Encountering Amateurism: John Henry Wigmore And The Uses Of American Formalism, Annelise Riles
Encountering Amateurism: John Henry Wigmore And The Uses Of American Formalism, Annelise Riles
Public Law and Legal Theory Papers
This article explores the productive uses of amateurism in comparative law through a close reading of the life and work of John Henry Wigmore, the founder of the American tradition of comparative law who first came to the subject as a young missionary for the Langdellian style of American legal education in turn-of-the-century Japan. Drawing on anthropological and linguistic theory, the article explains amateurism as a post-Realist epithet for formalism. It seeks to counter the received view of the discipline as a pure product of American and European critiques of legal classicism by demonstrating how Wigmore's turn to the performative …

A Long And Winding Road To Employment?: Disabled Young People In Northern Ireland Making The Transition To Adulthood, John Mclaughlin, Marina Monteith, Helga Sneddon
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper presents the findings of a qualitative research project that explores the experiences and aspirations of disabled young people in Northern Ireland as they make and deal with the transition to adulthood. The study involved young people with disabilities (n=76) in four areas of Northern Ireland, ensuring a geographical spread, an urban/rural mix and representation of both communities. Young people with learning disabilities were included as well as those with physical and/or sensory impairments. This paper focuses on those who were completing job training or work placements and examines the role of such schemes in assisting young people's transition …

All Graduate Projects
The purpose of this project was to develop a handbook to assist secondary health teachers in providing a tool to develop healthy body image, through health promotion. Many health teachers are left with few resources to teach healthy body image. Through the review ofliterature, the writer presented the definition of healthy body image, the history behind eating disorders, the physiological/psychological effects of eating disorders, as well as the benefits of implementing a Healthy Body Image-Health Promotion handbook. This handbook should be a significant aid to secondary health teachers, and others who have an interest in helping adolescents understand eating disorders …

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
When I learned that CLAGS had secured an interdisciplinary program in Lesbian and Gay Studies and that the first course, An Introduction to Lesbian and Gay/Queer Studies, was to be offered in the Fall, I knew that I wanted to be in what I conceived as the first step in a much larger offering and celebration of critical ideas and counter-hegemonic discourse. I thought: finally, I won't be the only student reading and thinking from a radically left, feminist, lesbian, perspective - not that all of these four leanings must in any way accompany the position of lesbian, gay or …

Over the past two years since the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie Wyoming, the circumstances of his death have held a symbolic place in the story of violence against gay men and lesbians nationally. University of Wyoming Professor Beth Loffreda's book Losing Matt Shepard: Life and Politics in the Aftermath of Anti-Gay Murder is on the "Lambda Book Report" best-sellers list and MTV has recently premiered "Anatomy of a Hate Crime: The Matthew Shepard Story" that dramatized the events of October 6th, 1998. The telling and retelling of Shepard's murder in both academic books and popular culture suggests …
