Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare
Through The Looking Glass Of Teaching: The Death Penalty And The Political Culture Of Detached Passions, Adelaide H. Villmoare
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
Today, despite daily struggles in courtrooms against capital punishment, there appears little legal room to challenge the death penalty. Most constitutional questions appear "settled. Given the present composition of the Supreme Court, there is scant expectation of any major reversals. Also, the Court's future is to be decided by a President who was governor of a state that has executed more people since 1976 than any other state in the nation. While abolitionist scholars and activists continue to raise constitutional issues, the most dramatic events challenging the death penalty have occurred in the larger political arena outside the courtroom. The …
Migration And Radicalization: Global Futures, Gabriel Rubin
Migration And Radicalization: Global Futures, Gabriel Rubin
Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This book explores the connections between migration and terrorism and extrapolates, with the help of current research and case studies, what the future may hold for both issues. Migration and Radicalization: Global Futures looks at how migrants and terrorists have both been treated as Others outside the body politic, how growing migrant flows borne of a rickety state system cause both natives and migrants to turn violent, and how terrorist radicalization and tensions between natives and migrants can be reduced. As he contemplates potential global futures in the light of migration and radicalization, Gabriel Rubin charts a course between contemporary …

Minnie Low was a leader among the Chicago women who worked in social reform and social service between 1890 and 1920. Low was born in New York City, the second child of six in a Jewish family. Her parents' names, occupations, and country of birth are unknown. When she was ten years old, the family moved to Chicago, where she finished elementary school. She attended South Division High School for less than a year and left school because she was in poor health.
Low's first recorded job was as HANNAH SOLOMON's secretary, when Solomon was organizing the Jewish Women's Congress …

Risk, Trust, And Technology In The Aftermath Of The Terrorist Attacks Of September 11, 2001., Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The fatal facts of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, are now well known to us, and they will undoubtedly form an indelible chapter in the national history of the United States .... During the past few days, each of us has tried to understand this heinous event, to come to grips with it emotionally, and each of us has responded in understandably human ways: with disbelief, despair, and great sadness. Collectively, we empathize with grieving families personally unknown to us, we offer prayers for our nation's leaders, and we watch with hope and admiration as the rescue and recovery teams continue …
The Effects Of A High-Risk Environment On The Sexual Victimization Of Homeless And Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Ana Mari Cauce
The Effects Of A High-Risk Environment On The Sexual Victimization Of Homeless And Runaway Youth, Kimberly A. Tyler, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Ana Mari Cauce
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Based on the structural-choice theory of victimization, the current study examines the effects of a high-risk environment on the sexual victimization of 311 homeless and runaway youth. Results from logistic regression revealed that survival sex, gender, and physical appearance were significantly associated with sexual victimization. Results from a series of interactions also revealed that the effects of deviant behaviors on sexual victimization varied by gender and age. Although males and females engaged in similar activities, young women were more likely to be victims of sexual assault. These findings suggest that engaging in high-risk behaviors predispose some people to greater risks …
The Sex Discrimination Argument In Gay Rights Cases, Nan D. Hunter
The Sex Discrimination Argument In Gay Rights Cases, Nan D. Hunter
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The argument that laws that discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation in fact discriminate on the basis of sex is not new. Advocates have been pressing this claim for almost thirty years. Simply put, the argument is that a statute that bars a sexual relationship between two women or two men discriminates on the basis of sex because either partner could have had the same relationship with a person of the opposite sex.
Can They Do That? Legal Ethics In Popular Culture: Of Characters And Acts, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Can They Do That? Legal Ethics In Popular Culture: Of Characters And Acts, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This Essay describes the depiction of modern lawyers' professional ethics in literature, films, and television, and distinguishes between personal and professional character and specific acts. Depictions of lawyers in modern popular culture are more complex and nuanced than older treatments and allow law students, lawyers, and legal academics an opportunity to examine both ethical rule violations and "micro" behavioral choices, as well as character and more "macro" professional career choices and philosophies in a variety of contexts and serialized plot, treatments. Treatments of professional ethics in more recent popular culture are also contrasted to more literary examinations of both lawyers' …
Aha? Is Creativity Possible In Legal Problem Solving And Teachable In Legal Education?, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Aha? Is Creativity Possible In Legal Problem Solving And Teachable In Legal Education?, Carrie Menkel-Meadow
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
This article continues and expands on my earlier project of seeking to describe how legal negotiation should be understood conceptually and undertaken behaviorally to produce better solutions to legal problems. As structured problem solving requires interests, needs and objectives identification, so too must creative solution seeking have its structure and elements in order to be effectively taught. Because research and teaching about creativity and how we think has expanded greatly since modern legal negotiation theory has been developed, it is now especially appropriate to examine how we might harness this new learning to how we might examine and teach legal …
Constitution-Talk And Justice-Talk, Mark V. Tushnet
Constitution-Talk And Justice-Talk, Mark V. Tushnet
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Inside the courts, one might distinguish between constitution-talk and justice-talk on the ground that the former, but not the latter, results in enforceable legal judgments. So, inside the courts, we might interpret the Constitution with justice in mind, but what we do is produce legally enforceable judgments. Outside the courts, however, it might seem that all we do is interpret and talk. It is not immediately obvious that cloaking justice-talk as constitution-talk outside the courts has much rhetorical force. As I will argue, the fact that invoking the Constitution outside the courts, in the course of discussing justice, does have …
Legal Scholarship As A Vocation, David Luban
Legal Scholarship As A Vocation, David Luban
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Law professors occupy a twin role as scholars and (most of them, at any rate) as lawyers. Deborah Rhode has pointed out, in her contribution to this symposium, that the lawyer role of the professor carries with it some frequently overlooked obligations, specifically the obligation to perform pro bono service. I agree with her, and have ventured similar arguments myself. Here I will address the more purely theoretical side of the legal scholar's vocation. The text I will take for my sermon is the famous speech on the scholar's role that Max Weber delivered to a student audience eighty years …

Program Evaluation Principles & Practices, Northwest Health Foundation
Evaluation/Reflection
This handbook is provided by the Northwest Health Foundation as a framework for community organizations to use to evaluate and understand the effectiveness of their programs. It provides an overview of basic program evaluation principles and practices, and offers an approach to evaluation that will assist organizations in documenting their work -for themselves, for funders, and for others who are interested in issues of program impact and outcomes. The handbook is designed to complement the content of a Foundation-sponsored workshop on program evaluation, and can be used as a "stand-alone" guide for evaluation design and implementation.

A Case Study Of Third World Development Projects Developed And Implemented By The Non-Governmental Organization: Volunteers In Technical Assistance (Vita)., Francis Rao Eddu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Voluntary sector, as a segment of civil society, emerged as an important ally for most of the national governments in the North and the South to supplement the governments' programs. Most of the voluntary sector activities are performed by special agencies known as non-governmental or private voluntary organizations (NGOs). They are unique and empirical studies have indicated they are successful due to innovative, people-centered activities. This dissertation studied the activities of an individual non-governmental organization, Volunteers in Technical Assistance (VITA), based in Arlington, Virginia, to be snapshots of programs involving the cooperation of Northern and Southern societies, with a purpose …

Evangelizing The Secular-Minded: A Training Seminar For The University Seventh-Day Adventist Church In East Lansing, Michigan, Roy Anthony Castelbuono
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Topic
Today in many ways our world has been unified, not by a political empire but by a way of thinking. People today find common ground in a shared experience of living guided by a set of values that spans the divide of culture, language, and history. The process of this transformation is best described by the term “secularization.” Secularization best describes the far-reaching changes we find in our communities and in our personal lives, and is one of the greatest challenges the Seventh-day Adventist Church faces as we begin the twenty-first century.

A Program To Improve Bible Study And Prayer In The Humboldt Park Hispanic Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Julio I. Juarez
A Program To Improve Bible Study And Prayer In The Humboldt Park Hispanic Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Julio I. Juarez
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
A survey conducted in the Humboldt Park Hispanic SDA church (HPHC) indicated that its members, like many others in our post-modern society, have neglected personal Bible study (PBS) and prayer. The results of this were evident in many aspects of their lives.
Method
This problem was brought to the attention of church leaders (elders and the church board). Consequently, a strategy was developed for involving all members in a week of prayer and seminars centered around personal Bible study and prayer. The seminars were based on a review of related literature. A survey was conducted before and after the …
A Seminar On Reaching The Secular Mind For Members And Guests Of The Hickory Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Kenneth J. Ford
A Seminar On Reaching The Secular Mind For Members And Guests Of The Hickory Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Kenneth J. Ford
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Western civilization is now pre- or post-Christian. Secularism has entrenched itself in our culture. Many churches are still utilizing mostly antiquated methods of reaching a Christian culture. We need to discover methods to engage the twenty-first-century secular mind.
Method
This report is outlined in the following way. It gives a brief overview of secularism by defining and then tracing its origin and development. Then it gives an overview of biblical, SDA, and selected evangelical literature on reaching the secular mind. A six-session seminar was formulated utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint, to be conducted sometime in the near future.
Results

A Strategy For Reaching Secular People, Ernan Alpin Norman
A Strategy For Reaching Secular People, Ernan Alpin Norman
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem
Secularization is a process that has effected and continues to effect massive changes in the cultural, social, and religious experience of many people. It is characterized by a loss of the influence of religion on society’s institutions and peoples. It came about when the scientific method became the principal means of discovering truth, while the biblical and theological perspectives became increasingly sidelined. People have become increasingly secular in their thinking, and many currently view the church as archaic, irrelevant, and boring. This presents a problem for the church and its mission in our contemporary society. Because of the lack …

An Analysis Of Service Sector Growth Effects On Income Inequality A Comparison Model Of Metropolitan And Non-Metropolitan Areas Of The Appalachia., Cheryl Lynne Peskar-Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
It is very difficult to find regional economic restructuring studies that examine economic well-being by analyzing the effects of service sector growth on income inequality. This study is a regional economic restructuring analysis. Through the use of county level data of 399 Appalachian Counties this study produced a comparison model of metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. The main goal of my thesis was to evaluate the growing economic differences in income potentials that have resulted in new spatial inequalities in the United States. By regressing income inequality (GINI INDEX) against service sector growth this study was able to support earlier studies …

Host Residents' Support Of The Summer 1996 Olympic Games, Joel L. Frater, Brian Mihalik
Visions in Leisure and Business
Hallmark or mega-events have been widely hailed as opportunities to enhance the awareness and appeal of tourist destinations. Because hallmark or mega events such as the Olympic games hold the market potential for national and international tourism development, studies of host residents' support of the Olympic games hold special significance. The purpose of this study was to examine Atlanta, residents on their perceptions of the State of Georgia hosting the 1996 Olympic games. Pre and post Olympic comparisons of residents showed strong support for Georgia hosting the Olympic games, limited change is willingness to attend Olympic events, and statistically significant …
Tourist Shopping Activities And Development Of Travel Sophistication, Russell K. Smith, Lorene S. Olson
Tourist Shopping Activities And Development Of Travel Sophistication, Russell K. Smith, Lorene S. Olson
Visions in Leisure and Business
An ethnographic research approach was used to investigate shopping and consumption behavior of international tourists. This research informed a model that positions a tourist's market-place activity as an evolving process that parallels and supports their advance in travel sophistication. The model illustrates that shopping and consumption may originate as a leisure-recreational pursuit for tourists but is transformed into a learning activity that facilitates their assimilation of a host culture. This, in turn, plays an important role in the tourist's development of travel self-efficacy, as well as their motivation for return trips.
