Trachelomonas Spp. And Other Euglenophyceae Taxa In A Southeastern Virginia Lake, Harold G. Marshall

Trachelomonas species from Lake Kilby, a reservoir lake in southeastern Virginia are described with supportive electron micrographs. The most abundant Trachelomonas species were T. hispida and T. volvocina. Other members of the Euglenophyceae occurring in this lake are identified.

In reflective ultrasonic imaging, some statistical parameters can be extracted from the backscattered RF signal. Applying Rayleigh statistics or non-Rayleigh statistics to these parameters, the underlying tissue parameters such as effective scatterer number density that characterize the tissues can be further estimated. However, if the statistical processing is applied to the time domain signal, narrow band excitation pulse needs to be used when we consider the frequency dependency of the backscattered signal. Although aquaporin 5 (AQP5) is the major water channel expressed in alveolar type I cells in the lung, its actual role in the lung is a matter of considerable speculation. By using immunohistochemical staining, we show that AQP5 expression in mouse lung is not restricted to type I cells, but is also detected in alveolar type II cells, and in tracheal and bronchial epithelium. Aqp5 knockout (Aqp5−/−) mice were used to analyze AQP5 function in pulmonary physiology. Compared with Aqp5+/+ mice, Aqp5−/− mice show a significantly increased concentration-dependent bronchoconstriction to intravenously administered Ach, as shown by …

Dementia is a syndromic diagnosis defined by three criteria: cognitive decline, multiple impairments, normal level of consciousness. It is an acquired disorder characterized by multiple impairments of cognition (distinct elements of intellectual processing such as memory, abstraction, judgment, and language) occurring in an individual who is fully alert and attentive. It is now known that at least seventy-five distinct diseases can present as this syndrome and that most of these diseases have specific syndromic patterns that allow clinicians to distinguish among them.

Distribution And Habitat Associations Of Northern Spotted Owls In Marin County, California, Nola Chow

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

I examined the distribution and habitat associations of northern spotted owls at the southern extent of their range in Marin County, California. To estimate density and distribution I used nighttime surveys followed by daytime visits to locate owls and estimate site occupancy status. I measured 26 macro and micro habitat variables at 46 occupied sites and compared them to an equal number of paired random sites. Spotted owls had a high density ( = 0.376 owls/ km), based on the 82 territorial owls found in the 218 km2 study area which is the greatest density yet reported for this species. …

Early Diagenesis Of Calcium Carbonate In Long Island Sound Sediments: Benthic Fluxes Of Ca2+ And Minor Elements During Seasonal Periods Of Net Dissolution, Mark A. Green, Robert C. Aller

The present study confirms the quantitative significance of carbonate dissolution for associated major and minor element solute fluxes in shelf deposits of temperate regions. Multiple measurement techniques all demonstrate that net dissolution of CaCO₃ dominates during winter in Long Island Sound sediments and results in large fluxes of Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, and F^- out of the seafloor. Ca²⁺ fluxes averaged from 4 independent methods range from ~5 to ~13 mmol m^-2 d^-1 with highest flux occurring when surface deposits are most undersaturated with respect to common biogenic carbonates. Because a large amount of the docket for the Court of Appeals of Virginia is comprised of criminal cases, and since the General Assembly regularly turns its attention to the questions of crime and punishment, in almost any year there are a great number of substantial developments in the criminal law. This past year was no exception. This article surveys developments in criminal law and procedure in Virginia from July 2000 to July 2001. Although this article is intended to survey significant developments over the past year, the reader is cautioned to bear in mind several important caveats.

Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism Analysis (Rflp) Of Some Streptomyces Strains From Soil, Ekrem Atalan

To separate the unknown Streptomyces strains isolated from soil samples, the interspacer regions of 16S-23S rDNA of 14 isolates were amplified with PCR (polymerase chain reaction) and digested with three restriction endonucleases, namely, Bsp143I, HaeIII and MnlI. The restriction patterns were used for RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) analysis. A dendrogram were constructed using the unweighed pair group method using arithmetic averages algorithm (UPGMA) after analysis restriction patterns. In this study, the fertilizing ability of in vitro capacitated bull spermatozoa in two different capacitation media (Hypotaurine and Follicular Fluid) was investigated. Ovaries were obtained from slaughterhouse and were transported to the laboratory in saline (0.9% NaCl) at 30-35ºC. Cumulus oocyte complexes were collected from antral follicles of 2 to 8 mm in diameter. After collected oocytes were classified, they were transferred to maturation medium. Oocytes were cultured for 24 hours in a 100 ml drops of maturation media overlaid with mineral oil under 5% CO_2, 95% humidity in air at 38.5ºC. At the end of this incubation, oocytes …

In this paper we report the widespread occurrence of large annelids (Polychaeta: Nereididae) in Hawaiian stream depositional habitats, drawing attention to the lack of knowledge of Hawaiian stream energetics. Specimens of Namalycastis sp. were collected from five Hawaiian Islands from May–July 1995 and from the island of Maui from July–December 1999 and April–July 2000. Most specimens collected were N. hawaiiensis, while two specimens of N. abiuma were collected from a single site on the island of Molokai. Since our goal was to determine characteristic differences between Bromus richardsonii and B. ciliates, a discriminate analysis (DA), principal components analysis (PCA), multidimensional scaling (MDS), bivariate analysis, and an amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLP) analysis were undertaken on 93 herbarium specimens and 31 field-collected populations. A cytological survey of B. ciliates, B. richardsonii, and B. mucroglumis confirm previous reports that the first species is diploid (2n = 14) and the latter two are tetraploid (2n = 28).
