Dark Production: A Significant Source Of Oceanic Cos, M. Von Hobe, Gregory A. Cutter, A. J. Kettle, M. O. Andreae

Carbonyl sulfide (COS) in air and dissolved in seawater was determined during a cruise in August 1999 in the Sargasso Sea in the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Dissolved concentrations at the sea surface displayed only a weak diel cycle with a mean of 8.6 ± 2.8 pmol dm−3 owing to low abundance of photochemical precursors and high temperatures causing rapid hydrolysis. Depth profiles measured over the oceanic mixed layer revealed significant vertical gradients of COS concentration with higher values at the surface, suggesting that the rate of photochemical production at the surface exceeds the rate of vertical mixing. This study investigates whether diverse aquaculture interest groups can collectively agree on ways to coordinate this resource use by developing goals and indicators of aquaculture sustainability. Specifically, this study used aquaculture experts from the production, research, regulatory and public interest sectors to identify and weight a broad range of indicators of aquaculture sustainability in the southeastern United States.

Mammary Gland Cell Death Also Involves Lysosomal Autophagy, Reginald Halaby

The mammary gland undergoes apoptosis when estrogen ablation occurs, either naturally or enforced. The gland is known to execute the apoptotic process post weaning. Although the involuting mammary gland displays the characteristic biochemical features of apoptosis, including DNA fragmentation, chromatin condensation, and the formation of apoptotic bodies, it also shows evidence of an autophagic death. In this report, apoptosis of the gland was induced by removing the pups from their nursing mothers. In particular, we show that lysosomes increased in size and number, and moved from basal to apical regions in dying rat mammary gland cells. Lysosomal enzyme activities were …

This paper describes the Pizzi Holistic Wellness Assessment tool. Using theory from the field of health promotion and expertise gained in his private home health practice, the author developed and pilot tested this assessment on a variety of individuals. The assessment is designed to be used with different populations in a variety of settings to help clients self assess their health and well-being.

There is evidence that women with bulimic symptoms are characteristically impulsive and have difficulty inhibiting various behaviors. Neuropsychological profiles of women with bulimic symptoms show patterns of impulsivity, inefficient problem solving ability, and an inability to inhibit irrelevant information. Women with bulimic symptoms also express substantially greater acceptance and internalization of sociocultural mores of thinness, and are more vulnerable to negative influence from laboratory exposure to stimuli representing “thin ideal” stereotypes. The present study examined a possible common link between the characterological and neuropsychological features of women with bulimic symptoms and their susceptibility to negative influence from mass media representations …

Synthesis And Spectroscopic Study Of 1,1 '-Bis-(2-Naphthol) Sulfide And Some Ester Derivatives, Emmanuel Enwelim Onwuachi

The refined synthesis of 1,1 '-bis-(2-naphthol) sulfide and the syntheses of the related acetate, propionate and phenoxyacetate ester derivatives are reported with IR and NMR spectroscopic analysis and proton signal assignments. The synthesis of 1,1'-bis-(2-naphthol) sulfide is found to be more effective at an ambient temperature of O°C and possibly lower, not under reflux conditions as previously reported. The spectroscopic data strongly indicate that all four compounds were synthesized. The IR spectra showed a band at 3692.63 em" for the hydroxide moiety of 1,1 '-bis-(2-naphthol) sulfide and the typical carbonyl stretching band around 1700 em" for the esters. The FT-NMR …

A general theory of volumetric growth for compressible elastic materials is presented. The authors derive a complete set of governing equations in the present configuration for an elastic material undergoing a continuous growth process. In particular, they obtain two constitutive restrictions from a work-energy principle. First, the authors show that a growing elastic material behaves as a Green-elastic material. Second, they obtain an expression that relates the stress power due to growth to the rate of energy change due to growth. Then, the governing equations for a small increment of growth are derived from the more general theory. The equations …

Birds have few reliable indicators of aging. Pentosidine (Ps), a biomarker of aging, is a product of non-enzymatic glycation, which accumulates in the tissues of an animal over its lifespan. The intent of this study was to determine if comparable change in Ps concentrations could be established in the skin of wild birds of known ages. Skin samples were obtained from the breast of 44 birds of various species. Foot webbing samples were obtained from 24 California Gulls. Collagen was measured by a hydroxyproline spectrophotometric method and Ps was quantified using reverse phase HPLC. Ps concentration in the skin and …

Ohio River electrofishing surveys identified embayments as preferred macrohabitat of subadult largemouth bass. Catch rates within macrohabitats were low ranging from 0.00--2.73 subadult bass/hour. Embayment electrofishing CPUE was higher than tributary or main channel except in spring, when tributary CPUE was highest.;Core use areas were calculated from biotelemetry data and ranged from 88--59,400 m2, representing 0.02--89.00% of available study location macrohabitat. Subadult bass movement was limited to nursery embayments or tributaries with infrequent movement to nearby main channel areas. Bass preferred a mixed microhabitat consisting of a combination of vegetation and woody debris. This mixed microhabitat was less common in …

Mountaintop surface mining for coal has been practiced in West Virginia for over three decades, but its environmental impacts have become increasingly scrutinized in recent years. Therefore, this study evaluated soil development on different aged mined lands. Four different ages (2, 7, 11, and 23 years) of minesoils and two different slope classes, nearly level to gently sloping and steep to very steep, along with three contiguous native soils on a reclaimed mountaintop removal mine in Logan County, West Virginia were described and sampled. Stand Dynamics And Disturbance History Of Five Oak -Dominated Old -Growth Stands In The Unglaciated Appalachian Plateau, James Spencer Rentch

Stand dynamics and disturbance histories of five eastern, oak-dominated old-growth stands were investigated using ecological field sampling techniques, dendrochronologogical methods, and a review of historical resources of original forest composition and patterns of human and natural disturbance. Witness tree tallies from 18th century land surveys show that presettlement forests in the study areas were oak-dominated forests. Quercus alba was, at minimum, twice as abundant as Q. velutina, the second ranked species. Acer saccharum and Fagus grandifolia were among the top ten ranked species at each site; however their importance value was consistently less than one-third the value for Q. alba. …

The development of a general route to the N-[2-(1-alkynyl)phenyl]ketenimines (enyne-ketenimines) and N-[2-(1-alkynyl)phenyl]carbodiimides (enyne-carbodiimides) and their subsequent thermal behavior are described. Like enyne-allene and enyne-ketene systems, these enyne-hetereocumulenes undergo cycloaromatization through two competing biradical mechanisms under thermal conditions and therefore could serve as potential DNA cleaving agents. The resultant nitrogen-containing hetereocyclic compounds are also biologically interesting. The research described herein provides a easy access to the synthesis of benzo[b]carbazole, indoloquinoline and indolonaphthyridine alkaloids. In addition, the new synthetic strategies for these compounds are very versatile, providing access to a diverse array of analogs of these alkaloids.

The potential for aerobic methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) degradation was investigated with microcosms containing aquifer sediment and groundwater from four MTBE-contaminated sites characterized by oxygen-limited in situ conditions. MTBE depletion was observed for sediments from two sites (e.g., 4.5 mg/liter degraded in 15 days after a 4-day lag period), whereas no consumption of MTBE was observed for sediments from the other sites after 75 days. For sediments in which MTBE was consumed, 43 to 54% of added [U-14C]MTBE was mineralized to14CO2. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of these sediments indicated the enrichment of species closely …

Mindful Virtue, Mindful Reverence, Ursula Goodenough, Paul Woodruff

How does one talk about moral thought and moral action as a religious naturalist? We explore this question by considering two human capacities: the capacity for mindfulness, and the capacity for virtue. We suggest that mindfulness is deeply enhanced by an understanding of the scientific worldview and that the four cardinal virtues—courage, fairmindedness, humaneness, and reverence—are rendered coherent by mindful reflection. We focus on the concept of mindful reverence and propose that the mindful reverence elicited by the evolutionary narrative is at the heart of religious naturalism. Religious education, we suggest, entails the cultivation of mindful virtue, in ourselves and …

Nebraska has five main pine forest regions dominated by Pinus ponderosa Laws, with other small naturally forested areas scattered in pockets across the state (Kaul & Rolfsmeier 1993). Three of these main forest areas occur naturally: the Pine Ridge in northwestern Nebraska, the Wildcat Hills south of the city of Scottsbluff, and the Niobrara River Valley in the north-central portion of the state. These three natural coniferous forest communities are similar in having gentle to steep slopes, well-drained sandy soils, and sandstone outcrops (Steinauer & Rolfsmeier 2000).
