In the following, noted science fiction scholar Marleen S. Barr argues for an increased attention to science fiction as a literature of the potentials of globalization, a genre that has largely been marginalized in discussions of the future of a globalized techno-culture. Further, Barr argues for greater attention being paid to feminist utopian fiction which helps to reimagine women's roles in the increasingly complex, and increasingly capitalistic, globalized techno-culture that has continued to marginalize the female body (and consciousness) in much the same way that scholars have denied the possibilities of utopian science fiction.

The aim of the paper was to test two new techniques that make use of channels in the visible range of the spectrum only to estimate vegetation fraction in corn canopies. High spectral resolution radiometers were employed to measure spectral reflectance, and the information content of spectra was investigated. Radiances in spectral channels of MODIS and MERIS were used to calculate Visible Atmospherically Resistant Indices, VARI_green=(R_green- R_red)/(R_green+R_red-R_blue) and VARI₇₀₀=(R₇₀₀-1.7*R_red+0.7*R_blue)/(R₇₀₀+2.3*R_red-1.3*R_blue). Internet Prescribing Limitations And Alternatives, Kara M. Friedman

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Ms. Friedman discusses the legal limitations placed on the consumer's ability to obtain drug prescriptions via the Internet. The article focuses on current legislative policies and regulations used to restrict access to prescription drugs over the Internet in the absence of a well-founded physician/patient relationship. The article argues that regulators might be able to satisfy the policy objective of ensuring that a learned intermediary is involved in prescription drug therapy by expanding the prescriptive authority of licensed pharmacists.

The literature of the early 1990s suggested changes in the structure of collection management itself in order to accommodate the changes both now occurring and those foreseen. Sheila Creth wrote in 1991 "Until recently, the primary focus of collection development has been on building collections." She outlined the functions of collection management in academic libraries to include: selection of materials, weeding, preservation, liaison with faculty and academic departments, reference and user education, fiscal responsibility, and policy development. This paper draws attention to the need for a gender analysis of the South African government’s proposed new policy on international migration, by identifying a number of areas of implicit gender discrimination. Such “discrimination by default” is of more than academic relevance, having important implications for national and regional development. Research undertaken by the Southern African Migration Project indicates a growing “feminization” of migration to South Africa from the Southern African region, as well as gender-specific motives and patterns of migration. If migration is to be effectively managed, such realities must be taken into account. The paper concludes by advocating …

High predation rates on ground-nesting birds and their eggs are a serious problem in many parts of North America. The concern is that predation rates have increased as nesting habitat quality and quantity have declined (Cowardin et al. 1985, Wilcove 1985, Sargeant et al. 1993, Greenwood et al. 1995). In North America, the most serious nest predators are habitat and diet generalists which thrive in human-modified environments (Harris and Saunders 1993). Examples include the American crow (Corvus brachyrhynchus), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis), and raccoon (Procyon lotor).

Survey Of The Macrobenthic Community In Ferguson Lake, Saline County, Arkansas, John D. Rickett, E. P. (Perk) Floyd

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

One hundred thirty benthic samples were collected on 33 visits to Ferguson Lake, Saline County, Arkansas, between May 1997 and October 2000. Sediments were visually examined and described, and some were returned to the lab for sediment oxygen demand (SOD) analysis. Fourteen taxa, representing five phyla of invertebrates, were identified. In all samples, oligochaetes, chaoborids, and chironomids comprised the majority of individuals, reaching densities up to 7449, 14,208, and 8783 per m2, respectively. When seasonally grouped, largest total abundances and greatest abundances of most taxa were collected during the winter months (December-February). A minor abundance peak occurred in July due …

With the exception of barley and rice, little is known about the existence of hemoglobins (Hbs) in cereals. This work reports the cloning and analysis of hb genes from maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) and teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis). Coding sequences of maize and teosinte hb genes (hbm and hbt, respectively) are highly similar to each other and are interrupted by three introns located at identical positions as other plant hb genes. Sequences of predicted Hbm and Hbt proteins are identical. The hydropathic profile of Hbm and Hbt is highly similar to that …

This report presents evidence on the performance in reading, mathematical and scientific literacy of 15 year old students, their schools and their countries, interpreted from an Australian perspective. It gives insights into factors that influence the development of these skills at home and at school, and discusses implications of the results for policy development. Chapter 5 focuses on results for the Australian states and territories and for other sub-national groups. Results achieved by Indigenous students and by students with language backgrounds other than English are included in this chapter. The Relationship Between Student-Teacher Ratio And Academic Readiness In West Virginia Preschool Programs, Michael A. Smith

The current study investigated the relationship between student-teacher ratio and academic readiness in West Virginia preschool programs. Data from 47 preschoolers enrolled in 14 Educare programs in West Virginia was examined. Scores from the School Readiness Composite (SRC) of the Bracken Basic Concepts Scale-Revised (BBCS-R) were compared with observed student-teacher ratios. Data analysis yielded a statistically insignificant correlation coefficient of -.061. However, due to limitations inherent in the data set and the abundance of research contradicting these findings, it is unlikely that the data presented here offers an accurate picture of the general relationship between academic readiness and student-teacher ratio.
