgrass recruitment and biomass production slightly in a favorable moisture year (1997 to 1998), whereas in a less favorable moisture year (1998 to 1999) these disturbance treatments had a significant negative effect. The Agathidinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Fauna Of The Marmara Region, Özlem Çeti̇n, Ahmet Beyarslan
Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study was carried out to determine the species of the subfamily Agathidinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in the Marmara region of Turkey. Samples were collected from 47 localities between 1985 and 1997. A total of 16 species were determined. The results revealed that Agathis fulmeki Fischer and Bassus linguarius (Nees von Esenbeck) are new records for the Turkish fauna. Agathis malvacearum Latreille, A. lugubris (Foerster, 1862) and Baeognatha armeniaca Telenga are new records for the Marmara region. The present study includes the species Bracon (Glabrobracon ) osculator Nees, B. (G.) lividus Telenga, B. (G.) planinotus Tobias, B. (G.) tschitcherini Kokoujev, B. (G.) helleni Telenga, B. (G.) piger Wesmael, B. (G.) variator Nees from the genus Bracon Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Braconinae). Morphological descriptions and its general distribution and distribution in Turkey are given. Bracon (G.) planinotus Tobias and B. (G.) helleni Telenga were found to be new records for Turkish fauna.

This paper describes the development and optimization of chiral, nonpolar media with large second-order nonlinear optical responses. We employ molecular engineering, quantum-mechanical sum-over-states theory, and measurements of molecular hyperpolarizability by means of Kleinman-disallowed hyper-Rayleigh scattering in order to understand molecular properties. Then we analyze the appropriate arrangement of the chromophores that produce an optimum axial nonlinear optical medium. Chromophores with large Kleinman disallowed traceless symmetric second-rank tensor hyperpolarizabilities /spl beta/ can be aligned so as to result in large susceptibilities /spl chi//sup (2)/ in structures that lack polar order. We found that /spl Lambda/-shaped chromophores with C/sub 2v/ or similar …

The rural communities of the province of Imbabura present multiple problems of environmental, educational, and economic kind. Previous studies show that the rural communities of the Ecuadorian population present serious problems of health and nutrition, among those that excel are: poliparasitosis, respiratory infections and diarrheal, malnutrition, deficiency of micro nutrients, sanitary deficiency, scarce economic resources and low level of instruction. All these factors have caused a decrease in the productive capacity of the country and affected their level of development.
