Social Studies Ambassadors To People’S Republic Of China., Ronald G. Helms Ph.D.

Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff

From childhood to present, I have been fascinated with China and with the Chinese. This book will report some events of my leadership of a PEOPLE TO PEOPLE Ambassador program to China. Winter, spring, and fall had served as a time of preparation for this great Chinese adventure. As a forty-five-year veteran of the International Sister to Sister Program and as a veteran foreign traveler and veteran delegation leader, I was delighted to lead a delegation to China.

Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns Jan 2001

Public Sphere In Cyberspace?, Mark D. Johns

Iowa Journal of Communication

According to Jurgen Habermas, a public sphere is a site where individuals come together to freely and openly express their opinions regarding matters of common interest. Informed by Habermas' discussion, the author investigated the social farms generated in computer-mediated communication and examined whether the social structures in cyberspace are conducive to the formation of a public sphere. Communication among the members of three Internet newsgroups were examined to locate the formal features of the social relationships constructed in this cyberspace. The conclusion is that while a public sphere may be possible, cyberspace often falls short of fulfilling its potential for …

Ecuador: Use Commercial Marketing To Increase Sustainability, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

Many nongovernmental organizations sell contraceptives through retail outlets to generate income and expand access to these products. In 1998 Centro Médico de Orientación y Planifación Familiar (CEMOPLAF) employed 25 sales agents in 14 cities throughout Ecuador. These agents sold products, including contraceptive methods and home pregnancy tests, to pharmacies, physicians, other distributors, and nontraditional outlets. Contraceptive sales were CEMOPLAF’s largest source of revenue in 1997. Sales had grown rapidly during 1996–97, but CEMOPLAF managers did not know whether product sales were profitable. With support from the Population Council and Family Health International, CEMOPLAF made a detailed analysis of product sales …

Exploring 1670 Charles Towne: 38ch1a/B, Final Archaeology Report, Michael J. Stoner, Stanley South

Research Manuscript Series

The Charles Towne Archaeological Project of 2000/2001 was designed to discover evidence for the remains of the 1670 Charles Towne settlement. The investigation first used a sampling method called shovel testing to locate concentrations of seventeenth-century artifacts in the northernmost portion of the fortified area of the settlement. Once located, the project began to open a larger block of excavation in the vicinity of this concentration. This, the first of two excavation blocks, ultimately included 65 ten-foot squares and the excavation of hundreds of features. This strategy led to the discovery of an earthfast "lodging", which was bordered by a …

Gender Dan Politik : Kajian Kes Ke Atas Wanita Umno Dan Pas Di Terengganu Dan Selangor, Zaireeni Azmi

Student Works (2000-2009)

The achievement and glory of Malay women of high rank have been recorded in history and has a profound impact to our society today. Great respect was shown for their charisma and capability. Women's increasing participation in politics is widely acknowledged but there is little recognition that the changes are far more comprehensive than that. Women still occupy an inferior positions in politics. Thus, this thesis will deal with three main hypotheses that are; firstly, there is a gender discrimination in politics to an extent that it hinders the active participation of women in general. Secondly, the non-equality in gender …

Population Characteristics And Sampling Methods Of Catfish For The James And Big Sioux Rivers, John E. Aterburn Jan 2001

Population Characteristics And Sampling Methods Of Catfish For The James And Big Sioux Rivers, John E. Aterburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Concerns about the sustainability of catfish populations that produce large fish have increased because of abundant media images of large catfish and improvements in specialized fishing equipment. This study will help biologists address these concerns by providing important information about the channel catfish lctalurus punctarus and flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris populations of the James and Big Sioux rivers and by assessing the effectiveness of various gears used to sample catfish. I compared the number of channel catfish and flathead catfish caught on trotlines by riverine habitat type, hook type, and bait type along with electrofishing and different hoop net combinations. …

Research For Change: Young People, Youth Crime And The Use Of Custody On Teesside, Keith Munroe

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This Action Research study was established in 1997 by the Society because of our concerns about the sharp increase in the use of custody for chi ldren and young people aged under 18 in England and Wales since 1992. Teesside was selected as the site for the enquiry because the local Courts have an established pattern of using high levels of custody for juveniles. The research also took place during a period when the Youth Justice Process in England and Wales was being reformed and reorganised via the Crime and Disorder Act (1998). MUltiple methods and sources were used to …

Standing And Spending—The Role Of Legal And Equitable Principles, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2001

Standing And Spending—The Role Of Legal And Equitable Principles, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

The stated purpose of this Conference is to examine the proper scope of the spending power: “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, and to pay the Debts and to provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States.” My assignment is to track the relationship, if any, between the expansion of the spending power and the articulation of the standing doctrine as a principle of American Constitutional law. The connection, between the two, displays at least historical intimacy. The rise of modern standing doctrine in American Constitutional Law can …

Association Of The Bar Of The City Of New York Symposium On Immigration And Criminal Law: Introduction, Nancy Morawetz

Faculty Articles

It is now six years since Congress drastically changed the rules governing lawful permanent residents convicted of crime and established an extreme dual system of criminal law under which immigrants raised legally in this country from childhood can be deported summarily for crimes that did not even lead to a single day in jail. In the space of the last six years, thousands of lawful permanent residents have been deported without any opportunity to prove that they are rehabilitated, that their deportation would work an extreme hardship on their families, or even that their honorable service in the United States …

Unique Characteristics Of A Graduate Program In Applied Communication, Stuart M. Schrader, Kim White Mills, Robert Dick Jan 2001

Unique Characteristics Of A Graduate Program In Applied Communication, Stuart M. Schrader, Kim White Mills, Robert Dick

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This paper addresses one Communication Department's sojourn in designing, developing, and proposing a unique Master of Arts in Applied Communication. Our discipline has long acknowledged the importance of applied communication scholarship and the marketplace has frequently confirmed the importance of providing applied communication knowledge to produce employees who are competent communicators. We are, however, still without terminal graduate programs that are rooted in the foundation of applied communication. Our department's program is reflexively framing its program using applied communication assumptions.
