Does Vanity Describe Other Cultures?: A Cross Cultural Examination Of The Vanity Scale, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, John Watson Jan 2001

Does Vanity Describe Other Cultures?: A Cross Cultural Examination Of The Vanity Scale, Srinivas Durvasula, Steven Lysonski, John Watson

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Vanity is a psychological construct that describes a person's excessive concern with physical appearance or achievement. A scale, recently developed to measure this construct, has been psychometrically validated using data from U.S. respondents. The goal of this paper is to determine if this scale can be used cross-culturally. If the scale has cross-cultural applicability, it can be used as a counseling device to guide and alert individuals to certain tendencies. The scale also can be used to track foreign cultures as they adopt a consumerism ethos more aligned to Western consumer culture. Based on data from 475 young adults in …

Science, Philosophy, And The Courts, Jason Borenstein Jan 2001

Science, Philosophy, And The Courts, Jason Borenstein

St. Thomas Law Review

The purpose of this article is to explore the legal system's philosophical assumptions about science and examine whether scientific evidence has been handled adequately by the federal courts. This article does not intend to offer a comprehensive philosophy of science. Rather, it discusses specific issues that have been raised by courts when they have tried to evaluate scientific expert testimony. Scientific testimony tends to pose an especially difficult challenge for the court system, because it can be deeply inaccessible to lay judges and juries. To complicate matters further, the courts have raised several issues they probably are unable to resolve, …

Sorting Out Federal And State Judicial Roles In State Insitutional Reform: Abstention's Potential Role, Charles R. Wise, Robert K. Christensen Jan 2001

Sorting Out Federal And State Judicial Roles In State Insitutional Reform: Abstention's Potential Role, Charles R. Wise, Robert K. Christensen

Fordham Urban Law Journal

The U.S. Supreme Court has given federal courts the authority to abstain from hearing certain cases and defer to state courts in some cases where constitutional or federal statutory rights have been violated. This piece attempts to clarify the abstention requirements and provide a clear rationale for the doctrine. Part I of this piece discusses the origin and development of the abstention doctrine, focusing specifically on the Burford abstention, a kind of abstention particularly salient to institutional reform cases. Part I also illustrates the inconsistencies inherent in the application of the abstention doctrine in its current form. Parts II and …

Accounting For Domain Context In Evaluation, Meriem Chater, David G. Novick Jan 2001

Accounting For Domain Context In Evaluation, Meriem Chater, David G. Novick

Departmental Papers (CS)

Work is situated activity. Taking into account human factors in evaluation involves considering not only users but also their contexts of use. Consequently, the evaluation of systems — from video-games to safetycritical interfaces — requires analysis of context to understand not only the effect of context on usability but also the impact of artifacts' usability on users' environments. In the case of safety-critical systems (SCS), errors (by users or designers) may threaten human lives.
To assess the degree to which interface evaluation methods currently account for context, we have used the research strategy taxonomy of McGrath as a framework for …

The Deconstruction Of Refugees And The Reconstruction Of History, Peter W. Van Arsdale Jan 2001

The Deconstruction Of Refugees And The Reconstruction Of History, Peter W. Van Arsdale

Human Rights & Human Welfare

A review of States and Strangers: Refugees and Displacements of Statecraft, by Nevzat Soguk. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press (Borderlines Series, No. 11) 1999. 328 pp.

I would characterize Nevzat Soguk as either a neo-liberal operating in the guise of a postmodern deconstructionist, or a post-modern deconstructionist operating in the guise of a neoliberal. This is not a trivial distinction, nor an attempt to play semantic games, but my attempt to classify a brilliant theorist (known for his work in political science) whose book has a great deal of merit—but whose writing at times seems aimed more at discursive analysis …

Nt 520 Introduction To The New Testament, Ben Witherington

Syllabi

1) J. Drane, Introducing the New Testament, San Francisco: Harpers, 1990, (pb). An excellent readable basic introduction. If this is too simple for you, you may want to try R.P. Martin’s two volume work New Testament Foundations. 2)L. MacDonald and S. Porter, Early Christianity and its Sacred Literature, (Peabody: Hendrickson, 2000). Though I am not requiring it, if you really want to understand the `values’ of the first century world, read B. Malina’s The New Testament World, 2nd ed. 3) J.B. Green et. al. eds The Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, Downers Grove: I-V Press, 1993 (hb) 4) G.F …

Labor Market Dropouts And The Racial Wage Gap: 1940-90: Dissertation Summary, Amitabh Chandra Jan 2001

Labor Market Dropouts And The Racial Wage Gap: 1940-90: Dissertation Summary, Amitabh Chandra

Dissertation Awards

In this dissertation I have studied the empirical content of the Butler-Heckman thesis. Using U.S. decennial census data from 1940 to 1990, I demonstrate that studies which have made inferences based on the CPS have excluded the institutionalized and incarcerated populations and thereby dramatically understated the extent of black nonemployment. By identifying the distribution of offer wages to blacks and whites as the distribution of interest in assessing black economic progress, I discuss the economic content of alternative identifying assumptions used to recover this latent distribution.
