Water Rights As Contested Terrain: The Case Of Tenmile Creek, Oregon, Marcie L. Allen

This thesis examines the complex conflict over water rights at Tenmile Creek, located along the south central Oregon Coast. The research is an exploratory case study identifying the main motivations of actors, the constraints they faced, and the conditions that encouraged or dissuaded collaborative behavior.

The main objectives are (1) to refine the understanding of the relationship between societies and their physical environment in market societies that are both motivated to exploit and preserve natural resources and, (2) to explore the kinds of institutional arrangements that may be required to manage the water supply in a collaborative and sustainable manner. …

This exploratory study was undertaken to expand the knowledge of service providers working with children and families involved in child protection that are currently or have the possibility of developing a permanency plan for children in placement. The study intends to discover the effectiveness of concurrent planning as it pertains to family preservation. Six child protection social workers were interviewed using a structured interview schedule. The qualitative data was then examined to identify any prevailing similarities or themes that were identified between social workers employed in a county social service child protection setting. The functional causes of life history trade-offs have been a topic of interest to evolutionary biologists for over six decades. Our review of life history trade-offs discusses conceptual issues associated with physiological aspects of trade-offs, and it describes recent advances on this topic. We focus on studies of four model systems: wing polymorphic insects, Drosophila, lizards, and birds. The most significant recent advances have been: (a) incorporation of genetics in physiological studies of trade-offs, (b) integration of investigations of nutrient input with nutrient allocation, (c) development of more sophisticated models of resource acquisition and allocation, (d) a shift to more …

Oxygenated volatile organic species (oxygenates), including HCOOH, H₂CO, CH₃OH, HOCH₂CHO (hydroxyacetaldehyde), CH₃COOH, and C₆H₅OH, have recently been identified by Fourier transform infrared measurements as a significant component of the direct emissions from biomass combustion. These oxygenates have not generally been included in the hydrocarbon-based initial emission profiles used in previous photochemical simulations of biomass combustion smoke plumes. We explore the effects of oxygenates on this photochemistry by using an established initial emission hydrocarbon profile and comparing simulation results obtained both with and without addition of the above six …

We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will reintroduce whooping cranes (Grus aericana) into historic habitat in the eastern United States with the intent to establish a migratory flock that would summer and breed in Wisconsin, and winter in west-central Florida. We are designating this reintroduced population as a nonessential experimental population (NEP) according to section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (Act), as amended. The invention is directed to a novel compounds comprising 4-azidotetrafluoroaniline and the alkyl, acyl and sulfonamide derivatives thereof and to methods of making and using the same. The novel compounds are useful as a photoaffinity probe to study protein structure and function. Two methods for preparing 4-azidotetrafluoroaniline are disclosed, each employing a stable carbamate intermediate from which the 4-azidotetrafluoroaniline is derived.

Increased Plasma Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Concentrations In Prepubertal Gilts From Lines Selected For Increased Number Of Corpora Lutea, J. J. Ford, D. R. Zimmerman, T. H. Wise, K. A. Leymaster, R. K. Christenson

Plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) was evaluated in gilts from two studies in which ovulation rate was increased through direct selection for number of corpora lutea (CL) to determine whether selection for ovulation rate affected FSH secretion during prepubertal development. In the first study, 76 control and 110 selected gilts of University of Nebraska gene pool lines were bled twice during prepubertal development. Plasma FSH concentrations were greater (P < 0.05) at 53 (13.5%) and 75 (21.3%) d of age in selected than in control gilts. In the second study, 254 control gilts, 261 gilts from a line selected for ovulation rate, and 256 gilts from a line selected for uterine capacity were bled at three prepubertal ages. Plasma FSH was greater (P < 0.05), relative to controls, on d 34 (> 24%), 55 (> 13%), and 85 (> 10%) in White Composite gilts selected for either increased ovulation rate or for greater uterine capacity. This "marital presumption" permitted courts to assume a set of biological facts in the name of preserving the sanctity and stability of what was assumed to be the cornerstone of a healthy society — the traditional family of husband, wife and children. In the last decades of the 20th century, science developed paternity testing with results approaching certainty. Despite the availability of DNA testing, the marital presumption is still used in many courtrooms to answer the question of who is the legal father. This study was undertaken to gain a better understanding of how bodywork can facilitate in the healing process of those who have suffered an emotionally traumatic experience(s), and how bodywork affects Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. An individual with PTSD who has received Rolfing (a type of bodywork) took part in an unstructured interview with an emphasis on her life experiences. The interview was then transcribed and interpreted. She reported many benefits as a result of the Rolfing including being present in the moment and being able to see more options in stressful situations. These findings suggest that professionals …

Chronic Restraint Stress Enhances Radial Arm Maze Performance In Female Rats, Rachel E. Bowman, Mark C. Zrull, Victoria N. Luine

Effects of chronic restraint stress (21 and 28 days) on physiological and behavioral parameters in female rats were examined. Total (bound and free) and free corticosterone (CORT) levels were measured at different time points during the stress period. Higher total CORT levels were observed in stressed rats during the stress period but returned to baseline at 15 days poststress. Additionally, free CORT levels decreased across the stress period. Estrous cyclicity was monitored daily in all animals. Stress had no apparent effects on estrous cyclicity, in rats with either normal length or elongated estrous cycles, but stressed females gained less weight …

Aims: A rapid and simple method for enumerating uninjured and sublethally injured bacterial cells, the twofold dilution method (2FD), was developed and evaluated. Methods and Results: Following twofold serial dilution of samples in a 96 well microtiter plate, double strength selective broth or nonselective broth was added to each well. For resuscitation of heat-injured (55°C for 10 min) coliforms, the selective broth was added to the wells after 3 h preresuscitation time in buffered peptone water. The results of the 2FD were compared to plating methods for total and coliform plate counts from mixed cultures and beef carcass surface tissue …

This study seeks to review America's response to infant abandonment by using an historical analysis and a social policy framework to analyze the state and federal laws that are attempting to curtail abandonment. It surveyed 120 upper mid-west college students to learn their responses to unplanned pregnancy and their familiarity with the state's infant abandonment laws.

The results of historical analysis of infant abandonment provides an overview of mankind's social, economic, and political motivations. This exploratory qualitative study examines the impact of hypertechnical communications on parent-adolescent relations. Five families with adolescents responded with their stories regarding hypertechnical communications. A degree of parent-adolescent conflict is considered normative as it relates to adolescent autonomy development. This study sought to understand the impact of hypertechnical communications on the freedom of adolescents and any resulting conflict. Family systems and parenting have changed with the adaptation of hypertechnical communications. Although teachers in all 50 states are designated as mandated reporters of child maltreatment, concerns have been expressed regarding their overall knowledge for reporting child abuse and neglect. The purpose of the study is to explore elementary teachers' knowledge regarding Minnesota's mandatory reporting law, the Reporting of Maltreatment of Minors, Minnesota Statute 626.556. All full-time and part-time public school elementary teachers from a school district in Central Minnesota were surveyed (N=383). Of those surveyed, 225 (59%) agreed to participate in the study. The data was analyzed by univariate and bivariate analysis. The results indicate that almost all participants who perceived …
