Honey amylase was evaluated for potential to degrade food starch and cause viscosity loss. Honey was assayed for amylase activity with diastase number (DN). A viscosity assay, developed with unmodified waxy maize starch, measured rate of viscosity decrease (RVD) by honey amylase. The relationship between DN and RVD was linear (R2 = 0.98). Modified waxy maize starches showed resistance to honey amylase. Heat treatment at 85 °C reduced the amylase activity in honey, but confirmed enzyme heat resistance. Optimum pH for honey amylase was confirmed at pH 5.3-5.6. Lower pH was effective at decreasing enzyme activity in both pure starch …

The Death Penalty In Virginia: Attempts At Legislative Reform, Tara Elgie

This paper will argue that the time has come for legislative reform of capital punishment. It will briefly examine the history of the death penalty, focusing on the provisions under which it was reinstated and whether those provisions are met under today's implementation. Then it will look to recent attempts by the Virginia General Assembly to reform the procedures by which it implements the death penalty. The paper will also explore public perception of the death penalty as an explanation for why the death penalty persists as the ultimate punishment, despite recent problems with its implementation.

Reproductive tract infections (RTIs) including sexually transmitted infections represent a silent worldwide pandemic that adversely impacts the reproductive health (RH) of women and men. Various community- and hospital-based studies in India have provided insights into the magnitude of the problem. The International Conference on Population and Development (1994) emphasized integration of RH services to meet the needs of men and women especially with prevention and management of RTIs/STIs. The emergence of HIV and the identification of STIs as a risk factor for the spread of HIV have further lent a sense of urgency for a programmatic response to address this …

Maendeleo Ya Wanawake (MYWO), with technical assistance from the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), has been implementing an Alternative Rite of passage programme as part of its efforts to eradicate the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in five districts in Kenya. This study addressed the factors that influence some families and individuals to adopt the Alternative Rite while others, exposed to the same messages discouraging FGM, decide not to. It also evaluated the effect of the training component of the Alternative Rite on the girls who participated.

An inherent tension exists between the goals of pronatalism and the actual policies through which law makers have often attempted to raise birth rates. Proponents of pronatalism often prefer to raise births only to specific racial/ethnic or national groups; yet in modern democracies, it is unacceptable for social policies to explicitly discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origin. Social benefits, such as family allowances, must be accessible to all citizens. The recent extension of certain previously denied family benefits to minority populations in France and Israel illustrates this tension and points to a future direction in which …

Cysticercosis is a helmenthic infection involving pigs and man. Most cases of cysticercosis occur in developing countries. The disease is very rare in Islamic countries, as moslems are supposed to abstain from eating pork meat. In the last 10 years, reports of cysticercosis among moslems were published. Imigrants from endemic countries, who work as housemaids and food handlers played a role in transmitting the disease. Man becomes a definitive host if he ingests insufficiently cooked pork meat, which contains viable Iarvae of Taenia Solium or cysticerci. OBJECTIVE: Due to the poor results achieved on combination chemotherapy and the unproven cost-effectiveness value of myeloablative therapy, the question has been raised; should patients with stage IV neuroblastoma be actively treated? The aim of the current study is to analyze retrospectively treatment results of 43 children with neuroblastoma with special stress on the rate and duration of remission in children with disseminated neuroblastoma. METHODS: Treatment of children with neuroblastoma consisted of surgical removal of the tumor, if possible, followed by chemotherapy for unresectable residual tumor including metastases. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to determine: 1) the frequency of patients admitted for phenytoin toxicity and their economic burden; 2) the clinical symptoms and signs of intoxication; 3) the causes or risk factors of intoxication, and 4) the ways to prevent phenytoin toxicity. METHODS: Retrospective review of hospital ICD coded database between 1987 and 1998. All patients with phenytoin intoxication were reviewed. RESULTS: Thirty-one patients were admitted 35 times for phenytoin toxicity. Phenytoin intoxication accounted for 1/5,000 admissions. Ataxia, confusion, dysarthria and nystagmus were the most common signs. The outcome was benign except for one patient who …

OBJECTIVE: The authors mainly focus on the initial observations of the implementation phase of a health project that aims to integrate mental health into primary care. METHODS: In the light of specific aims and objectives of both planning and curriculum development phases, 2- weeks of intensive psychiatric training consisting of basic theoretical and clinical concepts of psychiatry was imparted to a group of general practitioners and paramedical staff. The effect of hydrogen bonding on the conformation of organic moleculesunifies two projects in this thesis. In one project, the stability of the intramolecularhydrogen bond in derivatives of 2-guanidinobenzimidazole was studied bydynamic 1H NMR spectrometry. The impact that this intramolecular hydrogenbond had on the bond order of the neutral guanidino group and on the dynamicconformation of these aromatic structures was related to the concept of hydrogenbond-assisted resonance. In another project, an oligomer possessing repetitiveconformation and capable of much inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bondingwas designed and synthesized. Epitheliogenesis Imperfecta (EI) is a mechanobullous disease that occurs in newborn American Saddlebred and Belgian Draft foals. Necropsy evaluations of two American Saddlebred foals revealed broad skin lesions, dental abnormalities and oral mucosa lesions. Construction of a partial pedigree showing occurrences of EI in American Saddlebred horses was consistent with a recessive pattern of inheritance. An allelic frequency of 0.04 was estimated for the EI gene. The pathological signs of EI were similar to a disease in humans known as Herlitz Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa (HJEB). HJEB is caused by a defect in one of the three subunits of the laminin …

Boredom, although a regular occurrence among the general youth population of the modern society and a possible causal factor of truancy, drug use, suicide and crime, has been widely neglected within the fields of education, psychology, sociology, and criminology. Since it is the intention of this thesis to show that boredom is a causal factor of youth criminality which must be recognised and studied further, it is essential that boredom is thoroughly researched for both theoretical and practical reasons within the field of criminology. Yellagonga Regional Park is located in the northwest corridor of Perth and constitutes 1400 hectares of wetlands, parkland, open forest and open woodland. Few studies have been conducted on the native fauna in the Park's upland habitats. For this reason, a study of the abundance and distribution of western grey kangaroos (Macropus fuliginosus) was conducted. A walked survey using direct counts and individual recognition of kangaroos during winter, recorded a total of 123 kangaroos, 51 pouch young and 23 unidentified individuals in Yellagonga Regional Park, and a further 24 kangaroos and 18 pouch young at Edith Cowan University's Joondalup campus. …

Two of the major commercial prawn fisheries in Western Australia arc located in Exmouth Gulf and Shark Bay. Prawn fishing is the third most valuable fishing industry in WA, producing an annual income of $62 million. These two fishing regions are considered fully exploited (Fisheries WA Home Page) and careful management is needed to produce and maintain them as sustainable fisheries. The Western Australian Marine Research Laboratories have developed detailed computer models which estimate the stock abundance of the prawn fisheries. Litopenaeus setiferus, Atlantic white shrimp, is a commercially and recreationally valuable species, yet little is known of its population structure. Litopenaeus setiferus are found along the Atlantic coast from New York to St. Lucie, Florida, and from the Ochlockonee River on the Gulf coast of Florida to Campeche, Mexico. Gulf and Atlantic populations probably separated sometime during the last deglaciation period (10,000 to 20,000 years ago). In addition, the extensive freshwater ourflow of the Mississippi River may provide a physical barrier to gene flow, and concentrations of shrimp in Tabasco and Campeche Bay, Mexico, are thought to form a separate …

The article examines the contradiction between the formal legal advancements in gender equality and the persistent epidemic of violence against women in post-apartheid South Africa. Despite the African National Congress' (ANC) commitment to gender equality and the inclusion of women in political processes, the reality of widespread violence against women undermines the nation's democratic ideals and highlights the failure to address gender concerns within the broader nationalist agenda.

In the past few decades there has been growing evidence that species of Agrobacterium can be opportunistic animal pathogens. One of these species is Agrobacterium tumefaciens, which for years has been studied as a plant pathogen. The results of one published experiment suggested that an Agrobacterium toxin could kill mice (12). Other strong evidence for Agrobacterium as an opportunistic human pathogen is the over fifty published clinical cases in which humans were infected by Agrobacterium species (3, 13-25).
