Mexican-American Women In The United States: Acculturation Experiences, Language And Self-Identity, Diana Hammer '01
Mexican-American Women In The United States: Acculturation Experiences, Language And Self-Identity, Diana Hammer '01
Honors Projects
As a society composed of multiple ethnic groups, the United States is a place where the processes of acculturation and assimilation are never-ending. Today, large numbers of Mexicans, in particular, are immigrating to the U.S. According to Gordon's assimilation model (1964), Anglo-American and Mexican-American ethnic groups will one day be indistinguishable. At the individual level, Gordon believes this process begins with acculturation as members of each group adjust to the differing customs of the other. Park (1928) and Stonequist (1935, 1937) agree that finding a compromise can be especially difficult for "marginal" individuals who have identities in both cultures. From …

Conceptualizing The Process Of Education Reform From An International Perspective, Benjamin Levin
Conceptualizing The Process Of Education Reform From An International Perspective, Benjamin Levin
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
A great deal of comparative work on education reform is now being done, but this work often lacks a clearly articulated conceptual frame. This paper, based on a study of change in five jurisdictions in four countries, develops a model of reform based on four interactive elements - origins, adoption, implementation, and outcomes. Within each of these elements, questions and concepts from the relevant literature are developed with the intent of building a more comprehensive approach to the analysis of reform from political, organizational and educational perspectives.

Increasing Attendance At Voluntary Academic Tutoring Sessions On A Large University, Meghan Sadler
Increasing Attendance At Voluntary Academic Tutoring Sessions On A Large University, Meghan Sadler
Honors Theses
High attrition rates have become an impetus for colleges and universities to develop programs to help students during the first years of their education. Various services such as supplemental instruction, tutoring, testing, counseling, college success seminars, and remedial help are offered to help students be successful in their university studies. While these services may be offered, encouraging students to voluntarily attend these sessions is a problem. This study was conducted to analyze the effect of prompts on improving the attendance at voluntary content tutoring sessions at a large Midwestern University. The participants were college students enrolled in any course that …
