Positive Possibilities For Child And Family Welfare: Options For Expanding The Anglo-American Child Protection Paradigm, Gary Cameron, Nancy Colleen Freymond, Denise Cornfield, Sally Palmer Apr 2001

Positive Possibilities For Child And Family Welfare: Options For Expanding The Anglo-American Child Protection Paradigm, Gary Cameron, Nancy Colleen Freymond, Denise Cornfield, Sally Palmer

Partnerships for Children and Families Project

The creation of the ‘problem of child maltreatment’ and how we deal with it are best understood as particular discourses which grow out of specific histories and social configurations. The Anglo-American child protection paradigm can be viewed as a particular configuration rooted in our vision for children, families, community, and society. However, other settings have constructed quite different responses reflecting their own priorities and desired outcomes. This paper is an effort to understand the choices made in Ontario’s child protection system by examining its history and the underlying beliefs and values which have fostered its development. In addition, the paper …

Individual And Organisational Learning Issues Relevant To Knowledge Management In Organisations :, Abhoy K Ojha

Working Papers

Within the last few years, the topfc of knowledge management has generated a lot of interest in the corporate sectors. Although there is no commonly agreed upon definition of knowledge or knowledge management, all kinds of organizations are implementing knowledge management The literature on knowledge management can broadly be categorized into three parts, one focusing in the strategic imperatives of knowledge management, the second focusing on the use of IT to support knowledge management initiatives, and the third on the behavioral issues around implementing and operating knowledge management This paper examines the third stream of literature to present the individual …

Role Of Community Dominance Of Trade Channels In India: Exploratory Study, Janat Shah Apr 2001

Role Of Community Dominance Of Trade Channels In India: Exploratory Study, Janat Shah

Working Papers

The process of liberalisation of the Indian economy and efforts to integrate it with the global economic set up has led to a lot of changes in the way business is being organised and conducted. One of the sectors of the economy which has seen important, if not actually dramatic change in the past decade has been the trading segment. Lot of companies including multinationals are trying to introduce novel practices in their distribution and retail systems in order to penetrate the Indian market. But so far their efforts in this direction have not been supported by an ability to …

Integrative Mechanisms In Imitative R&D Projects, T Ravichandran, T R Madanmohan Apr 2001

Integrative Mechanisms In Imitative R&D Projects, T Ravichandran, T R Madanmohan

Working Papers

A considerable number of studies have been actualized on the integrative mechanisms in new product innovation. Most of these studies have focussed on functional integration, especially R and D-marketing interfaces, as a unit of analysis. Studies have pointed out that most innovations is old science rather than new discovery. The most notable Japanese products did not involve any discontinuous innovations, but imitative and incremental innovations However, not much is known about the use and effectiveness of interfacing mechanisms in imitative projects. The research on imitation management, especially at the project-level leaves much to be desired. The aim of the study …

Earning And Caring: Demographic Change And Policy Implications, Roderic Beaujot Apr 2001

Earning And Caring: Demographic Change And Policy Implications, Roderic Beaujot

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Seeking to define families as groups of people who share earning and caring activities, we contrast theoretical orientations that see advantages to a division of labour or complementary roles, in comparison to orientations that see less risk and greater companionship in a collaborative model based on sharing paid and unpaid work, or co-providing and co-parenting.

It is important to look both inside and outside of families, or at the changing gendered links between earning and caring, to understand change both in families and in the work world. It is proposed that equal opportunity by gender has advanced further in the …

Determinents Of Public Utility's Performance, Sanjay Gupta, V Ranganathan, Lakshmanan Prasad Apr 2001

Determinents Of Public Utility's Performance, Sanjay Gupta, V Ranganathan, Lakshmanan Prasad

Working Papers

Organizations under public ownership have earned the dubious distinction that nonperformance is the hallmark of public ownership and even any improvement can at best be only ephemeral. Several agencies based and democracy based theories have explained why they cannot perform. But no study has addressed the significant variations in their performance and tried to explain these variations in terms of motivations of the owner-government and the agent-manager. This paper addresses this question. Public ownership is not a homogeneous concept and the agent manager's discretion, which largely determines the strategic behaviour of the organization is conditioned by the type of demands …

Mapping The Discipline Of The Olympic Games: An Author Cocitation Analysis, Peter Warning, Rosie Ching, Kristine Toohey Apr 2001

Mapping The Discipline Of The Olympic Games: An Author Cocitation Analysis, Peter Warning, Rosie Ching, Kristine Toohey

Research Collection School Of Economics

The authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the …

Correlates Of Life Satisfaction After Retirement, Richard A. Tackett Apr 2001

Correlates Of Life Satisfaction After Retirement, Richard A. Tackett

Dissertations

Much of the literature on aging, retirement, and stages of life has focused on men. The changing role from productive members of society to that of being retired can be either viewed as an opportunity to experience new adventures or depressing for those who are unable to move successfully into the next developmental stage of life. This study examined factors that could contribute to life satisfaction in 144 individuals who were over 65 years of age. The factors that were included in this examination are self-esteem, morale, depression, and demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender, ethnicity, educational level, marital status, income, …

From Difference To Dominance To Domesticity: Care As Work, Gender As Tradition, Joan Williams Apr 2001

From Difference To Dominance To Domesticity: Care As Work, Gender As Tradition, Joan Williams

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Article introduces the notion of gender not as difference or as dominance, but as tradition. The work of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler are tapped for insights into the cultural system that defines the relationship of market work to family work; the term "domesticity" is used to describe that system. Domesticity is presented as an important, if partial, model that offers crucial insights into the work/family axis of gender—and into the strengths and limitations of conceptualizing work/family issues in terms of "care." This Article argues that "care" is work, and distinguishes seven distinct types of care work.

Taking Care, Katherine M. Franke Apr 2001

Taking Care, Katherine M. Franke

Chicago-Kent Law Review

In this Commentary, Franke seeks to historically contextualize the Symposium contributions of Fineman and Williams. Given that both Fineman and Williams urge a larger role for the state, the market, and private employers in addressing the demands of human dependency, Franke turns to the experiences of African Americans in the immediate post-Civil War period to illuminate the precedent for externalizing the costs of dependency outside the family, as well as the complexities of so doing. The experiences of African Americans during this time instruct that public support brings with it a set of disciplinary norms that render that support a …

Perceived Drinking Norms, Attention To Social Comparison Information, And Alcohol Use Among College Students, Katherine B. Novak, Lizabeth A. Crawford

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Numerous studies indicate that normative campus drinking practices are important in determining college undergraduates’ use and abuse of alcohol. The purpose of this paper was to extend this literature by assessing the extent to which a dispositional susceptibility to peer influence, measured using the Attention to Social Comparison Information subscale (Lennox & Wolfe, 1984), moderates this relationships. Consistent with prior research, the perception that alcohol use and abuse are common campus activities was associated with high levels of drinking across students. Attention to social comparison information also had a direct positive effect on alcohol consumption among the undergraduates surveyed. Moreover, …
