Wind And Gulf Stream Influences On Along-Shelf Transport And Off-Shelf Export At Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, Dana K. Savidge, John M. Bane Jr.

Along-shelf transports across three cross-shelf lines on the continental shelf near Cape Hatteras have been calculated from moored current meter data over a continuous 24 month period in 1992-1994. The along-shelf convergence has been used to infer off-shelf export. Transport and transport convergence have been related to wind and Gulf Stream forcing and to variability in sea level at the coast. The along-shelf transport variability is primarily wind-driven and highly correlated with sea level fluctuations at the coast. Both winds and along-shelf transport exhibit a near-annual period variability. Along shelf transport is not well correlated with Gulf Stream offshore position. …

Observations Of Intratidal Variability Of Flows Over A Sill/Contraction Combination In A Chilean Fjord, Arnoldo Valle-Levinson, Fernando Jara, Carlos Molinet, Doris Soto

Underway velocity measurements were carried out for the first time in a Chilean fjord using an acoustic Doppler velocimeter with the purpose of elucidating the intratidal variability of flows through a pass, Paso Galvarino. The pass included a sill, where the bottom sloped by roughly 30%, and a coastline contraction of -90%. The relatively small dimensions of the pass allowed for rapid sampling of the flow evolution throughout the tidal cycle. The backscattered sound signal from the velocimeter and from an echo sounder were used to describe the vertical excursions of the pycnocline throughout the domain and to identify regions …

Neat definitions of biographical and autobiographical writing have been challenged in the twentieth century. This essay offers a comparative study of two texts which may be classified as autobiography or biography or both, and which, because of their blurred generic boundaries, bring to light several theoretical questions about life writing.

Will The Heavens Fall? De-Radicalizing The Precedent-Breaking Decision, Paul Waldau

This article offers an extended analogy for the purpose of posing basic questions about proposals for granting legal rights to some nonhuman animals. The analogy is drawn from the precedent-breaking eighteenth century English case Somerset v. Stewart, which liberated an African slave. The article argues that one can identify features of the eighteenth century debate which illuminate features of today's debate over proposed uses of centrally important legal concepts for some nonhuman animals. Using the comparison for the limited task of highlighting the complex cultural backdrop in each situation, the article suggests that the comparison helps one see the nature …

Reconstructability analysis (RA) decomposes wholes, namely data in the form either of set-theoretic relations or multivariate probability distributions, into parts, namely relations or distributions involving subsets of variables. Data is modeled and compressed by variablebased decomposition, by more general state-based decomposition, or by the use of latent variables. Models, which specify the interdependencies among the variables, are selected to minimize error and complexity.

Radiation is a powerful tool in fighting breast cancer. However, the mechanism of cell killing is not fully understood. It is therefore important to characterize radiation so that it may be used more effectively. In the present study the relationship between gamma radiation and DNA double strand break induction is investigated. DNA double strand breaks are the focus of this study because the biological consequences of DNA double-strand breaks are significant, and can result in cell-killing/ apotosis (Heilmann 1995). DNA double strand break induction is surveyed using a constant-field gel electrophoresis approach previously described by J. Heilmann (Heilmann 1995). A …

The Population Council initiated its work on adolescents in the mid-1990s. At that time, those advocating greater attention to adolescent issues were concerned about adolescent fertility—particularly outside of marriage—and adolescent “risk-taking” behavior. As an international scientific organization with its mandate centered around the needs of developing countries, the Council sought a more nuanced and context-specific understanding of the problems confronting adolescents in the developing world. AGS3 (Activator of G-protein Signaling 3) was isolated in yeast-based functional screen for receptor-independent activators of heterotrimeric G-proteins. To examine the role of AGS3 in mammalian signal processing, we defined the AGS3 sub domains involved in G-protein interaction, its selectivity for G-proteins and its influence on the activation state of G-protein. AGS3 co-immunoprecipitated with Gia3 from tissue lysates in a nucleotide dependent manner (GDP»GTPγS). The regions of AGS3 that bound Giα were localized to 4 thirty amino acid repeats (GPR - G-protein regulatory motif) in the carboxyl terminus (P463-S650), each of which were capable of binding Giα. Looking Under The Hood And Tinkering With Voter Cynicism: Ross Perot And “Perspective By Incongruity”, Mari Boor Tonn, Valerie A. Endress

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This essay examines Ross Perot’s 1992 presidential bid as a comic catalyst for a reinvigorated view of civic responsibility. Despite the Texas maverick’s political naiveté and penchant for miscalculation, his very presence in the campaign reanimated Americans’ conception of grassroots democracy. By examining important and previously unexplored distinctions between planned and unplanned incongruity, we probe the means by which Perot invited consideration of alternative political perspectives and offered an appealing glimpse into a dormant, more deeply held democratic ideal.

Effects Of Immigrant Status On Mexicans In The United States, Michelle Monique Balan

This thesis analyzes the relationship between immigration and mental health. I used data from a health and migration study of Mexican immigrant women in a Houston community. I found a statistically significant negative relationship between family social support and feelings of depression. Thus, family social support may have buffered some harmful effects of immigrating to the United States. However, I found inconsistent results with labor market variables that may be due to a measurement problem. Both employment variables were statistically significant (p<.05) for models (predictor, predictor and control) including loss of interest and these variables remained significant after control variables were added. Unfortunately, only one of the work variables--the number of months the respondent worked--was in the predicted direction. Contrary to expectations, the other employment variable (ever worked) was negatively related to a loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities.

Genetic transformation using the rice shoot apical meristem, derived from germinating seedlings, was established in this study for commercial varieties of Oryza sativa. To optimize apex-mediated DNA transformation in rice several parameters were tested to improve the efficiency and reliability of isolation of the shoot apices and regeneration of vegetative shoot apices. Results from these experiments indicated that certain factors were important in increasing the frequency of survival rate of the apex, co-cultivation and co-transformation. These factors included: the starting size of the apex had to range between 1.0 mm and 1.2 mm for maximum survival of the apex, concentration …
