The protection of Western Australia's aquatic animals, plants and habitats is important for many reasons. Fish, and many aquatic invertebrates, have significant commercial, recreational and social importance. Aquatic habitats provide food, refuge and breeding areas for fish and other animals. In addition, some habitats, such as rocky reefs and seagrass meadows, act as nursery sites for juvenile animals. Some habitats and their inhabitants (such as coral reefs) also have aesthetic values which support economically and socially important industries, such as tourism.

How To Evaluate The Financial Maturity Of Timber, Steven H. Bullard

If you own merchantable timber, you face an important question on a continuing basis: "Should I sell my timber now or should I wait?" How you respond to this question involves many issues, of course, including stand conditions, site conditions, and other physical and biological considerations. For many landowners, however, financial considerations are also extremely important. In this article we discuss "financial maturity" as a specific tool that can be used to help evaluate timber harvest decisions.

Modulation Of Cell Proliferation By Heterotrimeric G Protein In Arabidopsis, Hemayet Ullah

The alpha subunit of a prototypical heterotrimeric GTP-binding protein (G protein), which is encoded by a single gene (GPA1) in Arabidopsis, is a modulator of plant cell proliferation. gpa1 null mutants have reduced cell division in aerial tissues throughout development. Inducible overexpression of GPA1 in Arabidopsis confers inducible ectopic cell division. GPA1 overexpression in synchronized BY-2 cells causes premature advance of the nuclear cycle and the premature appearance of a division wall. Results from loss of function and ectopic expression and activation of GPA1 indicate that this subunit is a positive modulator of cell division in plants.

Characterization Of Partially Transesterified Poly(Β-Hydroxyalkanoate)S By Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Broderick Eribo

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) was used for the characterization of a partially transesterified poly(beta-hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA), a polymer produced by the bacterial strain Alcaligenes eutrophus with saponified vegetable oils as the sole carbon sources. The transesterification was carried out separately under acidic and basic conditions to obtain PHA oligomers weighing <10 kDa. The intact oligomers were detected in their cationized forms, [M + Na]+ and [M + K]+, by MALDI-TOFMS. A composition analysis, using the MALDI-TOF spectra, indicated that the oligomers obtained via acid catalysis contained a methyl 3-hydroxybutyrate end group, and those obtained by base catalysis had a methyl crotonate (olefinic) end group. In addition to hydroxybutyrate (HB), the oligomers were found to contain a small percentage of hydroxyvalerate, which was independently confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. In comparison, analysis of a commercial PHA polymer, transesterified under identical conditions, showed only the presence of HB, i.e., a pure poly(HB) homopolymer.

Parity violation in p-wave neutron resonances of ¹²¹Sb, ¹²³Sb, and ¹²⁷I has been measured by transmission of a longitudinally polarized neutron beam through natural antimony and iodine targets. The measurements were performed at the pulsed spallation neutron source of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Five statistically significant parity violation effects were observed in ¹²¹Sb, one effect in ¹²³Sb, and seven effects in ¹²⁷I. The weak interaction rms matrix elements and the corresponding spreading widths were determined.

Parity nonconservation (PNC) has been studied in neutron p-wave resonances of ¹¹⁷Sn. The longitudinal asymmetries were measured for 29 p-wave resonances in the neutron energy range 0.8 eV to 1100 eV. Statistically significant PNC effects were observed for four resonances. A statistical analysis determined the rms weak mixing matrix element and the weak spreading width. A weak spreading width of Γ_w=(0.28_-0.15^+0.56)×10^-7 eV was obtained for¹¹⁷Sn.

E. Franklin Frazier's Theory Of The Black Family: Vindication And Sociological Insight, Clovis E. Semmes

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Despite many accolades, E. Franklin Frazier, the first African American to be elected to the American Sociological Society, is also an object of scorn. Specifically, some accuse Frazier of a view that blames the ills of the Black community on female-headed households, illegitimacy, and family disorganization. Some also accuse Frazier of characterizing the Black family as broken and pathological and the opinion that families must be formal and nuclear in order to be viable. This paper argues that these representations of Frazier are mistaken and offers a more accurate and holistic portrayal of Frazier's sociological judgements and theorizing regarding the …

The Lower Hillsborough River system has been heavily impacted by stormwater discharges and reduction of freshwater inflow (Mote Marine Laboratory 1984; Water & Air Research Inc. 1993; Water & Air Research & SOl Environmental Services, Inc. 1994) .. A consequence has been increased salinity, the accumulation of fine-grained sediments and associated contaminants, as well as lowered DO levels. Analysis of past EPCHC data for the Lower Hillsborough River showed that benthic community characteristics (as measured by the TBBI) were not necessarily related to dissolved oxygen, salinity, or depth (Grabe and Karlen 1999; Grabe el al. 2000).
