Sex Role Identity And Relationship Factors As Correlates Of Abusive Behavior In Lesbian Relationships, Grace A. Telesco
Sex Role Identity And Relationship Factors As Correlates Of Abusive Behavior In Lesbian Relationships, Grace A. Telesco
CAHSS Faculty Theses and Dissertations
The recognition of partner abuse between lesbian intimates has gained attention in the literature only within the last few decades. The current research indicates that physical and psychological abuse is occurring between lesbian partners at about the same rate as their heterosexual counterparts. The theoretical explanations for lesbian partner abuse share similarities with the heterosexual paradigm. However, significant differences in gender make-up and the patriarchal issues of power and control do not fit within the lesbian framework and the unique issues of attachment in lesbian relationships and the issue of homophobia are cause for another perspective.

Use And Implications Of Bovinesomatotropin For The Wisconsin Dairy Sector In The 1990s, B. Barham, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, S. Moon
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Seven years have passed since the U.S. government approved the commercial use of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST), a synthetic relative of a naturally-occurring growth hormone that stimulates milk production in cows. Prior to approval, national controversy over rBST, more popularly known as BGH (bovine growth hormone), raged for almost a decade (Barham, 1996). Opponents and proponents alike envisioned rBST as a juggernaut technology, one that would change the dairy industry in dramatic ways, first and foremost by substantially raising herd productivity and overall milk production and then perhaps by driving away consumers from dairy products. With these concerns in mind, …
Smart Growth And Wisconsin Agriculture, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Smart Growth And Wisconsin Agriculture, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Relatively low and volatile agricultural commodity prices have placed increasing pressure on the state’s farm sector in the 1990s. At the same time, an unusually robust non-farm economy has generated significant demand for rural housing and recreational land development. The result has been a dramatic acceleration in the rate of farmland conversion to non- farm uses over the last 15 years. Non-farm growth pressures have affected many other aspects of Wisconsin’s urban and rural landscape as well. To help communities grapple with these new challenges, the state legislature passed a new “Smart Growth” law in the fall of 1999 (1999 …

Child Emotional Maltreatment: A 2-Year Study Of Us Army Cases, Linda K. Jellen, James E. Mccarroll, Laurie E. Thayer
Child Emotional Maltreatment: A 2-Year Study Of Us Army Cases, Linda K. Jellen, James E. Mccarroll, Laurie E. Thayer
United States Army: Publications
Objective: Reports of childhood emotional maltreatment have increased greatly over the past decade. The objective of this research was to determine the types of emotional maltreatment substantiated in a community of US Army families residing temporarily in Germany. Such a description may help to improve the understanding of how a jurisdictional body defines emotional maltreatment in day-to-day practice.
Method: Data were obtained from a review of the minutes of case review committees (CRCs) for 181 cases of child emotional abuse in 1997–1998. We determined the type, number, and severity of incidents, the substantiation rate, and the situations to which children …

Graduate Record 2001: Centennial Edition, Southwestern Oklahoma State University
SWOSU Yearbooks
It was called Southwestern Normal School. Its yearbook was The Oracle. The year was 1901. Oklahoma wasn't even a state when Weatherford started up the small teacher's school. There was no campus. Instead, the town borrowed office space from a beer company. Finally, a building was set up on a hill north of town. In a grand ceremony one morning, the students, faculty and staff marched from downtown Weatherford to their new home.
On a chilly, rainy March 8, 2001, Southwestern re-created the scene, ending with a campus-wide picture. The event was a 100 years in the making, just as …

The Incidence And Diversion Of People With Mental Illness In The Kent County Correctional Facility, Marleah Bevelacqua
The Incidence And Diversion Of People With Mental Illness In The Kent County Correctional Facility, Marleah Bevelacqua
Masters Theses
Many individuals with mental illness are arrested specifically due to symptoms of their mental illness for charges such as trespassing or disorderly conduct. This study involves several facets of determining an appropriate diversion program for Kent County Correctional Facility to place people in community based treatment programs rather than jail. The quantitative portion of the study was to replicate an earlier study performed in 1994 to determine an accurate number of persons with mental illness incarcerated in the facility. The remainder of the study was more qualitative in nature, studying jail diversion programs in other areas to determine similarities and …
Mainstream Legal Responses To Domestic Violence Versus Real Needs Of Diverse Communities, Elizabeth Murno, Jessica F. Vasquez
Mainstream Legal Responses To Domestic Violence Versus Real Needs Of Diverse Communities, Elizabeth Murno, Jessica F. Vasquez
Fordham Urban Law Journal
Keynote speaker Marcia Ann Gillespie, editor-in-chief of Ms. Magazine, discussed the importance of getting to the root of what makes violence against women. She stressed the importance of looking at what makes men act violent, taking down barriers of reporting violence, and analyzing other contributing factors. Panelist Aurora Salamone from the New York City Department for the Aging then discussed domestic abuse against elders, stressing that domestic violence in the household does not all the sudden stop at a certain age. Panelist Kimberly A. Madden from from the Jewish Association for Services of the Aged discussed how violence against elders …

Promise, Peril, And Potential: Developing, Implementing, And Assessing Problem-Based Learning At The Undergraduate Level, Carol F. Whitfield
Innovations in Undergraduate Research and Honors Education: Proceedings of the Second Schreyer National Conference 2001
In an effort to cope with the vastly expanding body of knowledge in medicine, medical educators in the last 20 years began to realize that not all the facts one needed to know to practice could be 'taught' in four years of medical school. Furthermore, recall of material learned during the 'chock-full-of-facts' early years was discouragingly poor, and learned information went out of date very quickly. Educators came to the realization that producing students who were life-long self-learners was a reasonable solution. Even earlier, a few schools such as McMaster University in Canada began using problem based learning (PBL) in …

Evaluating The Engagement Process Of Involuntary Male Clients In A Court-Ordered Domestic Abuse Program, Colleen Cunningham
Evaluating The Engagement Process Of Involuntary Male Clients In A Court-Ordered Domestic Abuse Program, Colleen Cunningham
Theses and Graduate Projects
The purpose of this quantitative study is to investigate the level of resistance in involuntary clients participating in a domestic abuse treatment program. Using a time-series design, the study explores at which point in treatment, if at all, these clients become engaged in the treatment process. Twenty-one men attending a domestic violence program participated in the study. Survey questionnaires were administered to study participants at weeks one, three, and five of the treatment program. The survey focused on the level of resistance to treatment each man displayed. In addition, the survey explored the level of accountability program participants exhibited for …
