The Influences Of Personal Background On Perceptions Of Juvenile Correctional Environments, Ojmarrh Mitchell, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Angela Gover, Gaylene Armstrong
The Influences Of Personal Background On Perceptions Of Juvenile Correctional Environments, Ojmarrh Mitchell, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Angela Gover, Gaylene Armstrong
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
This study examined whether the individual characteristics of race, sex, and education affect juvenile correctional staff's perceptions of their work environments. Prior to 1970, correctional staff were minimally educated and predominantly comprised of White males. Correctional reformers believed that employing more female, minority, and highly educated staff members would lead to more efficacious correctional environments. The existing research conducted in adult correctional facilities not only calls this belief into question, but also indicates that the hiring of nontraditional staff may have exacerbated existing internal hostilities. These research efforts uniformly examined adult correctional institutions, however. This study examined these issues in …

Dealing With Nuisance And Depredating Black Bears, Gary W. Witmer, Donald G. Whittaker
Dealing With Nuisance And Depredating Black Bears, Gary W. Witmer, Donald G. Whittaker
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Black bears (Ursus americanus) are a valued resource in North America but pose many challenges to resource managers. They may be managed in 1 or more ways, including sustained yield harvests, nuisance animal control, or conservation management. Many black bear populations are stable or increasing, and combine with expanding human populations, increased development, and recreational activities, are leading to an increase in human-bear conflicts. Historically, methods such as relocation, general hunting seasons, or special hunts have been used in an effort to reduce bear density and damage, or to target individual offending animals. Many resource managers now operate …

A Closer Look At The Nature Of Intimate Partner Violence Reported By Women With A History Of Child Sexual Abuse, David Dilillo, Dawn Giuffre, George C. Tremblay, Lizette Peterson
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
This study provides an examination of violence occurring in the couple relationships of female survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Participants were 240 low-income women, 113 of whom (47%) reported some history of CSA. Compared with non–sexually abused women, those who had experienced CSA reported that their couple relationships were more likely to have involved several severe forms of violence, including hitting, kicking, and beating. Comparisons of the directional patterns of partner violence revealed that a greater proportion of CSA survivors’ relationships had involved at least one incident of both man-to-woman and woman-to-man aggression. An unexpected finding was that a …

History Of Affective Disorder And The Temporal Trajectory Of Fatigue In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Judith Fifield, Julia Mcquillan, Howard Tennen, T. Joseph Sheehan, Susan Reisine, Victor Hesselbrock, Naomi Rothfield
Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications
This study examines whether the general level and rate of change of fatigue over time is different for those rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with and those without a history of affective disorder (AD). Four hundred fifteen RA patients from a national panel had yearly telephone interviews to obtain fatigue and distress reports, and a one-time semistructured assessment of the history of depression and generalized anxiety disorder. Growth-curve analysis was used to capture variations in initial fatigue levels and changes in fatigue over 7 years for those with and without a history. RA patients with a history of major AD reported …

Factors Influencing Ged And Diploma Attainment Of High School Dropouts, Jeffrey C. Wayman
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
This study examined correlates of degree attainment in high school dropouts. Participants were high school dropouts of Mexican American or non-Latino white descent who had no degree, a high school degree, or a GED certificate. This study was unique in that it accounted for sample bias of missing data through the use of multiple imputation, it considered students who had dropped out as early as 7th grade, and it was able to include variables found significant in previous research on returning dropouts. ...

Try Gospel Music For A Spirit Surge, Grammy Nominated-Choir Members Suggest, Deidra Jackson
University of Mississippi News
UNIVERSITY, Miss. --To many, gospel music soothes the soul and replaces the doldrums with sweet spirits. The word "gospel" actually comes from an Old English word meaning "good news." If you haven't been introduced to this genre of music but are interested in creating your own sampler, take a little inspiration from some members of the Grammy Award-nominated University of Mississippi (UM) Gospel Choir.
