Early Civil Rights Activism In Topeka, Kansas, Prior To The 1954 Brown Case, Jean Van Delinder Jan 2001

Early Civil Rights Activism In Topeka, Kansas, Prior To The 1954 Brown Case, Jean Van Delinder

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

On an early spring day in the city of Topeka, Kansas, a father walked his child to their neighborhood school. His child was refused admission and was instructed to attend one reserved for "colored children." The parent filed a lawsuit and sued the Topeka Board of Education, demanding that his child be received and instructed at that school, regardless of race. The case went to the Kansas State Supreme Court where it became a precedent for maintaining school segregation in Topeka and other cities in Kansas. The year was 1902. Despite its outcome, this lawsuit illustrates the local-level issues and …

Languages For Engineering Design: Empirical Constructs For Representing Objects And Articulating Processes, Clive L. Dym, Philip Brey

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Design knowledge incorporates knowledge and information about designed objects and their attributes, as well as about methods and means for undertaking the design process. Such design knowledge is articulated in several different representations or languages. This paper presents a typology of the languages of engineering design, emphasizing the representation of designed objects and the articulation and representation of the cognitive processes of design. Design languages include verbal or textual statements, drawings and graphics, formulas, and numbers. Still other design languages follow from computational styles. The languages of design and their computer-based implementations are empirical in origin, since observation reveals that …

Was Genocide Committed In Bosnia And Herzegovina? First Judgments Of The International Criminal Tribunal For The Former Yugoslavia, William A. Schabas Jan 2001

Was Genocide Committed In Bosnia And Herzegovina? First Judgments Of The International Criminal Tribunal For The Former Yugoslavia, William A. Schabas

Fordham International Law Journal

There are to date some six significant judicial pronouncements dealing with the interpretation and application of article 4--genocide - of the ICTY Statute: two Rule 61 hearings; the Trial Chamber rulings in Jelisic, Krstic, and Sikirica; and the Appeals Chamber decision in Jelisic. In the course of these judgments, the ICTY has made important pronouncements about the actus reus of genocide, the nature of the protected groups, the quantitative dimension of the crime, and the concept of intent.

It is now nearly a decade since international justice began examining whether genocide was committed in Bosnia. Astonishingly, the really big question-and …

The Back-Door To Prison: Waiver Reform, "Blended Sentencing," And The Law Of Unintended Consequences, Marcy Rasmussen Podkopacz, Barry C. Feld Jan 2001

The Back-Door To Prison: Waiver Reform, "Blended Sentencing," And The Law Of Unintended Consequences, Marcy Rasmussen Podkopacz, Barry C. Feld

Articles

The Minnesota innovation, "Extended Jurisdiction Juvenile Prosecution (EJJ)," allowed judges simultaneously to impose a delinquency disposition and an adult criminal sentence, the execution of which the judge stayed pending successful completion of the delinquency sentence. Podkapacz and Feld analyze the implementation of Minnesota's new EJJ blended sentencing law in Hennepin County, the largest metropolitan county in the state.

The Trusteeship Of Legal Rulemaking, Edward S. Adams, Richard A. Saliterman Jan 2001

The Trusteeship Of Legal Rulemaking, Edward S. Adams, Richard A. Saliterman

Articles

Professor Robert D. Putnam's work is, in many respects, the contemporary companion to Democracy in America.' It comprehensively surveys and tests common presumptions held about our democracy with apparently very reliable quantitative data. Until recently, a work of this depth and breadth has been unavailable. Putnam sets forth a well supported thesis suggesting that even though American financial capital may be at a high, its "social capital" has perhaps reached a record low, or at least a level similar to the social, economic, and legal bottleneck of a century ago.' His use of empirical and combined data, however, probes into …

Increasing Coverage Of Reproductive Health Issues In The Indonesian Print Media, Wanda Firmansyah, Sahar Hegazi, Siti Rokhmawati Darwisyah, Lila Amaliah

Reproductive Health

With the reform movement in Indonesia, the FRONTIERS project recognized the new opportunities for influencing public debate and informing public opinion on reproductive health issues and undertook a project for disseminating the results of contemporary research on reproductive health. The project had three main objectives: 1) to increase print media coverage of critical reproductive health issues by enhancing journalists’ role as responsible communication agents; 2) to contribute to public debate on emerging reproductive health issues in order to influence policy development and guide program management; and 3) to increase public awareness of key health issues, with a particular focus on …

Power In Sexual Relationships: An Opening Dialogue Among Reproductive Health Professionals, Population Council, Interagency Gender Working Group (Igwg) Jan 2001

Power In Sexual Relationships: An Opening Dialogue Among Reproductive Health Professionals, Population Council, Interagency Gender Working Group (Igwg)

Reproductive Health

The discussions summarized in this report indicate that gender-based power inequalities hinder communication between partners, limit the ability of individuals and couples to talk about or achieve desired child spacing and family-size goals, limit effective use of reproductive health services, undercut men’s and women’s attainment of sexual health and pleasure, and increase substantially their vulnerabiliy to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. This report summarizes the proceedings of a meeting, co-sponsored by the Population Council and USAID’s Men and Reproductive Health Subcommittee, that responded to an increasing groundswell of interest in opening a dialogue on power in sexual relationships. The …

Problem-Based Learning. A Critical Review Of Its Educational Objectives And The Rationale For Its Use, Samy A. Azer Jan 2001

Problem-Based Learning. A Critical Review Of Its Educational Objectives And The Rationale For Its Use, Samy A. Azer

Neurosciences

Over the past 30 years there has been an increasing interest in curriculum innovation in medical schools in North America, the United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Australia. Since the introduction of problem-based learning at McMaster University in Canada in 1969, several medical schools throughout the world have adopted problem-based learning as the educational and philosophical basis of their curricula. Several studies have shown that problem-based learning is an important educational strategy for integrating the curriculum, motivating the students and helping them to identify their learning issues and set their own learning goals. However, there is a great deal of concern regarding …

Nf01-451 Consumer Responsibility In Health Care: Improving Communication With Your Provider, Mary Ellen Rider, Paul Flack

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The U.S. health care system continues to undergo reform. The direction of change places more emphasis on the patient to be a responsible partner in his/her own care and for those for whom they are responsible (family members) for care. One of the most important skills consumers have to exercise in this partnership is communication skills.
