This edition of the Wooster Magazine was published in the Fall of 2000. This edition begins with a letter from the President's, R. Stanton Hales, desk regarding an $8 million gift from The Burton D. Morgan Foundation. This was the largest single gift in the history of the college at that time. The gift was used to create Burton D. Morgan Hall. "The Oak Grove", stories from around campus and beyond, includes stories about faculty beginning to transition to a new curriculum, the College switching to more "sophisticated" phones, students embracing Kittredge's no-fry zone, and staff members relocating campus wildlife. …

Low Proof Load Prediction Of Ultimate Strengths Of Fiberglass/Epoxy I-Beams Using Acoustic Emission, Edward C. Fatzinger Jr.

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Acoustic emission (AE) nondestructive testing was used to monitor fiberglass/epoxy I-beams. The experiment consisted of loading the I-beams in cantilever fashion with a hydraulic ram. While testing, AE waveforms were collected from the onset of loading to failure. After acquisition, the AE data from each test were filtered to include only data collected up to 50% of the theoretical ultimate load for further analysis.

A Kohonen self-organizing map was utilized to separate each individual data point (hit) into failure mechanism clusters. Then a multiple linear regression analysis was performed using the percentage of hits associated with each failure mechanism along …

High level ab initio calculations are carried out on diacetamide–X (DA–X) dimers, X=HCN, CH₃OH. The dimers are used as model systems to investigate the energetics and cooperative phenomomena in intermolecular three-center hydrogen-bond (H-bond) interactions relative to two-center H-bond interactions. The trans–trans conformer of diacetamide is chosen as a suitable model for intermolecular three-center H bonding where one H atom is interacting with two acceptor atoms. The proton–acceptor atoms are rigidly held in the same molecule. For both model systems, it is found that the calculated interaction energy per H bond is appreciably smaller in the three-center than in …

Much has been written about theory and practice in the law, and the tension between practitioners and theorists. Judges do not cite theoretical articles often; they rarely "apply" theories to particular cases. These arguments are not revisited. Instead the Article explores the working and interaction of theory and practice, practitioners and theorists. This Article starts with a story about solving a legal issue using our intellectual tools—theory, practice, and their progenies: experience and "gut." The parol evidence rule excludes extrinsic evidence of prior or contemporaneous understandings of an agreement when the parties have signed a document that purports to encompass their entire understanding. In theory, this rule is designed to add certainty to business transactions and to inhibit the introduction of unreliable evidence into the litigation system. But in practice, if we eliminate the introduction of precontractual representations and understandings from the dispute resolution process, we create a safe harbor for unethical business practices in the early stages of contract formation. Sensor-Assisted Video Mosaicing For Seafloor Mapping, Yuri Rzhanov, Randy G. Cutter Jr., Lloyd C. Huff

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

This paper discusses a proposed processing technique for combining video imagery with auxiliary sensor information. The latter greatly simplifies image processing by reducing complexity of the transformation model. The mosaics produced by this technique are adequate for many applications, in particular habitat mapping. The algorithm is demonstrated through simulations and hardware configuration is described.

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The paper provides an overview of the types of economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of the US domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed in the paper are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a 'science-based' regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The growth, condition, and mortality of black crappie, bluegill, and yellow perch were measured in 30 Nebraska Sand Hills lakes (1998, 1999) to determine the value of these parameters in these fish populations compared to other Great Plains populations. Growth was variable for all three fish species, but similar to or higher than populations in other midwestern states. Bluegill condition, as measured by mean relative weight, ranged from 115 to 123, indicating these populations were in very good condition. Mean relative weight by length for black crappie ranged from 94 to 114, but only 83 to 95 for yellow perch. …

This well-researched and deeply warm series of essays is intended to acquaint readers with twentieth-century Indian grandmothers as familial bridges between past cultural embeddedness and an increasingly dismembered culture stretched from its roots in myth and practice. The essays range from sociological monographs replete with statistics to intimate first-hand interpretive accounts from the grandmothers themselves. The historical, geographic, and psychological breadth of the vignettes assures their appeal to a wide range of scholars and ethno-elderphiles.

In the sixteen-year history of the Honors Program at Coastal Carolina University, some three hundred students have completed the program. We have graduated only two fine arts majors, and we currently have a student who is double majoring in art and marine science. Most of our students are science majors. In order to be invited into the honors program, students have to be excellent in verbal and analytical skills, but research on multiple intelligences (Gardner, Multiple) has shown us that those are only two of many ways to make sense of the world. This enthusiastic conservationist chronicles the arrival and expansion of many keystone non-indigenous species into North America and Hawaii. A wealth of knowledge is pulled together to provide an overview of the impacts of invasive plants and animals on regional ecosystems. Alien Species should be required reading for natural resource managers.

The author provides regional, biotic, theoretical, and policy perspectives on invasive species and discusses key invasive plants and animals and their known impacts within ten regions. This is the most extensive and documented part of the volume and provides powerful testimony regarding the magnitude of the problem.
