Introduction: Migrants Against Slavery, Philip J. Schwarz

History Publications

From the introduction, "The stories in this book show that complete avoidance of slavery was impossible because of the power of Virginian slaveholders and because of the residues of slavery in the Midwest and elsewhere in the North. Because of these factors, people who left Virginia to avoid slavery developed diverse tactics and followed markedly different routes."

Introduction includes historical data tables: Virginia-born African-Americans in northern cities, 1850 and 1860; Free Virginia-born people living in states outside Virginia, 1850 and 1860; Ratio of free expatriates to their native eastern states' free population, 1850 and 1860; Distribution of expatriates from South …

Civic Journalism In The 2000 U.S. Senate Race In Virginia, David Kennamer, Jeff C. South Jan 2001

Civic Journalism In The 2000 U.S. Senate Race In Virginia, David Kennamer, Jeff C. South

Richard T. Robertson School of Communication Presentations

The Norfolk Virginian-Pilot is a proponent of civic journalism; the Richmond Times-Dispatch is not. Content analysis of the papers’ coverage of Virginia’s 2000 U.S. Senate election reflected the divergent newsroom philosophies. The Times-Dispatch stories were more likely to be triggered by campaign-managed events, to focus on the election “horse race” and to use political establishment sources. The Pilot’s stories were more likely to result from independent or enterprise reporting, to address issues and to use “real people” sources.

2000 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State Jan 2001

2000 Trafficking In Persons Report, U.S. Department Of State

Human Trafficking: Data and Documents

Trafficking in persons is a fundamental and crucially important challenge in the areas of human rights and law enforcement. Based on reliable estimates, as the Congress has noted, at least 700,000 persons, especially women and children, are trafficked each year across international borders. Some observers estimate that the number may be significantly higher. Victims are forced to toil in sweatshops, construction sites, brothels, and fields. Deprived of the enjoyment of their human rights, many victims are subjected to threats against their person and family, violence, horrific living conditions, and dangerous workplaces. Some victims have answered advertisements believing that they will …

Some of these papers in turn focused on ''agency,'' the ways …
