This is an exploratory research study focusing on identifoing and meeting the needs of middle school and high school students who have been given a label as being emotionally and/or behaviorally disabled (EBD). St. Paul Public Schools' Social workers serving EBD students were surveyed in order to provide insight into the characteristics and needs of this group, Adolescents with an EBD label (emotionally and/or behaviorally disabled/disordered) may be the most vulnerable group of the "at risk" youth population. The gene sequence for ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) large subunit (LS)εN-methyltansferase (protein methylase III or Rubisco LSMT) from a plant which has a des(methyl) lysyl residue in the LS is disclosed. In addition, the full-length cDNA clones for Rubisco LSMT are disclosed. Transgenic plants and methods of producing same which have the Rubisco LSMT gene inserted into the DNA are also provided. Further, methods of inactivating the enzymatic activity of Rubisco LSMT are also disclosed.

Suicide is often described as an occupational hazard of working as a therapist because of the potential impact it has on the therapist. Using a qualitative design, five therapists were interviewed to explore their experiences of dealing with client suicide. The results were related to the theories of cognitive appraisal of stress, the theory of cognitive adaptation, and constructivist self development theory. Findings of the present study indicate that, the suicide of a client can have profound effects upon the therapist's personal and professional 1ife. Therapists found that agencies lack protocol for client suicide, often leaving the therapist feeling unprepared …

This study examines three distinct trends in the literature on women and leadership: advocacy for feminine leadership styles, support of gender-neutral leadership theory, and focus on factors beyond gender, such as issues of power and organizational structure. The study continues with an in-depth examination of the leadership experiences of five middle management women who work at publicly held companies and who specialize in marketing and corporate communications, fields that are of increasing importance in today's fast-paced, competitive economy. Results and discussion indicate five themes for further exploration: (a) the importance of competence to leadership success, (b) the value of communication …

Brown treesnakes are an invasive species to the island of Guam that have caused extensive ecological and economic damage. Efforts to control the snake population have included trapping using live mouse lures, but for logistical and economic reasons a synthetic lure is needed. When searching for live food, brown treesnakes use both visual and odor cues. However, when searching for carrion, odor cues are sufficient. Attempts to develop synthetic lures based on chemical reconstruction of the complex carrion odor have not succeeded. We provide evidence that a microbial–substrate interaction is important for bait take by brown treesnakes. Microbial cultures taken …

David Harkins was born in Lewiston, Maine on January 3, 1929. His mother, whose father was brought over from Italy as a chef, came from Portsmouth, New Hampshire. His father’s family emigrated from Ireland to Lewiston. His father, Thomas Harkins, learned the mason trade in Boston and worked for St. Peter’s Church and the Lewiston Public Works, where he worked on the underground system and paving. Harkins attended the Gosselin School, Frye School, Jordan School, and Lewiston High School, where he graduated in 1948. He attended Bates College and graduated in the class of 1953. A Hermeneutics Study: The Spirituality Of Adults With A Terminal Illness In A Hospice Program, Ginny K. Backman

Despite the increasing literature on the significance of spirituality to individuals with a terminal illness, specific research focused on the spirituality of individuals in hospice is limited to several quantitative studies, only one with a qualitative component. This qualitative study expands understanding or experience through hermeneutic analysis of in-depth interviews with three individuals with a terminal illness. The individual's narratives revealed "believing" as the way they found meaning in the present moment. "Always believing" and "adamantly believing" in a Supreme Being gave their daily lives meaning and direction. They were steadfast in leaving all to God for this life and …

Different Regulatory Mechanisms Modulate The Expression Of A Dinoflagellate Iron-Superoxide Dismutase, O. Keith Okamoto, Deborah L. Robertson, Thomas F. Fagan, J. Woodland Hastings, Pio Colepicolo

Biology

Regulation of antioxidant enzymes is critical to control the levels of reactive oxygen species in cell compartments highly susceptible to oxidative stress. In this work, we studied the regulation of a chloroplastic iron superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) from Lingulodinium polyedrum (formerly Gonyaulax polyedra) under different physiological conditions. A cDNA-encoding Fe-SOD was isolated from this dinoflagellate, showing high sequence similarity to cyanobacterial, algal, and plant Fe-SODs. Under standard growth conditions, on a 12:12-h light-dark cycle, Lingulodinium polyedrum Fe-SOD exhibited a daily rhythm of activity and cellular abundance with the maximum occurring during the middle of the light phase. It is becoming increasingly clear that the way in which a conjugated polymer film is cast affects the interactions between polymer chains and thus the optical and electrical properties of the film. Given that conjugated polymer films cast in different ways also show different nanometer-scale surface topographies, the question that arises is: What is the correlation between surface topography, local chain packing, and the local electronic properties of a conjugated polymer film? In this paper, we address this question using fluorescence near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM) to examine films of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) that were prepared in different ways.
