Nurse-Midwives’ Knowledge And Promotion Of Lactational Amenorrhea And Other Natural Family-Planning Methods For Child Spacing, Richard J. Fehring, Lisa Hanson, Joseph B. Stanford Mar 2001

Nurse-Midwives’ Knowledge And Promotion Of Lactational Amenorrhea And Other Natural Family-Planning Methods For Child Spacing, Richard J. Fehring, Lisa Hanson, Joseph B. Stanford

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

The purpose of this study was to describe and assess certified nurse-midwives’ (CNMs) knowledge and promotion of two modalities for child spacing, natural family-planning (NFP) and the lactational amenorrhea method (LAM). One thousand two hundred CNMs were randomly selected from a national membership list and mailed a 24-item questionnaire on NFP and LAM. Of the 514 respondents (42.8% return rate), 450 (87.5%) were currently practicing as CNMs. Respondents had an average age of 46 years, with an average of 10 years of practice. CNMs ranked NFP as the ninth most used and the eighth most effective family-planning method in their …

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Of Metallotetraphenyl Porphyrins Adsorbed On Ag2O And Silver Colloids, Ying-Hui Zhang, Dong-Ming Chen, Tian-Jing He, Fan-Chen Liu Feb 2001

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Of Metallotetraphenyl Porphyrins Adsorbed On Ag2O And Silver Colloids, Ying-Hui Zhang, Dong-Ming Chen, Tian-Jing He, Fan-Chen Liu

Journal of Electrochemistry

The biological significance of porphyrins and metalloporphyrins has stimulated intensive investigations on these compounds for many years. On the other hand, porphyrins and metalloporphyrins also have extensive applications in many other fields such as chemical modified electrodes, organic photovoltaic devices and biomimetic catalysis. The adsorption behavior and chemical reactions of metalloporphyrins on surfaces or interfaces are very important for these applications.

Study On Electrofusion Of Barley Protoplasts Using Fluorescent Dextra, Min-Yan Wang, Ye-Fang Gong, Zhi-Yu Jiang Feb 2001

Study On Electrofusion Of Barley Protoplasts Using Fluorescent Dextra, Min-Yan Wang, Ye-Fang Gong, Zhi-Yu Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The influence of interfacial active substance on the electrofusion of barley protoplasts was investigated using fluorescent dextra (F DX) as an anion additive. It was found that fluorescent dextra could inhibit the electrofusion process. The adsorption of fluorescent dextra on the membrane of protoplasts was detected by fluorescent microscopy technique. It was observed that after being stored in a solution containing fluorescent dextra a fluorescent ring appeared on the membrane of the protoplast, reflecting the adsorption of fluorescent dextra. The results of electrophoresis experiment also proved the adsorption of F DX on the surface of protoplasts, because the relative mobility …

Raman Spectroelectrochemical Study On Bioactive Molecules, Xiao-Wei Cao, Hai-Feng Yang, Zhe Su Meng Xiao Yun Wang, Xia-Qin Wu, Zong-Rang Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Electron-transfer reaction is known to be one of the key reactions for generating biological functions. Mechanism revelation at a molecular level of such kind reactions is to be very helpful for us to understand life essence. In fact, surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is one of the most powerful tools for the study on metal-electrolyte and metal-vacuum interfaces since 1970's. Moreover, Raman spectroscopic study in enzymology has provided attractive results during last twenty-five years.

The Fate Of Gene Patents Under The New Utility Guidelines Feb 2001

The Fate Of Gene Patents Under The New Utility Guidelines

Duke Law & Technology Review

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) recently finalized its patent utility guidelines. Promulgated by the PTO, the new guidelines will be used by patent examiners in determining whether a claimed invention should be awarded patent protection ;and will be used by patent applicants and attorneys who file patent applications. The guidelines focus primarily on the utility standards for gene and gene fragment patents, an issue that was featured in the PTO's 1999 Revised Interim Utility Guidelines and has been the subject of considerable public debate.

Glyphosate-Resistant Soybean Cultivar Yields Compared With Sister Lines, Roger Wesley Elmore, Fred W. Roeth, Lenis Alton Nelson, Charles A. Shapiro, Robert N. Klein, Stevan Z. Knezevic, Alex Martin Feb 2001

Glyphosate-Resistant Soybean Cultivar Yields Compared With Sister Lines, Roger Wesley Elmore, Fred W. Roeth, Lenis Alton Nelson, Charles A. Shapiro, Robert N. Klein, Stevan Z. Knezevic, Alex Martin

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Herbicide-resistant crops like glyphosate resistant (GR) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] are gaining acceptance in U.S. cropping systems. Comparisons from cultivar performance trials suggest a yield suppression may exist with GR soybean. Yield suppressions may result from either cultivar genetic differentials, the GR gene/gene insertion process, or glyphosate. Grain yield of GR is probably not affected by glyphosate. Yield suppression due to the GR gene or its insertion process (GR effect) has not been reported. We conducted a field experiment at four Nebraska locations in 2 yr to evaluate the GR effect on soybean yield. Five backcross-derived pairs of …

Enhanced Expression Of Human Platelet-Derived Growth Factor In Pichia Pastoris, David M. Kaetzel Feb 2001

Enhanced Expression Of Human Platelet-Derived Growth Factor In Pichia Pastoris, David M. Kaetzel

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents

Enhanced yields of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) B-chain are obtained using the Pichia pastoris yeast system. Yields of both wild-type and mutant human proteins are enhanced when the yeast is transformed with a vector containing the yeast mating factor promoter fused to a sequence encoding the mature protein. The secreted wild-type protein is indistinguishable from mature 29-32 kDa protein isolated from human and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. An RKK→EEE mutant exhibited reduced association with the cell surface and accumulated in the culture medium as 29-32 kDa forms. Stable transfection of U87 astrocytoma cells with RKK→EEE mutants of either …

Frame, Michael J. Hooper, Clyde F. Martin, Scott T. Mcmurry, Reynaldo Patino, Ernest E. Smith, Christopher W. Theodorakis

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The field of environmental toxicology, particularly as related to the area of ecotoxicology, continues to be a rapidly developing discipline of environmental science (Connell and Miller, 1984; Duffus 1980; Guthie and Perry, 1980; Hoffman et al., 1995; Moriarity 1988; Truhaut, 1977). The term ecotoxicology was introduced by Truhaut in 1969 (Truhaut, 1977) and this field is a natural extension of toxicology. It is best defined as the study of the fate and effects of toxic substances on an ecosystem and is based on scientific research employing both field and laboratory methods (Kendall, 1982; Kendall, 1992; and Hoffman et al., 1995). …
