Spectral Response And Spatial Pattern Of Fraser Fir Mortality And Regeneration, Great Smoky Mountains, Usa, Thomas R. Allen

High elevation Fraser fir (Abies fraseri) forests of the Southern Appalachians have undergone widespread mortality since the introduction of the balsam woolly adelgid in the 1950s. Resulting changes in ecosystem pattern and process (e.g., stand dynamic processes) have greatly affected floral and faunal communities. In this project, we integrated field observations, geographic information system topographic models, and 1988–1998 satellite imagery to analyze spatial and temporal conditions of Fraser fir and spruce-fir ecosystems in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Characterization Of Transepithelial Potential Oscillations In The Drosophila Malpighian Tubule, Edward M. Blumenthal

The Malpighian tubule of Drosophila melanogaster is a useful model system for studying the regulation of epithelial ion transport. In acutely isolated tubules, the transepithelial potential (TEP) undergoes large oscillations in amplitude with a period of approximately 30s. The TEP oscillations are diminished by reductions in the peritubular chloride concentration in a manner consistent with their being caused by fluctuations in chloride conductance. The oscillations are eliminated by pretreating tubules with the calcium chelator BAPTA-AM, although removal of peritubular calcium has no effect, suggesting that the oscillations are a result of either the release of calcium from intracellular stores or …

Over the past several decades, physical therapists have demonstrated an increasing responsiveness to the profession's obligation to generate objective evidence for examination and intervention strategies employed in physical therapy practice. This trend is evident, not only in the increasing number of journals that are publishing physical therapy research, but in the growing sophistication of research design and analytic options used by investigators. At the same time, physical therapists are held increasingly accountable for adopting an evidence-based approach to practice. Motivation: Clustering algorithms are widely used m bioinformatics, having been applied to a range of problems from the analysis of gene expression to the building of phylogenetic trees. Biological data often describe parallel and spontaneous processes such as molecular interactions and genome evolution. To capture these features, we propose a new clustering algorithm that employs the concept of message passing. Methods: Inspired by a real-world situation in which people who have never met can form groups by exchanging messages, Message Passing Clustering (MPC) allows data objects to communicate with each other and produces clusters in parallel, thereby making the clustering …

Inflorescences of Xanthosoma undipes (Araceae) thermoregulate, heating to temperatures ranging from 36ºC-46°C. Scarab beetles in the genus Cyclocephala spp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), the pollinators of X. undipes, arrive at the inflorescence during heat production and remain for a period of two days, copulating and feeding. In this study I tested the hypothesis that thermogenesis is a mechanism by which to encourage pollinator copulation. Using an experimental design in which beetles were mated under varying temperature conditions to test for an optimal copulating temperature, I expected highest mating frequency to correspond to maximum inflorescence temperature. In Solid Waste of Northern Cook County v. United States Army Corps of Engineers, the Supreme Court found that the Migratory Bird Rule, promulgated by the Army Corps of Engineers, exceeded the authority delegated to the Corps by Congress under the Clean Water Act. In deciding this case on the basis of the plain language of the statute, the Court did not reach the issue of the constitutional limits of federal land use regulation under the authority of the Commerce Clause. This case note reviews that finding and the Court's historical rulings on Congress' exercise of its commerce power. In …

In many high technology industries, strategic alliances have become important for improving a firm's financial performance by providing knowledge that can be used to develop the capabilities needed to introduce new products. Therefore, researchers have examined those characteristics of alliances that can contribute to the performance of high technology companies. There is agreement that the structure and knowledge flows within alliances can affect a firm's innovativeness. The objective of this study was to develop an X-ray computed tomographic method for measuring pulmonary arterial dimensions and locations within the intact rat lung. Lungs were removed from rats and their pulmonary arterial trees were filled with perfluorooctyl bromide to enhance X-ray absorbance. The lungs were rotated within the cone of the X-ray beam projected from a microfocal X-ray source onto an image intensifier, and 360 images were obtained at 1° increments. The three-dimensional image volumes were reconstructed with isotropic resolution using a cone beam reconstruction algorithm. The vessel diameters were obtained by fitting a functional form to the …

Results from our laboratory have suggested a pathway involving angiotensin II type 1 (AT₁) receptors and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in angiogenesis induced by electrical stimulation. The present study investigated if similar mechanisms underlie the angiogenesis induced by short-term exercise training. Seven days before training and throughout the training period, male Sprague-Dawley rats received either captopril or losartan in their drinking water. Rats underwent a 3-day treadmill training protocol. The tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles were harvested under anesthesia and lightly fixed in formalin (vessel density) or frozen in liquid nitrogen (VEGF expression). Habitat Use, Population Density, And Home Range Of Elf Owls (Micrathene Whitneyi) At Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Texas, Christopher Michael Gamel, Timothy Brush

We collected data on the habitat use, home range size, and population density of the Elf Owl (Micrathene Whitneyi Idonea) in the Santa Ana National Wildlife refuge (SANWR) Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Fourteen nocturnal surveys in 1995 and 1996 indicated that Elf Owls used chaparral habitat (92%) more than riparian woodlands(8%). Habitats used had high foliage densities(greatest density = 2.5-3.0 m) with partial canopies (x = 3.8 +_ 0.36 m [+_SE] and semi-open understories (greatest density< 1 m). Unused chaparral habitat lacked high canopy coverage and had a denser understory, while riparian woodlands had greater canopyheights (• = 5.25 m) and open understories. Home range size determined by radiotelemetry averaged1.0.5+_0.33 ha (range = 0.24-2.60, N = 9). We estimated the maximum potential population size in SANWR to be 802 Elf Owls, assuming a home range size of 1.05 ha per breeding pair and saturation of preferred habitat.

Mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins play an essential role in DNA replication initiation. We have isolated a novel gene encoding an MCM-like protein from the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum using the vectorette technique. The gene has no introns and comprises an open reading frame encoding 1005 amino acid residues with a predicted Mr of 115 kDa. The encoded protein, termed PfMCM4, contains all conserved sequences in the MCM family and displays the highest homology to the Cdc54 (MCM4) of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, PfMCM4 possesses five unique amino acid inserts with sizes ranging from seven to 75 residues. Southern blotting of …

Evolutionary Polymorphic Neural Network (EPNN) is a novel approach to modeling chemical, biochemical and physical processes. This approach has its basis in modern artificial intelligence, especially neural networks and evolutionary computing. EPNN can perform networked symbolic regressions for input-output data, while providing information about both the structure and complexity of a process during its own evolution.

In this work three different processes are modeled: 1. A dynamic neutralization process. 2. An aqueous two-phase system. 3. Reduction of a biodegradation model. In all three cases, EPNN shows better or at least equal performances over published data than traditional thermodynamics /transport or …
