Jury Trials And First Amendment Values In "Cyber World", John E. Nowak Jan 2001

Jury Trials And First Amendment Values In "Cyber World", John E. Nowak

University of Richmond Law Review

In the past half-century, I suspect, enough trees to constitute a small forest have been turned into paper simply for discussion of free speech and fair trial issues. I doubt that there is little new to say about how legislatures or courts should be dealing with the subject at the moment. The Supreme Court has been able to work out a series of positions that are at least "good enough for govermnent work" concerning subjects such as attorney speech regulations, closure of trials, courthouse picketing, and protective orders related to the discovery process.

Family Development Deductions - An Alternative To Repealing The Estate Tax, Richard J. Kovach Jan 2001

Family Development Deductions - An Alternative To Repealing The Estate Tax, Richard J. Kovach

University of Richmond Law Review

Opposing political and social interests have long conducted a vigorous debate on whether gratuitous transfers of wealth should invoke federal excise taxes. Attempts to eliminate wealth transfer taxes reached a peak in the summer of 2000, when the Senate passed repeal legislation overwhelmingly approved by the House of Representatives. Those supporting repeal point out that wealth transfer taxation discourages work and savings while encouraging consumption. They further assert that transfer taxation revenue does not constitute a very significant portion of total federal revenue. The supporters of repeal also emphasize how the complexity of these taxes has created a parasitic service …

Runoff Modeling Of The Saugatucket River: An Application Of Hec-Hms Software, Quoc An Nguyen Jan 2001

Runoff Modeling Of The Saugatucket River: An Application Of Hec-Hms Software, Quoc An Nguyen

Open Access Master's Theses

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had revised its HEC-1 software. The new version is HEC-HMS (Hydrological Modeling System). This versatile software retains all computational and analysis capabilities of the old version with additional features, which includes CAD (Computer Aided Design) like modeling techniques (icon and dialogue box driven). The main objective of this project is to model flow response from a rainfall event in the Saugatucket River. Through model selection process, HEC-HMS was selected as the appropriate software for implementation.

The modeling technique used here is different from standard professional practice in the model calibration and validation. This project …

A Facile And Efficient Method For The Rearrangement Of Aryl-Substituted Epoxides To Aldehydes And Ketones Using Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Kaushik Bhatia, Kyle Eash, Nicholas Leonard, Matthew Oswald Jan 2001

A Facile And Efficient Method For The Rearrangement Of Aryl-Substituted Epoxides To Aldehydes And Ketones Using Bismuth Triflate, Ram Mohan, Kaushik Bhatia, Kyle Eash, Nicholas Leonard, Matthew Oswald

Scholarship

Aryl-substituted epoxides undergo smooth rearrangement in the presence of 0.01–0.1 mol% Bi(OTf)3•xH2O. The rearrangement is regioselective with aryl-substituted epoxides, and products arise from cleavage of the benzylic C―O bond. The highly catalytic nature of this method coupled with the fact that the reagent is relatively non-toxic, easy to handle and inexpensive make it an attractive alternative to more corrosive and toxic Lewis acids, such as BF3•Et2O, currently used to effect epoxide rearrangements.

The Discovery-Oriented Approach To Organic Chemistry. 5. Stereochemistry Of E2 Elimination: Elimination Of Cis- And Trans-2-Methylcyclohexyl Tosylate, Ram Mohan, Marcus Cabay, Brad Ettlie, Adam Tuite, Kurt Welday Jan 2001

The Discovery-Oriented Approach To Organic Chemistry. 5. Stereochemistry Of E2 Elimination: Elimination Of Cis- And Trans-2-Methylcyclohexyl Tosylate, Ram Mohan, Marcus Cabay, Brad Ettlie, Adam Tuite, Kurt Welday

Scholarship

The E2 elimination is one of the most important reactions in organic chemistry and is discussed in considerable detail in a sophomore organic course. We have developed a discovery-oriented lab that illustrates the stereochemistry of the E2 elimination reaction and is a good exercise in 1H NMR spectroscopy. The added element of discovery insures that student interest and enthusiasm are retained.

Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth(Iii) Nitrate Pentahydrate, Ram Mohan, Bryce Nattier, Kyle Eash Jan 2001

Deprotection Of Ketoximes Using Bismuth(Iii) Nitrate Pentahydrate, Ram Mohan, Bryce Nattier, Kyle Eash

Scholarship

Ketoximes undergo facile deprotection in acetone-H20 (9: 1) in the presence 01' 0.5 equivalents of Bi(N03h•5H20. Bismuth(III) nitrate is relatively non-toxic, insensitive to air and inexpensive. These features coupled with the use of a relatively nontoxic solvent system make this method an attractive alternative to existing routes for deprotection of ketoximes.

Development Of Human And Physical Capital And Change In The Structure Of Exports In Developing Countries: An Analytical Study, Pritam Banjeree '01 Jan 2001

Development Of Human And Physical Capital And Change In The Structure Of Exports In Developing Countries: An Analytical Study, Pritam Banjeree '01

Honors Projects

The objective of this paper is to look at how development of physical and human capital affects the structure of exports from developing countries. As a country becomes increasingly developed, it moves away from production in primary goods to production of manufactures. This structural change will also be reflected in its exports. The more developed a country is in terms of human and physical capital the higher will be its manufacturing exports. This hypothesis is tested empirically. Factors like education, per capita income, infrastructure and capital investment are used to capture human and physical capital development, while the percentage of …

A Case Of The Phillips Curve In The Formation Of A Monetary Union, Yuet Wen Wan '01 Jan 2001

A Case Of The Phillips Curve In The Formation Of A Monetary Union, Yuet Wen Wan '01

Honors Projects

The European Monetary Union was established in 1992 as part of an effort to bring economic integration to new levels by creating a common currency area for Europe -a monetary union that would abolish transaction costs of converting one European currency to another, and eliminating exchange rate variability and uncertainty among traders and investors. Since the formation of the European Monetary System in 1979, lowering inflation had become the main monetary policy priority. My research centers on the Phillips Curve, which implies that decreasing inflation rates would always be coupled with increasing unemployment rates. This study uses the trends of …

Free Speech For Judges: A Commentary On Lubet Et Al. V. Posner, Monroe H. Freedman Jan 2001

Free Speech For Judges: A Commentary On Lubet Et Al. V. Posner, Monroe H. Freedman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Criticism of unethical judicial conduct has been leveled against Richard Posner, the widely respected former chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The critics are two widely respected legal scholars, Professors Steven Lubet and Ronald Dworkin. Judge Posner, in turn, has vigorously defended himself. Given the intellectual stature of the antagonists, it is not surprising that both sides are right. In my view, however, Judge Posner is more right.
