Conversion Of Virulent Cryphonectria Parasitica From The Lula Lake Land Trust To Hypovirulent Strains, Pearl Hwang Apr 2001

Conversion Of Virulent Cryphonectria Parasitica From The Lula Lake Land Trust To Hypovirulent Strains, Pearl Hwang

Honors Theses

For almost a century, the fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica has existed in the United States as a wound parasite to American chestnut (Castanea dentata) trees. However, hypovirulence, evidence of spontaneous healing in Italy and Michigan, has given the American chestnut trees hope to one day be restored into its natural range. Viruses were the cause of such spontaneous healings. My hypothesis was that a viruscontaining hypovirulent strain of C. parasitica (in a brown background) would share alleles that control anastomoses with the local virulent strains, so a virus that causes hypovirulence could be transmitted into local virulent strains in vitro. Fifty …

Evidence For Two Mechanisms Of Amino Acid Osmolyte Release From Hippocampal Slices, R. Franco, M. E. Torres-Marquez, H. Pasantes-Morales Apr 2001

Evidence For Two Mechanisms Of Amino Acid Osmolyte Release From Hippocampal Slices, R. Franco, M. E. Torres-Marquez, H. Pasantes-Morales

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

A 30% decrease in osmolarity stimulated 3H-taurine, 3H-GABA and glutamate (followed as 3H-D-aspartate) efflux from rat hippocampal slices. 3H-taurine efflux was activated rapidly but inactivated slowly. It was decreased markedly by 100 μM 5-nitro-(3-phenylpropylamino) benzoic acid (NPPB) and 600 μM niflumic acid and inhibited strongly by tyrphostins AG18, AG879 and AG112 (25–100 μM), suggesting a tyrosine kinase-mediated mechanism. Hyposmolarity activated the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) extracellular-signal-related kinase-1/2 (ERK1/ERK2) and p38, but blockade of this reaction did not affect 3H-taurine efflux. Hyposmosis also activated phosphatidyl-inositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and its prevention by wortmannin (100 nM) essentially abolished …

Natural Attenuation Of Chlorinated Solvents In Subarctic Ground Water, Sharon Alice Richmond Apr 2001

Natural Attenuation Of Chlorinated Solvents In Subarctic Ground Water, Sharon Alice Richmond

Biological Sciences

Little is known about natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents in subarctic ground water. This study aimed to better understand the biogeochemistry and microbiology associated with naturally occurring processes of contaminant removal at two hydrologically diverse sites near Fairbanks, Alaska. Six Mile Village, located several km north of the Tanana River, is hydrologically stable, experiencing minor fluctuations in ground-water levels. Fort Wainwright is located adjacent to the Chena River and is hydrologically dynamic, experiencing seasonal flow reversals and substantial fluctuations in water-table elevations. By comparing data collected seasonally and with data collected at the two sites, I determined how ground-water/surface-water interactions …

Mediated Identity And Negotiated Tradition: The Inupiaq Atigi, 1850--2000, Cydny Brynn Martin Apr 2001

Mediated Identity And Negotiated Tradition: The Inupiaq Atigi, 1850--2000, Cydny Brynn Martin

Anthropology

The Inupiaq parka and associated activities constitute an unbroken practice from the prehistoric to modern times. The overall form and use of the garment remains constant while materials and technology evolve. Inupiaq parkas, often categorized as art because of their craft, creativity, and aesthetic appeal, also serve as tangible reminders of cultural abstractions. When considered within the age-old Inupiaq subsistence system, the position of women and the role of parka sewing suggests that both are critical to the maintenance of the human/animal relationship central to Inupiaq culture. The Inupiaq parka is seen to mediate between the physical and spiritual relationship …
