About Art, Baruch Blich Sep 2001

About Art, Baruch Blich

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article, "About Art," Baruch Blich investigates why is art -- and especially modern art -- so difficult to understand? Why do art objects raise questions as to their status? Why scrutinizing art involves semiotics, philosophy of language, linguistics, epistemology, ontology, and even metaphysics? Why art is interpreted by psychoanalysis as well as by behaviorism and psychology of perception? What anthropology and sociology have to do with art and why do we witness art debated in the courtroom concerning copyright issues? In short -- what makes art a crossroad for many and sometimes conflicting disciplines? Is there something in …

Crimes Against Children By Babysitters., David Finkelhor, Richard Ormrod

Crimes Against Children Research Center

Presents information on the frequency and nature of crimes committed against children by babysitters. As part of OJJDP's Crimes Against Children Series, the Bulletin draws on the FBI's National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to examine victim and offender characteristics, including gender, age, type of injury, and victim-offender relationship. The Bulletin also presents an overview of how NIBRS works to collect a wide range of criminal information for a variety of offenses. The Bulletin concludes by examining the implications of NIBRS data, particularly in regard to the severity of threat posed to children by babysitters.

The Hart-Rudman Commission And The Homeland Defense, Ian Roxborough Dr. Sep 2001

The Hart-Rudman Commission And The Homeland Defense, Ian Roxborough Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

With the exception of attacks by ballistic missiles, the continental United States was long held to be virtually immune from attack. For Americans, wars were something that took place in other countries. In the future, that may not hold. But while strategic thinkers agree that homeland defense needs greater attention, there is less consensus on the precise nature of the threat. The author disagrees with the commonly-held assumption that the main threat to the American homeland will come from terrorism inspired by U.S. leadership of globalization. He contends that the architects of the American strategy for homeland defense need a …

Invited Synthesis Paper: Principles And Practices For Managing Rangeland Invasive Plants, Robert A. Masters, Roger Sheley Sep 2001

Invited Synthesis Paper: Principles And Practices For Managing Rangeland Invasive Plants, Robert A. Masters, Roger Sheley

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Invasive plants reduce the capacity of ecosystems to provide goods and services required by society, alter ecological processes, and can displace desirable species. They can reduce wildlife habitat quality, riparian area integrity, rangeland economic value, and enterprise net returns. The invasion process is regulated by characteristics of the invading plant and the community being invaded. The presence and spread of invasive plants is often symptomatic of underlying management problems that must be corrected before acceptable, long-term rangeland improvement can be achieved. Disturbance appears to be important early in the invasion process because it creates vacant niches that alien plants can …

Impacts Of Residential Relocation On Stress, Coping And Quality Of Life Among Older Persons In Hong Kong, Siu Pan, Benny Chan Sep 2001

Impacts Of Residential Relocation On Stress, Coping And Quality Of Life Among Older Persons In Hong Kong, Siu Pan, Benny Chan

Lingnan Theses

Residential relocation could potentially be injurious to older persons. Indeed, much of the research literature in Western societies points out that involuntary residential relocation may exert undesirable impacts on older persons’ lives. Those impacts could be even greater if the relocation was forced upon the individual one person. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the impacts of involuntary residential relocation on older persons’ quality of life, stress and coping in Hong Kong. From a review of the literature, it was hypothesized that there will be perceived stress during and after the process of residential relocation, and satisfaction …

Need To Update Your Information Technology? Try Service Learning, Robin A. Alexander Sep 2001

Need To Update Your Information Technology? Try Service Learning, Robin A. Alexander

Partnerships/Community

While the need for information in the nonprofit sector is great, shortages of time, staff, money, and expertise make it hard to use information technology effectively. The result is often a vicious cycle in which staff time is spent compiling information manually when a simple database could dramatically speed the process. But there's no time to create it.

The Transition From Afdc To Prwora In Florida; Perceptions Of The Role Of Case Manager In Welfare Reform, Adela Beckerman, Leonard Fontana Sep 2001

The Transition From Afdc To Prwora In Florida; Perceptions Of The Role Of Case Manager In Welfare Reform, Adela Beckerman, Leonard Fontana

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Welfare reform was implemented in Florida with the passage of WAGES. WAGES' emphasis on support services in preparation for employment portends to be a radical transformation of the "eligibility compliance" organizational culture that had developed under AFDC. Interviews with welfare staff focused on whether WAGES' offices were able to develop the organizational culture and methods of frontline practice needed to implement the goals of welfare reform legislation. The interviews indicate an emerging organizational culture in which case managers readily identify with the mantra of welfare reform. The interviews also indicate a discrepancy between the importance of the case manager role …

Assets, Future Orientation, And Well-Being: Exploring And Extending Sherraden's Framework, Marcia Shobe, Deborah Page-Adams Sep 2001

Assets, Future Orientation, And Well-Being: Exploring And Extending Sherraden's Framework, Marcia Shobe, Deborah Page-Adams

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Reducing the incidence and impact of poverty has been central to social work practice since the birth of the profession (Addams, 1910; Franklin, 1986). The prevailing anti-poverty paradigm holds that well-being is almost exclusively dependent upon income. Social work scholar and educator, Michael Sherraden (1988; 1991) suggests a new anti-poverty paradigm whereby combined income and asset building initiatives may improve the well-being of poor households. Sherraden (1991) suggests that assets have positive effects on well-being, including future orientation. The extended conceptual framework suggested here further specifies that future orientation has a direct role in its relationship with assets and well-being.

Mental Health Needs Of Tanf Recipients, Layne K. Stromwall Sep 2001

Mental Health Needs Of Tanf Recipients, Layne K. Stromwall

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper reports findings of a study of female Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) and non-recipients ages 18-40, receiving behavioral health services in the rural Southwest in 1998-9. TANF recipients (N = 119) were more likely to be seriously mentally ill than non-recipients (N = 370), suggesting that a subgroup of TANF recipients may face significant barriers to employment given the new TANF regulations. The author argues that responsibility for recognizing the needs of TANF recipients for behavioral health services is shared by both the public welfare and behavioral health systems. Suggestions for meeting this challenge in both systems …

The Other Side Of The Desk: Former Welfare Recipients Who Now Work For "The System.", Cheryl Cheek, Kathleen W. Piercy Sep 2001

The Other Side Of The Desk: Former Welfare Recipients Who Now Work For "The System.", Cheryl Cheek, Kathleen W. Piercy

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Within the framework of identity theory, twenty female former welfare recipients who are currently human service workers discussed how their past experiences affected current service provision and their views of the welfare system. Semi-structured interviews were used, and data were coded and analyzed using the multistage process designed by McCracken (1988) for long interviews. Respondents discussed how their experiences made them more empathetic towards their clients and gave them insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the past and present welfare systems. Results show support for identity theory by showing how past identities affect present ones.

Private Food Assistance In A Small Metropolitan Area: Urban Resources And Rural Needs, Joseph J. Molnar, Patricia A. Duffy, Latoya Claxton, Conner Bailey Sep 2001

Private Food Assistance In A Small Metropolitan Area: Urban Resources And Rural Needs, Joseph J. Molnar, Patricia A. Duffy, Latoya Claxton, Conner Bailey

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Food banks and other private feeding programs have become an institutionalized component of the social welfare system in over 190 urban areas in the U.S. More recently, private food assistance has gained importance in rural areas as well. The density and capacity of agencies to serve the poor is higher in urban areas than in sparsely populated rural locales where distance and dispersal tend to be barriers to supplying and accessing donated food. Rural food distribution strategies thus must be qualitatively different than those in larger communities, because of the smaller-scale, more informal distributional system. Little is known about how …

Affirmative Action: An Analysis Of Aa/Eeo Officers' Perceptions Of Campus Policies In The University Of Missouri System, Shawn Woodhouse Sep 2001

Affirmative Action: An Analysis Of Aa/Eeo Officers' Perceptions Of Campus Policies In The University Of Missouri System, Shawn Woodhouse

The Qualitative Report

This study sought to explore the perceptions of affirmative action officers in the University of Missouri System. Each affirmative action officer on the four University of Missouri campuses participated in an electronic or personal interview in which they responded to eight questions regarding the implementation of affirmative action policies on their respective campuses. A comparison of the officer responses revealed that each university complies with federal affirmative action guidelines, but some of the institutions in the system developed additional strategies to attract minority faculty candidates.
