A Case Study Of The 8 March 1999 Freezing Rain Event For North Platte, Nebraska, Shari Mutchler Dec 2001

A Case Study Of The 8 March 1999 Freezing Rain Event For North Platte, Nebraska, Shari Mutchler

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

During the morning hours of 8 March 1999, freezing precipitation fell over portions of western Nebraska, including the communities of McCook, North Platte and Valentine between midnight and 10:00 A.M. CST. The freezing precipitation resulted in dangerous travel conditions, causing several automobile accidents, along with the delay and temporary closing of area public schools 8 March 1999. The freezing rain changed over to snow later the same morning.
A forecast for snow, rather than freezing precipitation, was issued by the local forecast office. The forecast issued was based predominately on numerical weather prediction guidance, and the observed temperature profile of …

Septum Formation In Aspergillus Nidulans, Steven D. Harris Dec 2001

Septum Formation In Aspergillus Nidulans, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Filamentous fungi form multicellular hyphae that are partitioned by septa. In A. nidulans, septum formation requires the assembly of a septal band following the completion of mitosis. Recent observations show that this band is a dynamic structure composed of actin, a septin and a formin. In addition, assembly is dependent upon a conserved protein kinase cascade that regulates mitotic exit and septation in yeast. Hyphal differentiation may reflect the regulation of this cascade by cyclin-dependent kinase activity. In this review, the dynamics and regulation underlying the assembly of the septal band are discussed.

Expenditure Control And Traditional Budgets: Comparing Two Implementations, Angela Lauria Gunnink Dec 2001

Expenditure Control And Traditional Budgets: Comparing Two Implementations, Angela Lauria Gunnink

Masters Theses

My research will entail examining the budget processes of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Fairfield, California. The difference between these two cities and their budgets is that Fairfield implemented an expenditure control budget, and Kalamazoo operates with a traditional budget. The purpose of this Master’s Thesis is to compare and contrast Fairfield's performance with their expenditure control budget to Kalamazoo, a city of approximately the same size in terms of population, square mileage, and local governance as Fairfield, but operates with a traditional city budget.

This study revisits the empirical claims made by Osborne and Gaebler (1992), which illustrates Fairfield, California as …

A Decentralized, Patient-Centered Approach To Diabetes Disease Management In The Primary Care Setting, Michael Toscani, John P. O'Connor, David B. Nash Dec 2001

A Decentralized, Patient-Centered Approach To Diabetes Disease Management In The Primary Care Setting, Michael Toscani, John P. O'Connor, David B. Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Although many disease management programs have been developed for diabetes, no single design has proved best for all providers and patient populations. Cost effectiveness is especially relevant to diabetes programs because significant costs of the disease may come from complications that occur later in life, while the costs of the program are incurred immediately. For this reason, diabetes disease management programs with positive outcomes and low implementation costs are of particular importance. We report here on the outcomes of a pilot test of the Steps to Health program developed by Abbott Laboratories. The Steps to Health program was designed to …

Multimodal Assessment Of The Effect Of Chewing Gum On Nicotine Withdrawal, Lee M. Cohen, Dana M. Britt, Frank L. Collins, Mustafa Al-Absi, Dennis E. Mcchargue Dec 2001

Multimodal Assessment Of The Effect Of Chewing Gum On Nicotine Withdrawal, Lee M. Cohen, Dana M. Britt, Frank L. Collins, Mustafa Al-Absi, Dennis E. Mcchargue

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The present study was designed to evaluate the usefulness of chewing gum to reduce nicotine withdrawal, craving, and salivary cortisol concentrations during temporary nicotine deprivation. A total of 20 male smokers were studied under conditions when gum was and was not accessible during a 4-hour deprivation period. All subjects smoked an initial cigarette shortly after arrival for the two experimental sessions and were informed that they would be unable to smoke for the remainder of each session. The sessions consisted of each subject watching a movie, then waiting in the lab for two consecutive 30-min intervals. Self-reported nicotine withdrawal and …

The Poverty Of Hard Work: Multiple Jobs And Low Wages In Family Economies Of Rural Utah Households, Christina E. Gringeri Dec 2001

The Poverty Of Hard Work: Multiple Jobs And Low Wages In Family Economies Of Rural Utah Households, Christina E. Gringeri

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The combination of paid work and poverty, or near poverty, is a growing problem in the United States, one of which is often accentuated by residence in rural, low-wage communities where underemployment is more prevalent than in metropolitan areas. This paper examines the experiences of sixty rural families with inadequate employment using data from ethnographic interviews with a particular focus on the strategies they use to meet their family's needs in spite of low-wage work.

Connecting Personal Biography And Social History: Women Casino Workers And The Global Economy, Jill B. Jones, Susan Chandler Dec 2001

Connecting Personal Biography And Social History: Women Casino Workers And The Global Economy, Jill B. Jones, Susan Chandler

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Economic globalization has been described as the "most fundamental redesign of the planet's political and economic arrangements since as least the industrial revolution" (Mander, 1996). This article explores its implications in the lives of a group of women casino workers. Based on a qualitative study in which data were collected from key informants, focus groups of community leaders and professionals, and in-depth interviews with women casino workers themselves, the study attempts, in the spirit of C. Wright Mills (1959) and social work's tradition of person-in-environment, to connect "the patterns of [individual] lives and the course of world history."

Inside The Black Box: Comment On Diamond And Vidmar, Valerie P. Hans

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

It is an honor to be invited to comment on the first publication of the Arizona Jury Project, a study of Arizona juries that includes videotaping and analysis of jury room discussions and deliberations. It is a remarkable and unique project, made possible by an unusual confluence of people, places, and events. In an insightful opinion some years ago, United States Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis observed that "[i]t is one of the happy incidents of the federal system that a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments …

The Valuation Effects Of Initiations And Terminations Of Joint Ventures, Tomas Mantecon Prieto Dec 2001

The Valuation Effects Of Initiations And Terminations Of Joint Ventures, Tomas Mantecon Prieto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation examines the valuation effects of initiations and terminations of joint ventures formed by two partners.

The evidence indicates that there is an increase in value for both partners at joint venture initiations and that these gains are greater for small partners than for the large partners. The pattern of the gains to partners is consistent with the certification value of the inter-corporate relationship intrinsic to a joint venture. Moreover, an analysis of the operating performance after the initiation of joint ventures indicates that there is no significant improvement in operating performance of the partner firms relative to benchmark …
