Institutions of higher education that respond to the economic base in their region will remain competitive and be better positioned to obtain public funds and donor support. In addition to mandated program viability standards based on measures such as graduation rate, individual institutions and state coordinating boards can use ten-year occupational trend data to assess future program viability. A preliminary assessment of contraceptive use and availability in the Monteverde Zone using qualitative field methods. Recommendations for improved contraceptive practices are included. The research team had been informed that adolescent pregnancy and various reproductive health issues are important problems that need to be addressed in the Monteverde area. To research the topic of adolescent pregnancy, qualitative field methods were used to gather data. Ten structured in-depth interviews on issues surrounding adolescent pregnancy were conducted with various community members in the Monteverde Zone. In the traditional survey area (strata 1-18, 20-50, and 75-77), total duck abundance was 36.1 ± 0.6 [SE] million birds. This was 14% below (P< 0.001) last year’s estimate of 41.8 ± 0.7 million birds, but still 9% above the long-term (1955-2000) average (P < 0.001). Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) abundance was 7.9 ± 0.2 million, which is 17% below (P<0.001) the 2000 estimate of 9.5 ± 0.3 million and similar to the long-term average (P=0.08). Blue-winged teal (Anas discors) abundance was 5.8 ± 0.3 million, which was 23% below last year’s estimate of 7.4 ± 0.4 million (P=0.001), but 29% above the long-term average (P = 0.001). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has great potential as a tool for structural biology, a field in which there is increasing demand to characterize larger and more complex biomolecular systems. However, the poorly characterized silicon and silicon nitride probe tips currently employed in AFM limit its biological applications. Carbon nanotubes represent ideal AFM tip materials due to their small diameter, high aspect ratio, large Young’s modulus, mechanical robustness, well-defined structure, and unique chemical properties. Nanotube probes were first fabricated by manual assembly, but more recent methods based on chemical vapor deposition provide higher resolution probes and are geared towards mass production, …

A content analysis was conducted on of the public school experience of 3 youth from gay-straight alliance groups, who self identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual. The major themes found are the importance of caring and involved teachers, the positive experience of gay-straight alliance groups, and the affects of peer harassment. Implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.

In gradient descent learning algorithms such as error backpropagation, the learning rate parameter can have a significant effect on generalization accuracy. In particular, decreasing the learning rate below that which yields the fastest convergence can significantly improve generalization accuracy, especially on large, complex problems. The learning rate also directly affects training speed, but not necessarily in the way that many people expect. Many neural network practitioners currently attempt to use the largest learning rate that still allows for convergence, in order to improve training speed. However, a learning rate that is too large can be as slow as a learning …

Improving The Hopfield Network Through Beam Search, Tony R. Martinez, Xinchuan Zeng

In this paper we propose a beam search mechanism to improve the performance of the Hopfield network for solving optimization problems. The beam search readjusts the top M (M > 1) activated neurons to more similar activation levels in the early phase of relaxation, so that the network has the opportunity to explore more alternative, potentially better solutions. We evaluated this approach using a large number of simulations (20,000 for each parameter setting), based on 200 randomly generated city distributions of the 10-city traveling salesman problem. The High Plains aquifer underlies 174,000 square miles in parts of eight States and includes eight primary hydrogeologic units, including the well-known Ogallala Formation. The High Plains aquifer is an important resource, providing water for 27 percent of the Nation’s irrigated agricul¬tural lands in an otherwise dry landscape. Since the 1980’s there has been concern over the sustainability of the aquifer due to water-level declines caused by substantial pumping. Water quality of the aquifer is a more recent concern. As part of the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Water-Quality Assessment Program, historical water-quality data have been gathered for the High Plains …

Sedimentary greigite (Fe3S4) can form either by ''biologically controlled'' or by ''biologically induced mineralization'' (BCM and BIM, respectively). In order to identify the origin of magnetic Fe sulfides, we studied and compared the sizes and morphologies of greigite crystals produced by a magnetotactic microorganism (previously described and referred to as the ''many-celled magnetotactic prokaryote'', MMP) and Fe sulfides from two specimens of Miocene sedimentary rocks (from Łaka, in the foredeep of the Western Carpathians and from Michalovce, in the Transcarpathian Depression). Off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope is used to characterize the magnetic microstructure of magnetotactic bacteria. The practical details of the technique are illustrated through the examination of single cells of strains MV-1 and MS-1, which contain crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) that are ~50nm in size and are arranged in chains. Electron holography allows the magnetic domain structures within the nanocrystals to be visualized directly at close to the nanometer scale. The crystals are shown to be single magnetic domains. The magnetization directions of small crystals that would be superparamagnetic if they were isolated …

Factors Influencing Oviposition Among Pond-Breeding Amphibians: Exotic Vegetation, Oviposition Braces, And Cover, Catherine Mary Callison

I examined oviposition in four pond-breeding amphibians (northwestern salamander [Ambystoma gracile], long-toed salamander [Ambystoma macrodactylum], Pacific treefrog [Hyla regilla], northern red-legged frog [Rana aurora aurora]), at Burlington Bottoms, a lowland riverine site in northwestern Oregon, to determine whether differential use of native versus exotic plant substrates occurs. I found differential use in all four species, but use was inconsistent with the hypothesis that selection for native plants (or selection against exotic plants) was occurring. If selection was occurring, the pattern implied that reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea), a widespread exotic in this lowland system, was sometimes favored. However, inconsistent use of …

Dead trees, or snag , are used by primary cavity-nesting birds for nesting, foraging, and roosting and are essential habitat for the e species. Snags formed in beaver ponds due to flooded conditions are utilized by a variety of woodpecker species. In this study I quantified and compared snag density, size, decay characteristics, and excavations in beaver ponds and in forested riparian sites without beaver influence (reference sites) in the western Oregon Cascades. Beaver ponds were treated as a pooled group (n=8) and also categorized into old (n=5) and new (n=3) classes based on decay indicators. Reference sites (n=8) were …

An isolated DNA sequence which regulates the expression of a heterologous gene composed of a mouse whey acidic protein promoter having a length of greater than about 2.4 kb extending upstream from the unique KpnI site in the mouse whey acidic protein gene is disclosed. Specifically a mouse whey acidic protein promoter of about 4.1-4.2 kb in length extending upstream from the unique KpnI site is preferred. This mouse whey acid protein promoter is operably linked to a DNA sequence encoding a heterologous polypeptide and used to prepare transgenic non-human mammals expressing the heterologous polypeptide in their milk. This Article addresses the report by the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) concerning war crimes allegedly committed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during the conduct of its war with Yugoslavia. International law regarding the conduct of war, or jus in bello, governs what are popularly thought of as “war crimes.” This body of law is currently in flux; while the OTP is not in any sense a rule-making body, its actions may give some guidance as to the direction that the development of this body of law will …
