A Communicative Journey From Dysfunctional-To-Functional In A Therapeutic Community For Substance Abuse, Victoria Jean Cramer
A Communicative Journey From Dysfunctional-To-Functional In A Therapeutic Community For Substance Abuse, Victoria Jean Cramer
Communication
The research question for this study explores change in the lived experience of the substance abuser whose life is moving from dysfunctional-to-functional and investigates how communication grounds this change in human interaction. Communication appears in experience as one changes from addictive substance dysfunctionality to a balanced functionality. The communicative processes, in the setting of a therapeutic community, are constructive to such transitions. The methodology for answering this question of how suggests addressing the lived experience of transition. Narrative analysis of the eight open-ended interviews produced three emergent themes. Those emergent themes are (1) isolation, (2) self-disclosure, and (3) connectedness. The …

Sense Of Humor, Stress, And Burnout In Medical Social Workers, Kerby Plante
Theses and Graduate Projects
This quantitative study used survey research methodology to explore the relationship befween sense of humor, stress, and burnout in medical social workers. The hypothesis of this study is that a sense of humor will decrease stress, which in turn will descrease burnout for social workers. The study used the Sense of Humor Rating Scale, the Job Stress Survey, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory as the measures to quantify the variables. The study found that stress is …

Online Game Communities Are Social In Nature., Cindy Ahuna
Online Game Communities Are Social In Nature., Cindy Ahuna
SWITCH
In this article, the author discusses about how can an online game form a community as essential as real life and how the community of online gaming has developed through their own platform. The author refers to artist/curator Anne-Marie Schleiner, as he describes social developments in gaming. Sometimes, the social bonds developed in these groups extend beyond the game into friendship. Players will offer each other moral support through personal hardship and help each other find jobs. Although similar to the real life, however, when communities form through an online game platform, a semantic world of sharing knowledge, solving problems, …
Shame, Grace, And Spirituality: A Comparison Of Measures, Jill D. Spradlin
Shame, Grace, And Spirituality: A Comparison Of Measures, Jill D. Spradlin
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Shame is a widely studied aspect of human experience; grace, perhaps its counterpart, has so far largely been overlooked. The relationships among shame, grace, and spiritual well-being were explored. A sample of 115 college-aged participants completed the Internalized Shame (Cook, 1987), Grace (Payton, Spradlin, & Bufford, 2000) and Spiritual Well-Being (Ellison, 1983) scales. It was hypothesized that shame would be negatively correlated with grace and spiritual well-being, and that spiritual well-being and grace would be moderately positively correlated.
The Grace Scale had adequate internal consistency and expected correlations with demographic items. There was no effect for gender on the Grace …

An Analysis Of Sex Trafficking In The Asian Region In An Era Of Globalization, Corie J. Hammers
An Analysis Of Sex Trafficking In The Asian Region In An Era Of Globalization, Corie J. Hammers
Dissertations and Theses
Globalization, spurred on by capitalist principles, seeks the integration of countries and their economies into a single global market. Global integration has impacted countries in many ways, often negatively. Phenomena such as the illicit trade in weapons, drugs, and people for their sexual and/or physical labor, have also been facilitated by globalization. Specifically examined in this study were a) patterns of sex trafficking of women and girls in four countries: India, Nepal, the Philippines, and Thailand, and b) the various ways globalization has both impacted women's status within these countries and facilitated the sex trade.
One manifestation of globalization has …
