Small Satellite Conference

Every small-satellite enthusiast has hoped for the day when small satellites would gain the sophistication, political support and commercial viability to be used for main stream missions. The first phase of such a mission is currently being constructed by One Stop Satellite Solutions (OSSS) of Ogden, Utah and will launch May of 2002. The OS-2 payload will be delivered into a 650-km orbit using a Russian Dnepr launch vehicle furnished by the launch team of Kosmotraus and Thiokol. Aboard the OS-2 mission will be two satellites, which will demonstrate technical feasibility of the TropNet concept. TropNet is an equatorial LEO …

An Examination Of The Mitoura (Lycaenidae) In The Southeastern United States: With The Description Of A New Subspecies Of Mitoura Hesseli, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Four subspecies of Mitoura grynea occur in the United States east of the Mississippi River. The nominate subspecies occupies this entire area except for Florida and the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia. Mitoura g. grynea is usually associated with Juniperus virginiana. A neotype is designated for Lycus gryneus from Aiken County, South Carolina. Mitoura grynea smilacis is endemic to the southeastern coastal islands and coastal mainland from about Brunswick Georgia north to the Santee River delta of South Carolina. Smilacis’ range corresponds to that of Juniperus silicicola in that area. A neotype is designated for …

An Examination Of Southeastern U. S. Satyrium (Lycaenidae: Theclinae), Part Two: The Identification And Delimitation Of Nominate Satyrium Liparops And The Description Of A New Subspecies From West Central Peninsular Florida, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

The name Satyrium liparops liparops has traditionally been applied to all liparops populations from eastern Georgia southward. This tradition is shown to be in error. The type locality of nominate liparops is restricted by original description to Screven County, Georgia. A neotype is designated from Screven County and deposited in the Museum of the Hemispheres (MOTH) collection Goose Creek, South Carolina. The range of nominate liparops is projected to be from coastal South Carolina across the far southern United States (including the Florida panhandle) and into Texas. Function Of Escherichia Coli Biotin Carboxylase Requires Catalytic Activity Of Both Subunits Of The Homodimer, Kamala Janiyani, Tee Bordelon, Grover L. Waldrop, John E. Cronan

Biotin carboxylase catalyzes the ATP-dependent carboxylation of biotin and is one component of the multienzyme complex acetyl-CoA carboxylase that catalyzes the first committed step in fatty acid synthesis. The Escherichia coli biotin carboxylase is readily isolated from the other components of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase complex such that enzymatic activity is retained. The three-dimensional structure of biotin carboxylase, determined by x-ray crystallography, demonstrated that the enzyme is a homodimer consisting of two active sites in which each subunit contains a complete active site. To understand how each subunit contributes to the overall function of biotin carboxylase, we made hybrid molecules in …

Selenocysteine is a rare amino acid in protein that is encoded by UGA with the requirement of a downstream mRNA stem-loop structure, the selenocysteine insertion sequence element. To detect selenoproteins in Drosophila, the entire genome was analyzed with a novel program that searches for selenocysteine insertion sequence elements, followed by selenoprotein gene signature analyses. This computational screen and subsequent metabolic labeling with 75Se and characterization of selenoprotein mRNA expression resulted in identification of three selenoproteins: selenophosphate synthetase 2 and novel G-rich and BthD selenoproteins that had no homology to known proteins. A thiol/disulfide oxidoreductase component of the GSH system, glutaredoxin (Grx), is involved in the reduction of GSH-based mixed disulfides and participates in a variety of cellular redox pathways. A single cytosolic Grx (Grx1) was previously described in mammals. We now report identification and characterization of a second mammalian Grx, designated Grx2. Grx2 exhibited 36% identity with Grx1 and had a disulfide active center containing the Cys-Ser-Tyr-Cys motif. Grx2 was encoded in the genomes of mammals and birds and expressed in a variety of cell types. The gene for human Grx2 consisted of four exons and three introns, spanned 10 kilobase …

Four laboratory experiments on fresh, modern diatoms collected from lakes in the Northern Great Plains of North America were carried out to assess the effects of dissolution on diatom abundance and composition. Marked differences in mean dissolution susceptibility exist between species, despite sometimes significant intra- specific variation between heterovalves. Twenty-four taxa were ranked according to susceptibility to dissolution using an exponential decay model of valve abundance. This dissolution ranking was used to derive two weighted indices of sample preservation. A Dissertation On African American Male Youth Violence: "Trying To Kill The Part Of You That Isn’T Loved", Joy Degruy Leary

This dissertation is based on Sociocultural Theory, Social Learning Theory and Trauma Theory, as well as a new theoretical framework (Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome) which takes into account multigenerational trauma. Five research questions involving independent variables believed to predict violent behavior in African American male youth were investigated. The first three questions addressed stressors experienced by African Americans: violence witnessing, violence victimization, and daily urban hassles. The fourth and fifth questions concerned the sociocultural characteristics of racial socialization and prosocial attitudes toward respect. Participants were 200 African American male youth residing in inner Northeast Portland, Oregon who were recruited from …
