The Anchor, Volume 115.04: September 19, 2001, Hope College

The Anchor: 2001

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Distinct Mechanisms Regulate Slow-Muscle Development, Michael J.F. Barresi, Joel A. D'Angelo, L. Patricia Hernández, Stephen H. Devoto Sep 2001

Distinct Mechanisms Regulate Slow-Muscle Development, Michael J.F. Barresi, Joel A. D'Angelo, L. Patricia Hernández, Stephen H. Devoto

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Vertebrate muscle development begins with the patterning of the paraxial mesoderm by inductive signals from midline tissues [1, 2]. Subsequent myotome growth occurs by the addition of new muscle fibers. We show that in zebrafish new slow-muscle fibers are first added at the end of the segmentation period in growth zones near the dorsal and ventral extremes of the myotome, and this muscle growth continues into larval life. In marine teleosts, this mechanism of growth has been termed stratified hyperplasia [3]. We have tested whether these added fibers require an embryonic architecture of muscle fibers to support their development and …

Method For Removal Of Ammonia From Fly Ash, Jiann-Yang Hwang Sep 2001

Method For Removal Of Ammonia From Fly Ash, Jiann-Yang Hwang

Michigan Tech Patents

A method for removing ammonia and ammonia compounds from fly ash and other combustion by-products is provided. The method may be performed with raw or processed fly ash, or it may be performed in conjunction with a wet beneficiation process. The method involves mixing the ammonia-contaminated fly ash with water and then filtering and/or drying the solution to remove the ammonia and water. The method produces fly ash having an ammonia content of less than about 60-80 ppm, which allows the fly ash to be utilized in a number of applications.

Traditional Signal Pattern Recognition Versus Artificial Neural Networks For Nuclear Plant Diagnostics, Shahla Keyvan Sep 2001

Traditional Signal Pattern Recognition Versus Artificial Neural Networks For Nuclear Plant Diagnostics, Shahla Keyvan

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new tool based on a traditional noise analysis technique for monitoring reactor components' signal condition. It also presents the performance of artificial neural networks for pattern recognition to the same set of reactor signals and provides a comparison of these two techniques. Reactor pump signals from the Experimental Breeder Reactor (EBR-II) are utilized here. Collected signals such as pump power, pump speed, and pump pressure are obtained from already installed sensors in the reactor. The signals utilized are collected signals as well as generated signals simulating the pump shaft degradation progress. From the study of time …

The Chromokinesin Kid Is Necessary For Chromosome Arm Orientation And Oscillation, But Not Congression, On Mitotic Spindles, Aime A. Levesque, Duane A. Compton

Dartmouth Scholarship

Chromokinesins have been postulated to provide the polar ejection force needed for chromosome congression during mitosis. We have evaluated that possibility by monitoring chromosome movement in vertebrate-cultured cells using time-lapse differential interference contrast microscopy after microinjection with antibodies specific for the chromokinesin Kid. 17.5% of cells injected with Kid-specific antibodies have one or more chromosomes that remain closely opposed to a spindle pole and fail to enter anaphase. In contrast, 82.5% of injected cells align chromosomes in metaphase, progress to anaphase, and display chromosome velocities not significantly different from control cells. However, injected cells lack chromosome oscillations, and chromosome orientation …
