Amphibians have received increased attention in recent years from the scientific community and general public alike. Many populations throughout the world have declined or have been extirpated, often without an apparent cause. Concern about the status of amphibians has translated into a growing interest in systematic and statistically sound monitoring programs. Several extensive efforts to monitor populations of calling amphibians are in place, and more are under development. Necessary for the design of appropriate surveys is an understanding of the behavior, especially vocalization, of the various species, and how it varies by geographic location and environmental conditions. The public has expressed concern that radioactivity from Hanford’s wartime nuclear weapons production might contaminate salmon spawning grounds in the Columbia River. Salmon hatchlings (alevin) grow among the gravels in the riverbed, where they are susceptible to environmental stresses that include toxic chemicals and radioactivity. Some people worry that radioactivity from Hanford will damage the alevin genetically and slowly reduce the strength of the salmon stock.

In 2001, The RadioActivist Campaign (TRAC) found a radioactive fingerprint (europium-152) of old Hanford nuclear waste in 60% of sediments lying under the Hanford Reach and in 7 of 10 major salmon spawning areas. …

UNIVERSITY, Miss. -- Old Christmas trees -- Martha Stewart may have dozens of creative uses for them, but most folks just chuck the holiday centerpiece on the curb with the other remnants of cheer. Instead, consider using it to help fish and other wildlife, suggests Dr. Stephen Brewer, assistant professor of biology at The University of Mississippi (UM). Using old trees to construct fish shelters in lakes and reservoirs is one option that has gained favor with conservation officials.

Manipulation Of Prenatal Hormones And Dietary Phytoestrogens During Adulthood Alter The Sexually Dimorphic Expression Of Visual Spatial Memory, Edwin D. Lephart, Trent D. Lund

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit higher performance levels compared to females (a difference attributed to sex steroid hormonal influences). Based upon the results from our companion investigation, this study examined the influence of prenatal sex steroid hormone manipulations on VSM in adulthood, as assessed in the radial arm maze. Additionally, the influence of dietary soy phytoestrogens (i.e., the presence of high or low estrogen-like compounds present in the animal's diet) on VSM was examined in combination with the prenatal hormonal manipulations. The purpose of this thesis is to incorporate economics into lectures on environmental issues. This guide introduces several environmental issues, discusses the laws and regulations governing these issues, and discusses the economic instruments discussed in this guide are those that have been incorporated into environmental laws. These instruments allow environmental protection goals to be met at the least cost. Economic instruments are more flexible than command and control regulations and allow firms to choose the least cost method of reaching goals. Economic instruments also encourage advances in new technology. Students will be more receptive to the concept of using economics …

Role Of Wetlands And Endogenous Factors On Incubation Behavior Of Nesting Spectacled Eiders On The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, William Todd O'Connell

Patterns of nest attendance in ducks vary with endogenous and environmental factors. We examined variation in nest attendance of spectacled eiders on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska, during 1997-1998. We also examined spatial and temporal variation in wetland characteristics and potential foods available to nesting spectacled eiders. Time spent foraging was greater when spectacled eiders traveled farther to feed, and nest attendance was lower when food was more abundant, suggesting that females made tradeoffs between foraging and energetic requirements of nesting in response to food abundance and wetland conditions. We used re-sightings of Pacific Black Brant from San Quintin Bay, Ojo de Lieber Lagoon, and San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California and Boundary Bay, British Columbia, to examine winter population structure, variation in structural size and the importance of winter location to individual reproductive performance at the Tutakoke River colony. Sexes of adults and juveniles were distributed equally among winter locations. Adult structural size and mean age were similar among winter locations. A higher proportion of juveniles over-wintered in San Quinton Bay and Ojo de Liebre Lagoon. Individuals wintering at Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons were less likely …

In muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus), trace minerals required for reproduction and development are unknown. I described use of copper in pregnant muskoxen and concurrent accumulation of copper in fetuses. Utilization of copper was examined in neonates during early development and importance of milk as a source of copper was assessed. Additionally, I examined the effect of maternal copper supplementation during gestation on copper reserves acquired in-utero, and during lactation on mineral status of milk. During gestation, the fetus must acquire reserves of copper adequate to support early neonatal development because milk is a poor source of copper. The transition from milk …

Abundance And Ecology Of Martens (Martes Americana) In Interior Alaska, Brad Shults

I studied marten (Martes americana) abundance and ecology in the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve during 1991-1993. Using a multiple sample, mark-recapture estimator, I estimated marten densities to be 0.69, 0.41, and 0.45 martens/km² during each August for 1991-1993, respectively. Density estimates were derived with the boundary-strip method to address the edge effect inherent in live-trapping studies. During the study, marten density declined 43% between 1991 and 1992 and remained low during 1993. I hypothesize that a decline in primary prey (i.e., microtine rodents) and increased environmental stress (i.e., cold temperatures and snow cover) contributed significantly to the decline in marten …

Calving Ground Habitat Selection: Teshekpuk Lake And Western Arctic Caribou Herds, Rebecca A. Kelleyhouse

Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) exhibit relative fidelity to calving grounds each spring. The Western Arctic Herd (WAH) and Teshekpuk Lake Herd (TLH) calve separately on Alaska's north slope, each selective of the dominant vegetation type. The WAH consumed mostly sedges, though the TLH diet varied. Despite differing snow conditions between the calving grounds, both herds were selective of the lowest snow cover class. Rugged terrain was avoided by both herds. While the TLH selected a high rate of increase in biomass, the WAH selected high biomass at calving and at peak lactation. Herbivores influence, and often regulate energy flow. I investigated interactions between herbivory and the foods on which geese rely while nesting and rearing their broods on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in southwestern Alaska. In a captive Cackling Canada gosling (Branta Canadensis minima) experiment I decoupled the effects of seasonal declines in forage quality and availability on gosling development. An 11% decline in forage quality translated to goslings that were structurally smaller and 100 g lighter at 31 days of age. Forage availability had similar effects on gosling size, and the combined magnitude of these effects are similar to those observed in …

This thesis examines Willingness-to-Pay (WTP) for an endangered species across geographically nested samples using the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The samples range from the boroughs that contain critical habitat for the Steller sea lion to the state that contains these boroughs to the entire United States. Depending on the assumptions of the model, WTP varies tremendously from sample to sample. When WTP is unrestricted to the non-negative region, mean WTP for the United States is the highest and it is the lowest for the boroughs. The null hypotheses that mean WTP estimates are greater than zero were rejected for the …

Diets Of Juvenile Flatfishes Near Kodiak Island, Alaska, Brenda A. Holladay

Fisheries

Flathead sole, Pacific halibut, rock sole, and yellowfin sole were found co-existing near Kodiak Island as juveniles (<200 mm) during late summer. Dietary differences were attributed to fish species, size, and depth-sediment characteristics of their habitat. Two to three size classes were assigned within each species. Across all habitats, significant differences in dietary composition, stomach fullness, and diet diversity were found between size classes of different flatfish species. Within a single depth-sediment habitat, flatfishes of different species and size classes ate similar prey. Seven of nine species size classes had similar prey composition across multiple habitats. Significant differences in dietary composition across habitats were detected only for small Pacific halibut and small rock sole. The juvenile flatfishes near Kodiak were opportunistic feeders, and appeared to select habitat based on parameters other than the presence of specific prey taxa.

The Ecology Of Age-1 Copper Rockfish (Sebastes Caurinus) In Vegetated Habitats Of Sitka Sound, Alaska, Michael M. Byerly

Variables that may indicate habitat quality were measured to assess the relative value of shallow subtidal vegetated habitats to age-1 copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus). All habitats studied appeared beneficial to fish with respect to the particular variable measured. Relative growth rate was significantly higher in kelp than in other habitats while energy content was highest in eelgrass. Though fish in eelgrass had lower growth rates, they were significantly larger, and had high densities. Mixed kelp and eelgrass habitat was suboptimal with respect to growth and energy content but also had high densities. Fish in mixed habitat moved the least both …

In learning and memory tasks, requiring visual spatial memory (VSM), males exhibit superior performance to females (a difference attributed to the hormonal influence of estrogen). This study examined the influence of phytoestrogens (estrogen-like plant compounds) on VSM, utilizing radial arm-maze methods to examine varying aspects of memory. Additionally, brain phytoestrogen, calbindin (CALB), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) levels were determined. Results: Female rats receiving lifelong exposure to a high-phytoestrogen containing diet (Phyto-600) acquired the maze faster than females fed a phytoestrogen-free diet (Phyto-free); in males the opposite diet effect was identified. The present study investigates muscle protein expression in largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides through intra- and intermyomeric comparisons of white muscle. Using denaturing SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, muscle protein expression in the arm and cone regions of sequential myomeres was compared for three bass. Low percentage (4.75 %) polyacrylamide-SDS gels and cyanogen bromide (CNBr) peptide mapping revealed no obvious intramyomeric differences between the myosin heavy chains of the arm and cone regions. Electrophoresis of myofibrils and muscle homogenates on higher percentage gels also failed to demonstrate any significant differences between arm and cone regions in either the myosin light chains or any …
