Exploring The Boundaries, James Davenport Apr 2001

Exploring The Boundaries, James Davenport

The Park Place Economist

Dr. Postlewaite's presentation focused on the argument that preferences over goods and services that are typically taken as given and exogenous in most economic models are social constructions that are endogenous in more primitive models. Early economists were interested in human behavior and one hundred years ago the division began among economics and sociology in terms of the questions asked and problems answered. Sociological concerns and psychological components are essential in explaining economic behavior and must be incorporated in economic models.

The Family Gap: Do Mothers Earn Less, Alicia Lange '01 Apr 2001

The Family Gap: Do Mothers Earn Less, Alicia Lange '01

The Park Place Economist

“Women must work fifteen months and eight days to earn what men earn in a year" (Lesley, 1999). In a society where women are often single mothers who must support both themselves and children, why would they get paid less than men for doing the same job? When John F. Kennedy passed the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which promised women "equal pay for equal work," women earned only 58 cents for every dollar men earned. This pay gap is disappearing at a rate of about ten cents every twenty to thirty years (Leinwand, 1999). And more recently, President Clinton …

The Sense Of Coherence In Adjustment To Widowhood, Nora Dorothy Hartung Apr 2001

The Sense Of Coherence In Adjustment To Widowhood, Nora Dorothy Hartung

Masters Theses

The purpose for this study is to discover if a feature of personality, the Sense of Coherence, is a factor in the adjustment of women to widowhood. It has been suggested that women with a strong Sense of Coherence (SOC) will use adaptive behaviors and resources in their transition to widowhood. My observation at the church I attend is the reason for this inquiry.

The method used in this research is a questionnaire administered at six senior centers of Senior Services Inc., in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A sample (n tested. 50) of widowed women were tested.

A questionnaire was administered to …

Consumer Discrimination: The Limitations Of Federal Civil Rights Protection, Deseriee A. Kennedy Apr 2001

Consumer Discrimination: The Limitations Of Federal Civil Rights Protection, Deseriee A. Kennedy

Missouri Law Review

This Article argues that consumer discrimination is symptomatic of the myriad ways in which racism has become subtly muted and infused into everyday interaction. This “everyday racism,” while carried out and experienced by individuals, is a result of social and institutional policies and, therefore, it represents a fusion of both individual and institutional racism. Despite the ubiquity of the experience, courts have been reluctant to directly address the harms that result from being the target of racial profiling in consumer setting using pre-trial dismissals and an unduly constricted reading of the Civil Rights Act to reject plaintiffs’ claims. The courts …

Nudists In The Know: Investigating Social Assumptions Of A Clothed Society, Sandra E. Schroer Apr 2001

Nudists In The Know: Investigating Social Assumptions Of A Clothed Society, Sandra E. Schroer

Masters Theses

This work is an institutional ethnography on the ruling relations of clothing in society. Research was conducted through a standpoint methodology which combines interviews, participant observation and the first hand experiences of the researcher.

The interview data reveals nudists' belief in a social preoccupation with body ideals and the power structures created by some uses of clothing. The subjects in this research apply their experiences in both the clothed world and the non-clothed world to expose the implications of the social structures of clothing which appear to effect interpersonal relationships, gender and disability, inequality, prejudice and ageism.

In addition, the …

Social Influence On Paranormal Beliefs, Barry N. Markovsky, Shane R. Thye Apr 2001

Social Influence On Paranormal Beliefs, Barry N. Markovsky, Shane R. Thye

Faculty Publications

In spite of strong public expressions of skepticism from the scientific community, polls show that more than nine out of ten American adults profess belief in paranormal phenomena. Some scientists view this as a social problem, directing much blame (but little research) at a variety of sources including lack of critical thinking skills, fads, need for transcendent experiences, failure of the educational system, and cultural cycles. Social impact theory provides an alternative focus: it views paranormal beliefs as a natural consequence of social influence processes in interpersonal settings. In this study, subjects in a laboratory experiment were informed that some …

Expectations Of Iconographic Symbols In Third Century Christianity, David Corbet Apr 2001

Expectations Of Iconographic Symbols In Third Century Christianity, David Corbet

Doctor of Ministry

Art is the avenue down which one moves to encounter the divine. It is the expression of a person's or groups spiritual experience. Through art the divine and the human meet. Within the framework of art, there are different means of expression. A symbol serves as a pointer, directing the audience towards the divine. Figurative expression depicts scenes from religious history, which carries meaning to the audience about their tradition and their history. Narrative expressions tell a story with significance to the religious community. Every religion has some type of artistic expression. This is how a religion demonstrates its own …

The Influence Of Race On Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Nonsexual Dual Relationships, Beatrice Antly Tatem Apr 2001

The Influence Of Race On Ethical Decision-Making Regarding Nonsexual Dual Relationships, Beatrice Antly Tatem

Dissertations

Ethical decision-making is a crucial part of the daily practice of psychologists. Psychologists are faced with the challenge of developing ethical decision-making strategies that effectively address the dilemmas associated with dual relationships. Nonsexual dual relationship is defined in this research as a clinical professional relationship that occurs simultaneously with a nonsexual professional and/or personal relationship. Psychologists, regardless of the environment in which they work or the client population with whom they work, can experience a nonsexual dual relationship.

The current study investigated whether ethnographic therapist characteristics influence the interpretation and application of the APA Ethical Guidelines and thus psychologists’ decision-making …

The Grandparent-Raising-Grandchildren Phenomenon In Michigan, Linda Gail Kimball Apr 2001

The Grandparent-Raising-Grandchildren Phenomenon In Michigan, Linda Gail Kimball

Dissertations

Role theory, specifically the incongruous and time-disordered role fit confronted by grandparent caregivers, provides the theoretical basis for this inductive qualitative research study.

A cohort of thirty-five grandparent caregivers, predominantly White, middle-income, older and married, participated in this study. Also included were seven leaders of support groups for grandparents responsible for raising their grandchildren.

Instrumentation included 23 questions to elicit demographic information from the grandparent caregiver. Additionally, the grandparents and the support group leaders responded to a set of focused questions designed to identify (a) the issues facing grandparents who are primary caregivers for their grandchildren, (b) the implications for …

On American Legal Education Reform In Japanese Legal Education, Carl E. Schneider Apr 2001

On American Legal Education Reform In Japanese Legal Education, Carl E. Schneider

Articles

The one hundredth anniversary of the Kyoto University Faculty of Law is the kind of splendid occasion when, as Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes remarked, a distinguished institution "becomes conscious of itself and its meaning." I can hardly express my pleasure at being invited to join in your celebration; but I must express my fear that I can add little to it. When Dean Tanaka kindly invited me, I should probably have declined, for I, a foreigner, can hardly know enough about an institution so central to the life of its country and its profession to speak of it and its …

A Health System Analysis Approach To Health Outcomes In Medicare Clients With Chronic Illnesses, Christine A. Elnitsky Apr 2001

A Health System Analysis Approach To Health Outcomes In Medicare Clients With Chronic Illnesses, Christine A. Elnitsky

Health Services Research Dissertations

Since 1863, outcomes measurement efforts have provided information to health care consumers, administrators, and policymakers in assessing concerns about access, quality and costs. With a growing population of older adults with chronic illnesses, cost-cutting strategies in health delivery systems, and federal endorsement of managed care systems, researchers have begun to evaluate the impact of different delivery system organizations on health. The current study combines two areas of health services research to provide the first published hierarchical analysis of the influence of delivery system factors, and a profile of population and community characteristics and utilization factors, on perceived health outcomes of …
