Media Images And Women’S Self-Evaluations: Social Context And Importance Of Attractiveness As Moderators, Donna Henderson-King, Eaaron Henderson-King, Lisa Hoffmann

Peer Reviewed Articles

The current research examines the effects of exposure to ideal images on women’s self-evaluations, taking into account the moderating influence of social contextual and individual difference factors. In Study 1, women were exposed to either ideal images of women or neutral images. Participants viewed these images in a context in which (a) men were not present, (b) men were present, or (c) men were present and made comments about some of the images. Results indicated that participants’ weight esteem was negatively affected in the ideal image/men present condition but that those in the ideal image/men comment condition actually exhibited higher …

Service Learning: Discovering Effective Communication Strategies By Emphasizing The Community's Perspective, Elizabeth Oppe

Thesis, Dissertations, Student Creative Activity, and Scholarship

Service learning is a broadly defined term that may encompass a spectrum of projects and course work ranging from acts of charity to activism for social change. "The aim of service learning is always to heighten awareness in our communities that we have the capacity to both learn from and serve each other... and work toward a more just and egalitarian society" (bttp://www.invcol.pdx.edulic.htm). Another description of service learning from Brevard Community College's The Power (1994) explains that, for many community organizations, students augment service delivery, meet crucial human needs, and provide a basis for future citizen support. The Power depicts …

馬克思主義概念翻譯在中國1900-1949, Yongye Xiao Nov 2001

馬克思主義概念翻譯在中國1900-1949, Yongye Xiao

Lingnan Theses

Actions Speak Louder: Women In Caribbean Documentaries Of Everyday Life, Ian Craig Nov 2001

Actions Speak Louder: Women In Caribbean Documentaries Of Everyday Life, Ian Craig

Journal of International Women's Studies

Introduction:

This paper focuses particularly on two recent documentaries of everyday life featuring Haitian women, Claudette Coulanges’s Chercher la vie and Rigoberto López’s Puerto Príncipe mío. The contribution of these works to the existing corpus of documentaries on Haiti is assessed. Gender differences in patterns of discourse and activity are analysed in order to clarify the social situation of women in contemporary Port-au-Prince. The films corroborate other cited evidence that women are the backbone of Haitian daily life, sustaining activity in market places, the factory floor and the home. However, their discourse and activities suggest that their constant struggle …

Building The Clinton Legacy Through Frame Alignment, Roberta L. Coles Nov 2001

Building The Clinton Legacy Through Frame Alignment, Roberta L. Coles

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines Clinton’s rhetorical strategy for creating a legacy in light of the imminent end of his second and final term as president. By examining Clinton’s public discourse from 1997 to 1999, with special attention to the period from September 1998 to June 1999, this article argues that Clinton used the frame of his race initiative to centripetally incorporate varied events and policies to redefine and bolster his legacy in the aftermath of scandal and political polarity. Specifically, President Clinton, with an eye on the legacy of the president and the identity of the Democratic Party, gathered the war …

Factors Leading To Giving By Known Catholic Donors, Katherine A. King Nov 2001

Factors Leading To Giving By Known Catholic Donors, Katherine A. King

Master's Theses

The much-publicized low-level giving of Catholic donors versus other denominations has been the source of much debate and a rich topic for many research studies and reports, especially within the last 10 years. The major focus of this current study was to show that Catholics are indeed generous and to seek factors that lead to their giving. The positive aspects of Catholic generosity were sought, rather than focusing on negative factors serving as barriers to giving.

A self-administered questionnaire was sent to 208 known Catholic donors of the Diocese of Oakland in California during its Annual Bishop's Appeal. Donors who …

Deviant Behavior And Victimization Among Homeless And Runaway Adolescents, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt, Kevin A. Yoder, Ana Mari Cauce, Matt Paradise

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This study used a high-risk population of runaway and homeless adolescents to investigate the effects of history of caretaker abuse and deviant subsistence strategies on victimization among adolescents. Based on a multisite sample of 974 homeless and runaway adolescents, logistic regression models were used first to examine factors predicting involvement in sexual and nonsexual deviant subsistence strategies and then to investigate the effects of deviant subsistence strategies on physical and sexual victimization when adolescents were on the streets. Results indicated that when controlling for all other factors, including histories of physical and sexual maltreatment in families of origin, street behaviors, …

The Unique Challenges And Experiences Of African¬-American Women Academicians At Predominantly White Institutions, Gary K. Perry

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

This session addresses the unique challenges of African-American women academicians at predominantly white institutions. Learning Across Cultures: How Minority Students Construct Identities That Foster Academic Success, Maryjo Benton Lee Oct 2001

Learning Across Cultures: How Minority Students Construct Identities That Foster Academic Success, Maryjo Benton Lee

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

In China, successful minority students are those who construct “achievement-oriented selves." Through interaction with significant others, these students develop perspectives of themselves as "successes." This, in turn, makes academic achievement possible. The "identity work" of Chinese ethnic students can serve as a model for those involved with minority education in the U.S.

The Recruitment And Retention Of Students Of Color At Private Institutions, Anthony Cortese

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

This session presents a longitudinal study of recruitment and retention of students of color at a predominantly white university in the American Southwest. The institution was able to increase minority student enrollment 14 percent in fewer than ten years. This was accomplished through the careful development, implementation and evaluation of a policy designed to recruit and retain minority students. The specifics of this policy and how it may be used as a model for other predominantly white institutions are discussed.

Plantation Mythology: Black Women In Academia, S. Malone-Hawkins Ph.D., Erma J. Lawson Ph.D.

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

This article presents the process and findings of a study to establish the relativity of plantation mythology to the institution of higher learning. The method employed is a comparative personal history of a twenty-year period using an expert panel approach. A ten person expert panel of women of color was identified to generate a depiction of the conterminous experiences on the plantation. While we will not use a specific time frame, we will, however, analyze time and place similarities.

Philly Hoop Dreams: The Social Organization Of Black Basketball In Philadelphia, Scott N. Brooks

Different Perspectives on Majority Rules: 6th Annual National Conference (2001)

A study of basketball in Philadelphia suggests that players are made, not born and that success is not based solely upon the efforts of an individual. Rather, success is heavily influenced by the operations of a local social network.
