Advertising Appeal And The New Woman, Santosh Dhar, Prashant Mishra, Upinder Dhar

IIMB Management Review

The study of the act reinforces the view clearly reinforces the view that while targetting customers, their psycho-social status as reflected by their employment and marital status, cannot be ignored. Women in today's market cannot be considered as a homogeneous group. Their diversity in terms of psycho-social status must be accepted and taken into consideration while making any segmentation and target decision. The present and previous researches suggest that increasing resources of women and an emerging social shift towards egalitarianism are producing more joint and independent decision-making in product service categories of high perceived risk. The increased importance of feminine …

Social Work And Labor: A Look At The North American Agreement On Labor Cooperation, Constance Phelps Mar 2001

Social Work And Labor: A Look At The North American Agreement On Labor Cooperation, Constance Phelps

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC), a side agreement to NAFTA, provides an instructive example of an attempt to link global trade to labor standards. While this side agreement was created in order to bolster the internationalization of trade, it has brought Labor, human rights groups and governments together to scrutinize and challenge the ways that each NAFTA member country ensures the provision of basic health, safety, and human rights on the job. Effective enforcement of the Agreement will come only with political pressure from a wide variety of groups interested in improving quality of life for workers …

Crime Rates And Confidence In The Police: America's Changing Attitudes Toward Crime And Police, 1972-1999, Georgia Ackerman, Bobbie Anderson, Scott Jensen, Randy Ludwig, Darrel Montero, Nicole Plante, Vince Yanez

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper examines American national public opinion on crime and the American police force. The data were gathered from published opinion polls of national samples of adults taken from 1972-1999. The findings reveal that Americans have contradictory perceptions regarding crime in their area, crime in our nation, confidence in the police, and the honesty of the nation's police officers. A growing number of respondents report that crime seems to be decreasing; however, a majority of Americans still report that there is more crime in their area than there was a year ago. These are only a few examples of the …

Symposium Introduction - Brown V. Board Of Education After Fifty Years: Context And Synopsis, James L. Hunt Mar 2001

Symposium Introduction - Brown V. Board Of Education After Fifty Years: Context And Synopsis, James L. Hunt

Mercer Law Review

For white Southerners, the United States Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education was important because it challenged racial discrimination in the most important governmental function of their communities: public education. As a consequence, the significance of Brown is not limited to the legal strategies of the parties or the decision-making process on the Supreme Court, however critical those activities were. Of additional usefulness in understanding Brown is the experience of the people who would either defy or support it. The essential political nature of Brown requires an effort to consider its impact at the local level. The …

Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Non-Metropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko Mar 2001

Relationships Between Community Attributes And Residential Preference In Non-Metropolitan Nebraska, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Soonchul Ko

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This paper examines the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans. Data from the 1998 Nebraska Rural Poll were analyzed at two levels. First, the residential preferences of rural Nebraskans were compared to those of the general population of the United States. Second, the relationships between the attributes of the respondents’ current community and their residential preferences were examined. Current community size, the social attributes of the community and evaluations of local community services were all determined to be important influences on residential preferences. The findings illustrate the possible positive impact on rural Great Plains communities of enhancing social interaction and creatively …

The Forgotten Origins Of The Ecumenical Movement In England: The Grindelwald Conferences, 1892-95, Christopher Oldstone-Moore

History Faculty Publications

Ruth Rouse, writing in A History of the Ecumenical Movement, made an extraordinary claim about the origins of modern ecumenism. She identified two factors in the 1890s that, in her words, "changed the course of Church history and made possible the modern ecumenical movement." One was the Student Christian Movement, established m 1895 by the American Methodist layman, John R. Mott. The other factor was the Grindelwald (Switzerland) Reunion Conferences, an assembly mostly of English church leaders organized by a Methodist minister, Henry Lunn, between 1892 and 1895. Mott's movement is very well known to modern readers. The Grindelwald Conferences, …

Our New Children: The Surrogate Role Of Companion Animals In Women's Lives, Wendy G. Turner

The Qualitative Report

As the rate of pet ownership increases, companion animals are fulfilling a variety of roles in the lives of their humans. This article provides insight on the role that companion animals play in the lives of women. The women in this study showed stronger attachments to those animals that either preceded the birth of their children, or followed the children leaving home. This finding has potential implications for services provided to women by various helping professions.

Renewing The Civic Mission Of The American Research University, Barry Checkoway Mar 2001

Renewing The Civic Mission Of The American Research University, Barry Checkoway

Higher Education

Should the American research university have a strategy for renewing its civic mission in a diverse democratic society and, if so, what should it be?

Many American research universities were established with a civic mission to prepare students for active participation in a diverse democracy and to develop knowledge for the improvement of communities. Today, however, it is hard to find top administrators with consistent commitment to this mission, few faculty members consider it central to their role, and community groups that approach the university for assistance often find it difficult to get what they need.

Intergenerational Labor Market And Welfare Consequences Of Poor Health, Thomas J. Kniesner, Anthony T. Losasso Mar 2001

Intergenerational Labor Market And Welfare Consequences Of Poor Health, Thomas J. Kniesner, Anthony T. Losasso

Center for Policy Research

Our research provides new econometric evidence concerning partial economic risk sharing between a frail elderly parent and an adult child. We estimate a jointly determined limited dependent variables system explaining the parent’s entry into a nursing home, the adult child’s visits to the parent, and the adult child’s labor supplied. The time allocation of adult sons is unaffected by a parent’s frail health. Adult daughters who visit a frail elderly parent daily decrease their annual labor supplied by about 1,000 hours annually, largely through labor force non-participation. The implied welfare loss to the daughter from a frail elderly parent in …

The Financial Vulnerability Of People With Disabilities: Assessing Poverty Risks, Andrew I. Batavia, Richard Beaulaurier Mar 2001

The Financial Vulnerability Of People With Disabilities: Assessing Poverty Risks, Andrew I. Batavia, Richard Beaulaurier

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The economic self-sufficiency and independence of people with disabilities depend largely on their capacity to maintain financial stability. As a group, such individuals have among the highest poverty rates, lowest educational levels, lowest average incomes, and highest out-of-pocket expenses of all population groups. Any substantial shock to the financial stability of people with disabilities can threaten their access to necessary housing, nutrition, medical care, and other resources, the absence of which may result in further vulnerability and possible poverty. This article offers a theoretical framework for understanding disability poverty risk. Empirical studies are needed to test this model, quantifying the …

Defining Human Services, Chaim Zins Mar 2001

Defining Human Services, Chaim Zins

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study aims at formulating adequate criteria for designing the field of human services. Based on a conceptual analysis of "human services" the study establishes the theoretical ground of a four-category model for classifying human service organizations, and three alternative definitions of the field. The classificatory principle underlying the model and the definitions reflects the contribution of human services to overall societal wellbeing. I conclude the study by discussing the implications for social welfare policy planning, service design and evaluation, and shaping the nature of the helping professions.

History Of Brazil, Judy Bieber

Brazil Curriculum Study Guides

This guide is an updated and expanded version of that written by Michael Conniff and Fred Sturm for the first Brazil Curriculum Guides Series published by the Latin American and Iberian Institute of the University of New Mexico in 1985. To summarize nearly five hundred years of Brazilian history and to identify relevant historiographical trends is a daunting task. This guide is meant to serve as a preliminary overview, and given length limitations, is by no means an exhaustive treatment of the subject. I give priority to works of history, but anthropology, sociology, and other disciplines are also represented where …
